The deadline for first entries for the R1,5 million SplashOut Gr1 Cape Derby to be run on Saturday 22 February has been extended 24 hours after only seven entries were received for the prestigious classic on Monday morning.

The decision to extend will no doubt give connections of marginal contenders time to reconsider participation. In the past three years, fields of 11,10 and 9 have been fielded in the final Grade 1 of the Cape Summer season.

Dean Kannemeyer’s Gimme A Prince heads a sixteen strong entry for the R600 000 Khaya Stables Gr2 Diadem Stakes. The Cape Flying Championship winner bounced back with vengeance over the 1000m last time following a cracking third-placed effort in the L’Ormarins King’s Plate, and he is bound to start a hot order over the extra 200m.
