A Shaw Thing – Back By Popular Demand!

New season hosted by Rouvaun Smit

By popular demand, the ‘A Shaw Thing’ podcast returns with the launch of the 2024/25 Cape Racing Summer Festival Of Racing on Saturday.

South Africa’s most popular snap racemeeting preview podcast, powered by Hollywoodbets, was launched in December 2021 and was hosted by the late Shaheen Shaw who made the show his own with his unique insights and down-to-earth punter-centric quips.

‘Sunshine’, as many of us knew him, was a champion of racing fans of all disciplines and his sudden passing on 23 October 2024 rocked the industry.

In the spirit of ‘hitting them hard’, and ensuring that the sun shines bright and the show goes on, Shaheen’s best friend and colleague Rouvaun Smit will take the controls from Saturday’s local double-header

“I miss my friend and I am hoping to keep the sun shining. It’s my way of keeping Shaheen’s legacy alive and I was honoured when I was offered the opportunity by Hollywoodbets to continue with the podcast. I recall Shaheen always said that he’d get me on the show – I really never ever thought that it would be under the present circumstances. But I know he’s smiling down on us and shouting our bankers home,” added Rouvaun, who is battling his own challenges since an accident in February 2023 left him wheelchair-bound.

Cape Racing’s ‘Golden Voice’ suffered a fracture of his spine in a fall at his home on 17 February 2023 in an event that was to alter his and his family’s life forever.

“The days are long but time has generally passed quickly and I am still busy with rehab. I miss the buzz and atmosphere of the racecourse and the wonderful people. But I have been blessed with a loving and supportive family and friendships that have kept me going. This show will mean a lot in keeping my eye in on the big season form, and in a way it’s a new lease on life for me!”
