Who Remembers Taffy Thomas?

A plea to all the 'old timers' out there

Does anybody remember a big black horse trained by a gentleman with the surname Rowe from the Transvaal days of the early 70’s?

His name was Straight Inn and he and jockey Taffy Thomas got on like a house on fire.

Keith Goddard writes in the Sporting Post Mailbag to ‘all the old timers out there’.

Could you spare a thought for Taffy Thomas, who was the only jockey who could win on Straight Inn. It must have been 6 or 7 wins plus places. If you recall red and white horizontal stripes.

Talk about a Christmas jockey?  Invariably  won at long odds and the only time punters never got upset but rather cheered him on at the winning enclosure was when he won on Straight Inn!

Would have been around 1975 in what would have been James Maree, Gerald Turner, Raymond Rhodes and Michael Cave era.

If one was on racecourse when Taffy won everyone was happy for him. I feel it will make for interesting comments.

Taffy you biscuit! The good old days.

Does anybody remember and can add value by way of a photo or facts?

Ed – According to ARO,Straight Inn was born in 1964. Was by Straight Play out of a mare called Grays Inn.  Earned R8021 winning 7 times with 24 places from 75 starts.
