Halfway through World Pool Gold Cup Day, South Africa’s Champion Sire of 2020-2021, Gimmethegreenlight had three feature winners under his belt and well on his way to being crowned champion once again! His son Sandringham Summit stamped his claims to an Equus title with a terrific victory in the R700 000 World Pool Moment Of The Day Gr1 Champion Stakes to give trainer David Niewenhuizen his first Grade 1 success.
With the anticipated duel between the two undefeated Gauteng raiders Lucky Lad and Main Defender expected to dominate the end of season Gr1 clash, it was recent Durban Gr2 Golden Horseshoe winner Sandringham Summit (7-1) who stepped up and produced a scintillating performance from the worst of the draw.
Enjoying an attacking ride by Craig Zackey, the ever prominent Main Defender (9-4) swept into the lead early in the run for home and the son of Pathfork looked to have plenty of juice in the tank at the 250m as Main Defender threatened wide out.
But when it counted there was only one horse in it as the Ravesh Singh-raced Sandringham Summit asserted his authority to win by 2,40 lengths in a time of 96,07 secs.
Main Defender wasn’t disgraced in second, with his stablemate We Are The Logans (100-1) boosting the trifecta in third.
Nothing went right for the favourite Lucky Lad, who finished stone last.
The winner was bred by Varsfontein Stud and is by Gimmethegreenlight (More Than Ready) out of the Captain Al mare Townsend.
Sandringham Summit is a half-brother to 2018 Golden Horseshoe winner Eden Roc (VAR) who now stands at Clifton Stud.
A R1,7 million National Yearling Sale purchase, Sandringham Summit has now won 3 of his 5 starts with 2 places for stakes of R842 250.
