2007 Sibaya Yearling Sale Thursday 5 July - Friday 6 July

Impressive Stallion Line-Up At Sibaya
THE progeny of 72 stallions will come under the hammer at the Sibaya Yearling Sale on Thursday 5 and Friday 6 July at the Sibaya Casino Complex in Umhlanga Rocks.
A record total of 301 yearlings will pass through the ring at the sale, hosted by Bloodstock SA and Sibaya Casino and Entertainment Kingdom.
The bloodstock on offer covers an impressive line-up of sires from log leaders like Jallad, Fort Wood, National Emblem and Rich Man’s Gold to up-and-coming Kahal and Silvano to promising freshman stallions Mogok and Strike Smartly.
A total of 180 lots will be sold on Day One, starting at 11am.
The first lot to attract serious attention is likely to be Perfect Story (lot 9), a daughter of champion sire Jallad and the first produce of the Rocky Marriage mare Jonikal. She hails from the family of Cyber Press, Fast Break and Tarn Fairy, with a mixture of speed and stamina prominent in her pedigree.
Count Du Bois’ sole representative is Lot 16, Miss Du Bois, from the National Assembly mare Kissational. Her second dam produced current top middle distance handicapper Alpe D’Heuz and the produce of her third dam is packed with speedy class featuring the likes of Leopard Strike and National Title.
The pedigree of Lot 27, a Caesour filly from Daytona Stud, goes back to Sports Chestnut (3rd dam) and Horse Chestnut (4th dam).
Summerhill’s sire Muhtafal has risen to prominence in recent seasons and his son Mr Mickey Mouse (Lot 61), hails from a prolific winner producing family, stretching from his 4th dam City Hall (Ocean City) to his 3rd dam (Record Edge) to his 2nd dam (Warning Zone).
Two foals by the recently deceased Rakeen will be presented to bidders and given that they will soon be hard to come by, the bidding will be spirited. His filly Oh So Keen (Lot 78), from Avalon Stud, is the first foal of five-time winner Popular Soul and Backworth Stud’s Return Of The King (Lot 40) comes from an international family of multiple winning performers.
South Pacific (lot 153), by prominent first-season sire Mogok, is sure to attract plenty of interest. She is the first produce of six-time winning mare Sylvan Story, from a pedigree laden with speed.
Former champion filly Tetre Rouge’s first foal from top stallion National Emblem is a chestnut colt named Topspin. He is Lot 155 and prospective buyers will be having a close look.
Goldkeeper sired Top Choice (Lot 156), the first foal of former leading filly The Pick, from the prominent Zimbabwean family of Bold Bidder and On Option.
A half-sister to Durban July runner Badger’s Gift will get to the sales ring in the latter part of Day One. She is lot 164, Clematis, a bay filly by Silvano from Upwardly Mobile.
Fort Wood’s half-brother Martinelli is regarded as a stallion on the verge of a breakthrough and his son Young Nellie (Lot 175) looks a good prospect. He is from the family of Fair Model, Young Warrior and Young Sensation.
A filly by Rambo Dancer from a full-sister to sire What a Prospect will open the bidding on Day Two. She is Lot 181, Andaman Dancer, raised by Spring Valley Stud.
Shortly after that Jarra Wood will walk into the ring. He is by Fort Wood and the first foal of smart Graded performer Azabu Park.
Lot 204 is a colt by London News, the second foal of Invitation Only, whose first produce Belle Of Choice was one of the leading fillies in Port Elizabeth last season.
Gold Dagger (Lot 254) hails from the prominent staying family of Totally Bold, Classic Hero and Buckarina, with Graded winner Your Eminence in the 2nd dam. He is by highly promising sire Kahal.
Boland Stud’s Golden Passion (Lot 258) is by Goldmark from Erin’s Chant. He is a half brother to well performed Sudden Storm.
Doowaley, by sire of sires Sadlers Wells, will be represented by Doo Bee Doo (Lot 264), who comes from the family of speed merchant and sire Divine Act.
Buyers are certain to stay to the end of Day Two when another Goldkeeper colt, Styx (Lot 297) will be knocked down to a lucky one among them. He is the second foal of the Sportsworld mare, Hockey Corner, and from the immediate family of Champion three-year-old and July runner, Jay Peg.
The first crop of Golden Acres’ new stallion Modus Vivendi will come under scrutiny. He is by Count Du Bois’ sire Zafonic and from a female line that has already produced 12 sires of Group 1 winners.
Pedigree expert Alan Laidlaw said he was suitably impressed by the Sibaya Catalogue and noted that several bargain buys will come along as the Sale progresses. “There is an excellent spread of stallions and foals from several good families,’’ he said.
The second component of the Sibaya Sales, an auction of 165 mares and fillies for stud, 41 weanlings and 54 horses in training, will take place on Tuesday, 10 July.

Bringing thoroughbreds to the casino - how good can it get?

Natal yearling sale graduate Sportscuddle kept the flag flying with a win in the Gr2 Gerald Rosenberg Stakes, her third Graded career win. Bred on the successful cross of Sportsworld with Elliodor mares, she was bought for a modest R42.000 and has earned R640.000 to date.
Then again, the Natal Sale has always been the place to hunt for value.

Seventy sires are represented with offspring at the Sibaya Yearling Sale, held for the second consecutive year at the casino complex by that name. It's the norm nowadays for yearling sales to have a sponsor, and for its graduates to be able to compete for bonus prize money. In the case of the Sibaya sale, there's R250.000 for any yearling sold this year who manages to win the Thekwini Fillies S or Premier's Championship. Both races are for 2yo's and are run in July 2008. Several exciting new young sires have their first crop yearlings at the sale, and Cape studfarms are again well represented, notably with sires-of-the-moment Silvano and Rich Man's Gold. Seven time winner (32) Lovely Bird (Bog Trotter: 2r) comes from a useful female line, whose members look well suited to the elements from Alami's sire Danzig. Her colt is a first foal.
(21) Lady Shamrock (Crystal De Roche: 2r) has a similar female line make-up as Lovely Bird, and Alami's sire Danzig might appreciated that equally well. On offer is a half sister to 2 winners.

The Breeder's Handbook suggest mares with Mr Prospector and/or Roberto as suitable for Bezin's pedigree make-up. That's bulls-eye for the colt out of (25) Leah Love (Al Mufti), whose only previous foal to race is a winner. The mare comes from the potent Lily-family.
Another with the right connections is the colt out of winning mare (210) Celtic Bunny (Centenary). The grandam of Bezrin and the mare's sire Centenary resemble each other closley, making for a 3x2 cross. The mare is a half sister to 7 winners (2 with black type).
Three-time winner (87) Pure Crystal (Crystal De Roche) has a well constructed pedigree, and is half sister to two dams of stakes winners. Her colt is a half brother to 3 winners from different sires.
