GrandWest Mare Sale 2008

21 May Wednesday at 11am
GrandWest Casino, Cape Town

The performance of the middle market at the National Yearling sale may have been disappointing for those who expected vast increases on last year, but seen in real terms the results at Nationals were encouraging. The top end of the market boomed, the middle market held up remarkably well following last year’s massive gains.
These are heady days for breeders who breed to sell. There certainly is money to be made. But what about those mares? In the month of May more than 400 Cape mares come under the hammer, first at Vintage, then at Grand West. As is to be expected, the overall mare quality is middle market rather than top of the heap. So is there room for all of them? Who will the buyers be?
The good news is that there are at least two major players with a brand new stallion on their books come August 2008. Those stallions need to be supported. So the players will be buying mares - 20, 30, 40?
The other side of the coin is that the GrandWest mare sale is a “no commission” sale. Which means that sellers can set airy-fairy reserve prices without fear of a penalty, and come to the sale with a ‘let see’ attitude. Just what effect that will have on the buyers’ resolve is anyone’s guess.
Amidst the uncertainty there is one certainty: if you want to buy sensibly you need to have done your homework. Buying breeding stock, unlike racing stock, is a serious decision that will cost, whichever way you look at it.
Karel Miedema takes some of the sting out of the effort of searching, looking at mares by broodmare sires, in alpha order. Be sure, there will be gems – if only we knew!

Al Mufti (Roberto)
Broodmare sire of Jay Peg (Camden Park), Divine Jury (Jallad), O Caesour (Caesour), Little Miss Magic (Jet Master), Rock Opera (Lecture), Heir Apparent (Fort Wood) - all Gr1 wnnrs.
Lightly raced winner (178) Kasbah Queen (6yo; dam by Akureyri) has an American pedigree background. She's half sister to a stakes performer by Singing Boy and to the dam of another, by Final Top. The family affinity seems to come from the bottom female line elements, and nothing to do with Al Mufti's regular association with Buckpasser. In foal to new sire Toreador (Danehill).
Two-time wnnr (204) Mayfair Set (8yo; dam by Fair Season) has an English family background. Her stakes winning relations (close up) are by Roland Gardens and Model Man, and some of her English relatives by Roan Rocket, Auction Ring, Tudor Melody. Affinities which do not point at Al Mufti's Buckpasser affinity. Sells in foal to Caesour, with a filly at foot by the same sire.
Here we go: 3-time winner (81) Al Nibari (12yo; dam by Free State), dam of Gr1 wnnr Little Miss Magic (by Jet Master) and 2 other wnnrs (incl a 4-timer by Jet Master), from a highclass female line. It seems that Al Mufti's affinity carries on through the mare. She sells in foal to new sire Tiger Dance (full bro to Giant's Causeway), whose dam's pedigree is constructed in a very similar way to Jet Master. The mare's last 2 foals who sold as yearlings were both Select Sale at Nationals, and made 350k and 600k.
2yo winner (from 4 starts) (75) Whistledownthewind (4yo; dam by Hard Up) is a half sister to 2yo Gr3 winner Time And Tide (by Baroon, a sire who is Rainbow Quest x Known Fact), to a 3-timer by London News, and also has a 1-time winning full sis. The next dam is a half sis to Grecian Gale Foveros), dam of Gr1 wnnr Malteme (Rakeen). The mare is in foal for the 1st time, to new sire Tiger Ridge, whose dam is a half sis to Al Mufti (3x3 Lassie Dear is what the foal will have).
Two-time winner, over 1800-2000m, (107) Calypso Star (6yo; dam by Lords) had a West Man colt last season, her 1st foal, but wasn't covered this year. Herself a half sis to 2 wnnrs, she comes from a decent family, which shows affinities unrelated to Al Mufti's Buckpasser.
(35) Satin Supreme (13yo; dam by Meadowville) is a Gr3 pl SW of 7 races, but hasn't yet cracked it at stud, from 4 foals by a variety of sires. There's hope still, if we come up with a strong mating. Blushing Groom could be a nice option. The mare sells in foal to Badger's Drift, whose grandam is a ¾ sister to Blushing Groom. Could that be it?
Unraced (198) Magical Miss (5yo; dam by Northern Guest) is inbred to Buckpasser. She is half sister to a winner, their dam in turn a half sis to 2 Gr1 wnnrs and to the dam of another. The mare has had 2 previous foals (both colts), the oldest by Lecture (nice mating; sold 90k at Vintage this year) and the other by Dupont. The mare sells in foal to Dynasty. Question is, why sell now, with all bases loaded?
Also inbred to Buckpasser is one-time winning (over 2400m) mare (216) Misty Moonlight (4yo; dam by Northern Guest). She comes from a family where Buckpasser may have counted (through Al Mufti, Coastal), but where other evidence (SWs by London News, Qui Danzig) points in a different direction. The 4yo sells as a filly in training.
Winning mare (85) Always Forever (11yo; dam by Russian Fox) has had 2 previous foals, the oldest a 2yo this year. The mare is a daughter of Gr1 wnnr As Ever, whose five winning offspring incl. a full sister to the mare on offer. She sells in foal to Manshood, who is also the sire of her 1st foal, and whose significant line of Storm Bird (as appears to be in Ipi Tombe's make-up) picks up Nijinsky from Russian Fox. Quite a late cover, but otherwise a premature time to sell, perhaps?

Announce (N. Assembly)
Son of N. Assembly, from the potent international female line of Danehill and Northern Dancer. The two fillies for stud offered here are from his 1st crop.
Winning miler (219) Mumbai Magic (4yo; dam by Caesour) is a daughter of lightly raced stakes pl 3-time winner Emperor’s Dance. The latter is a half sister to Gr2 sprntr War Lord, by Announce’s sire N. Assembly.
Winning miler (181) Knockout Gal (4yo; dam by Springing Leopard) is full sister to a winning colt, the pair out of SW of 5 races Stunning Kitten.

Badger Land (Codex)
This former Gr1 wnnr and SA champion sire is broodmare sire of this season’s classic Gr1 wnnrs Russian Sage (Jallad) and Captain’s Lover (Captain Al), and another Gr1 performer Rebel King (N. Emblem). His affinities are not easily deducted from these, though; more highclass offspring will be needed for that to become clearer.
Three-time winner (9) Paint The Moon (14yo; dam by Argosy) has produced two multiple winners, from Danzig stallions Joshua Dancer & N. Assembly. Her dam is a Gr1 placed sprint winner of 6 races, and dam of 8 winners. The mare sells in foal to Dynasty, a son of Fort Wood whose dam’s pedigree has much in common with the one of Badger Land’s dam.
(105) Calais (8yo; dam by Forest King) is a winning daughter of Gr2 wnnr Forest Fantasy. The latter’s 6 winning offspring incl Gr1 pl Gr3 winning sprinter Even The Wind. The mare had had two foals, both by Announce, and is in foal for the 3rd time, to new sire Jam Alley.
The first 2 foals of (166) Jeweland (7yo; dam by Golden Thatch) have been by Asaal and Restructure, and she’s in foal for the 3rd time now, to Second Empire. There’s no black type under the mare, her dam or grandam.
Eight-time wnnr (164) Jacaranda Lane (14yo; dam by Jacinto) is a half sis to 9 wnnrs incl SWs Jacaranda House (Golden Thatch) and Ginkgo (Fort Wood). The mare has produced 3 wnnrs of 14 races (a sprinter, a miler and a middle distance stayer), all by Jallad (who got Russian Sage from a Badger mare), one of them stakes placed. She’s in foal to new sire Victory Moon.
(43) Snow Bunting (14yo; dam by Soy Numero Uno) is a winning daughter of Fillies Guineas wnnr Flying Snowdrop, from a Gr1 producing American family. The mare has bred two winners to date, by Pole Position and Portrush. She sells in foal to Grey Eminence. A bit of Gone West could be interesting given the family history - perhaps next year?
Gr2 Oaks wnnr of 8 (143) Gleaming Sky (14yo; dam by Topsider) has an American pedigree. She was used as an experiment, sent abroad in foal to Fort Wood to try and make a stud career there. Her Fort Wood foal ran a few times at 2 and 3, showing little, but a half brother by Spectrum won 3 races. The mare returned to SA in foal to Medicean, that colt a foal now. Not much to conclude from a rather messed-up stud career to date, and now she'll be on the move again if sold. The covering sire is Right Approach, which could be an OK mating - depending on which way his affinities will go. Some Sadler's Wells (or Fairy King) might go well with the mare's bottom female line. She could still make someone happy.
(13) Perfect Perfume (14yo; dam by Triple Bend) is a winning half sis to champion 2yo filly Scented Royal (dam & grandam of Graded stakes horses including Set To Music, by Badger Land), their dam is US-bred Gr1 Garden Province SW Diorissimo. The mare has had 3 wnnrs to date, by Fort Wood (whose dam looks like Badger's dam), Model Man and Al Mufti. She's had placed rnnrs by Elliodor and Jallad. In a nutshell, what more could be tried? Well, we note the virtual absence of sires with Mr Prospector amongst stallions used on this family - given the make-up of the grandam Jolie Chapeau that might be an important omission. Daylami, for one, looks very interesting, as Miswaki & Jolie Chapeau are much alike in their pedigree make-up.

Barathea (Sadler's Wells)
Breeder's Cup Mile winner, broodmare sire of Italian Derby winner Awelmarduk (by Almutawakel, who is Machiavellian x Green Desert mare), French 1000 Guineas winner Tie Black (Machiavellian), Italian Gran Criterium wnnr Konigstiger (Tiger Hill, by Danehill), Irish Gr1 wnnr Necklace (Darshaan), English Gr2 wnnr Hatta Fort (Cape Cross, by Green Desert).
Unraced (97) Battalia (4yo; dam by Dancing Brave) was imported in utero, her Irish dam a maiden in France and dam of a winner in Ireland by Danehill. The bottom female line has mainly black type French & German influences. The mare is in foal for the first time, to Badger's Drift.

Bellotto (Mr Prospector)
TFR 131, at stud in Aus. Broodmare sire of Miss Danehill (Danehill) and her half bro Pentastic (Pentire by Be My Guest), Vormista (Testa Rossa by Perugino), The Right Money (Magic of Money by Last Tycoon).
Lightly raced Aus import (199) Mahanna (13yo; dam by Crown Jester) has produced 3 winners to date (her first 3 foals), incl Gr1 Allan Robertson runner-up Main Emblem (MR 91, by N. Emblem), her 1st foal. The mare's bottom female line is English, with lots of Gr1 success in Aus, using sire Planet Kingdom and probably based on Hyperion affinities. The mare is in foal to new sire Tiger Dance (full brother to Giant's Causeway).

Best By Test (Best Turn)
Broodmare sire of Champion filly Tara's Touch (Tara's Halls), and other black type wnnrs School Assembly (N. Assembly), Carry On Katie (Western Winter), Wakkarra (N. Assembly), Monsieur Dominique (Tara's Halls).
The first 3 foals of (101) Best Lark (13yo; dam by Argosy) are all wnnrs. The mare is a half sister to 5 wnnrs incl. Gr3 pl Blue Acres, with the next dam half sis to Gr1 fillies Grey Sun & Cerulean Blue. The mare is not in foal.
(211) Miss Best (15yo; dam by New South Wales) is a half sister to 10-time wnnr Victory Flight, the next dam a full sister to In Full Flight. The mare is dam of 2 wnnrs incl 8-time winner Mugutti Force, who was multiple Gr3 pl as a 2yo. She was covered by Second Empire (like Tara's Halls a son of Fairy King).
Bletchley Park (Caerleon)
Irish bred half bro to Shalford, at stud in W-Aus
Winning Australian-bred mare (76) Why Not Wendell (8yo; dam by Cheraw) is a full sister to highclass Azabu Park (Gr1 pl Gr3 wnnr in SA) and to a 3-time wnnr down under. The threesome is inbred 3x3 to genetic relatives Princess Ru and Ceasefire (both with Nasrullah & Big Game, and so leading to Shalford's sire Thatching; that's how to build further on the pedigree, too). The mare has been covered by new sire Sarge.

Captain Al (AL Mufti)
Gr1 winning young sire, without any producing daughters yet. As a sire he seems to be taking after his own sire Al Mufti, meaning Buckpasser is important.
(40) Sister-In-Law (5yo; dam by Damascus Gate) is a half sister to 4 wnnrs out of 4-time winner Sister Shirley, and full sister to another winner. This is a speedy family, going to Champion Sprinter Splendid Ann. The mare is covered by Kabool.
Once-raced (and placed) mare (77) Wild Liasion (4yo; dam by Lustra) is out of a full sister to Met-winner La Fabulous. The mare is a half sister to 2 wnnrs and sells in foal to Caesour. Note that the cross of Ceasour with the Captain's sire Al Mufti produced Gr1 wnnr O Caesour and SW Toga.

Carnegie (Sadler's Wells)
Winner of the Arc, and broodmare sire of Japanese SW Admire Hokuto (by second generation Japanese sire Sakura Bakushin O; the dam is half sister to Shalford), and Australians Ankh Morpork (Fantastic Light), Springboks (Johannesburg), Flowering Bank (by the same Japanese sire as Admire Hokuto).
NZ-bred two-time winner (68) Tsar's Star (8yo; dam by Silver Hawk) is full sister to a stakes winner of 11 races in the USA, their grandam a daughter of Mr Prospector. The mare is in foal to Victory Moon.

Casey Tibbs (Sadler's Wells)
Sire of SWs of both sexes, whose daughters are only just entering stud.

(133) Fancy Tibb's (5yo; dam by Royal Prerogative) is a winning half sister to five winners, and full sister to another. She was covered for the first time, by Deep Sleep.

Centenary (Alydar)
Broodmare sire of stakes winners Buran (Western Winter), Second Fortune (Hard Up), Words of War (Scuffleburg) and Miller Time (Almushtarak).
(5) Newsday (9yo; dam by Folmar) is a half sister to 10 wnnrs, incl SW Tub Thumper, out of stakes winning mare Prestigious. Her first foal (and only runner) to race is a 4-time winner by Joshua Dancer. She was covered by new sire Jam Alley.

Chilibang (Formidable)
English King Stand Stakes winning sprinter, who died at stud when just 10yo. Not a lot to go on, daughter-wise.
Italian SW (27) Rose Wine (13yo; dam by Final Straw) is dam of multiple wnnrs by Rakeen and Count duBois. She wasn't covered this time round.

Citidancer (Lomond)
Irish Gr3 wnnr, broodmare sire of Gr1 Hong Kong Sprint winner All Thrills Too (St Covet), Just Dancing (Fusaichi Pegasus) & half sis Tahni Girl (Redoute's Choice), Long Dollar (Rakeen), Jazzella (Black Minnaloushe).
(155) Hurricane Betsy (14yo; dam by Balkan Knight) is a winning full sis to the dam of Long Dollar. She has had 6 rnnrs to date, all multiple wnnrs, one Gr3 rnnr-up. She sells in foal to Jallad and is bound to have plenty of supporters in the ring.

Complete Warrior (Dewan)
Broodmare sire of Gr1 wnnrs Captain Al (Al Mufti) & half sis Shadow Dancing (Fort Wood), Gr1 placed Fine Hope (Fine Edge), Freedom Fortune (Freedom Land), Roman Charger (Al Mufti), and Ivory Trail (Badger's Drift). Buckpasser & consorts (la Troienne female line) appear to be of importance.
Gr3 wnnr (87) Amazon Fighter (15yo; dam by Beethoven) comes from a strong black type female line. She's the dam of 2 wnnrs, one stakes pl, by Al Mufti, who has a Buckpasser affinity. Her current weanling is also by Al Mufti. The mare sells in foal to new sire Black Minnaloushe.
(44) Some Dame (10yo; dam by Golden Thatch) is a full sister to Gr1 Cape Flying Ch'ship wnnr Nobely Born. The mare has produced two multiple winners by Becker and Casey Tibbs (from 2 rnnrs). She didn't have a foal last season, and wasn't covered subsequently.
Three-time wnnr (58) Streak To Fame (16yo; dam by Northern Drive) is out of SW Starkers (half sis to sire Goldmark). She's the dam of 3 wnnrs from different sires. Covered this time round by Captain Al, a mating which doubles up on Complete Warrior.

Cordoba (El Gran Senor)
Broodmare sire of SWs Hello Margarita (Sportsworld), Subastador (Tara's Halls), Zolaroyale (Dominion Royale), Syrian Sonja (Damascus Gate), The Assyrian and War Regalia (both Goldkeeper).

Cox's Ridge (Best Turn)
The 2008 yearling of American mare (177) Kali Ridge (14yo; dam by Mr Prospector) was a Jet Master colt who sold for R600k at the April National Sale. A nice mating that was, too. The mare has produced two 3-time winners to date by Joshua Dancer and is in foal, on a Christmas cover, to new sire Black Minnaloushe.

Cozzene (Caro)
The five winners produced to date by American mare (114) Circled (14yo; dam by Hawaii) include local stakes winner Riviersonderend and her English full sister Little Miss Gracie, who rated 100+.
