Soma’s African Adventure

Bargain buy shows he's a stayer with a future

After a day of some topsy turvy results, SA Horse Of The Year Summer Pudding and jockey Muzi Yeni rounded off the WSB Summer Cup Pick 6, in the process restoring some order to the initially runaway train exotic.

Yeni rode the last two legs of the Pick 6, including War Of Athena in the Gr2 WSB Ipi Tombe Challenge.

Veteran Turffontein trainer Joey Soma had won the Listed World Sports Betting Racing Association Handicap twice previously with Fortissima, and he made it a treble as Yeni guided the fancied African Adventure to what was the widest victory margin of the day.

Soma’s progressive longhauler African Adventure took over 300m from home and drew further and further away to beat Odd Rob (7-1) by 7,25 lengths in a time of 209,03 secs.

In a strung out field, third-placed Before Noon (33-1) was 4,75 lengths back in third.

“This must be the hardest two mile race in the country and it’s a privilege to win it again. It’s been a tough season up to now, but my owners and staff have been wonderful,” he said.

Soma said that he had rated the winner from the outset and in fact international rider Andrea Atzeni had told him a year ago that they further they go the better African Adventure would be.

“It’s taken us a year to get him to the 3200m but he showed his stamina here. I must thank Johnny Peter as the horse was up for sale and he was the only guy who believed in me.”

Bred by Mr & Mrs John  Slade, African Adventure is by Master Of My Fate (Jet Master) out of the Fort Wood mare, African Badger.

A bargain R40 000 National 2yo Sale buy, African Adventure has won 4 races with 5 places from 14 starts for stakes of R259 000.
