what a load of hog smucks... "I have seen more races lost than won through injudicious use of the whip"
you sir, are so wrong. These are animals, not pets or humans. Who could imagine that whips were introduced as a fun factor,,, not at all. Whips are working tools for these animals that quite often require encouragement as to behave in the manner required. If this is disturbing then eat vegetables, but oh do be careful not to slice them whilst still alive. In fact cook them or freeze em first as to avoid the trauma of screaming vegetables on your beautiful clean plate. Best to leave the dirty work those with clean conscience. Do be careful of stepping on that lawn, would not want to hurt them as well. There is a line and 12 is just fine

Why did the Chief Stipe in Durban not conduct this matter? The other 2 - Moodley and Naidoo had no experience as stipes I'm told. Surely for such a serious charge the most senior man should take charge? On a separate note Mr Ed, are the stats correct or not? I want to double down on my

Whip incidents come up from time to time and always make for interesting and illuminating reading as they tend to strip away the 'I love horses' spin.
'Trying to win' using whatever tactics are necessary seems to sit very comfortably with many followers and punters if it is their money at stake. Horse welfare is seldom, if ever, mentioned or a factor. Instead we have many parrotting codswallop regarding an 'absence of marks' etc. Kudos to these individuals - they clearly understand animals more intimately than the rest of us.
Jockeys also appear to have no shortage of apologists when it comes to breaking rules.
Khumalo has been a serial transgressor of the whip rule in recent years. (NB I didn't say he is not a competent jockey). So he either cannot count or doesn't care. You decide; although I must assume he is vaguesly aware of the rules which are clear and unambiguous. BTW - the whip 'allowance' in South Africa is extremely generous when compared againt other jurisdictions so there is really no excuse for exceeding 12 strikes.
I have seen more races lost than won through injudicious use of the whip. Wouldn't it be nice if South Africa took the initiative and banned its use altogether. Only one country has done that so far but many appear to be moving slowly in that direction.
Racing is in global decline......maybe this is just another of many reasons why the ordinary citizen looks elsewhere for their sporting

Hi Ed, I think SP mentioned recently that the NHA is considering reducing the number of whip strikes even further.
Many SP commentators seem to favour 6, which is the max in the UK and USA.
But even so, it seems the jockeys get carried away at times.
The best jockey in the world, Ryan Moore, went 7 strikes last year November, when winning the USA Breeders Cup on Auguste Rodin (due to run in the King George soon, by the way).
Many pundits say it was his greatest ride ever, because he had to extricate his horse from a boxed in situation and then had to get it going.
Moore got a $16 000 fine (10% of his prize money) and a 1 day suspension for his efforts.
Jockeys can't count?

The Enchanting Currency Of Fate
