Wet Gets Better Of Hollywoodbets Durbanville Meeting
Hi Stephen,
A very well "penned" article, I must say.
Just thinking out aloud and wondering whether our grass track surfaces are as conducive to wet conditions as in the UK where it rains often.
I heard a winning jockey yesterday telling Vicky in his post race interview that there was a dodgy patch at the 800m mark, and that was fairly early on. I also think that Hollywoodbets Durbanville is a pretty tight course and it must be quite concerning for the jockeys navigating the tight bend into the straight.
I heard a young jockey talking to Lucinda Woodruff ( It was a podcast ) after a race at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth where he had been caught wide. He said his horse was continually slipping. That must be scary.
I agree with most of what you have said Stephen, but as you mentioned it would be terrible if there as an accident because of the bad going.
I don't think our boys are over cautious and they are certainly brave souls, race riding in the first

PED vs Medication ( although technically they are all PED) I think its really tough to move a horse for a "positive" if its a medication issue that has been a stable mismanagement situation OR indeed a medication issue.
Vet gives horse a shot, withdraws is 14 days
Horse runs 17 day later and tests positive
3490 threads on social media
BUT in SA horses test positive for trace/existence NOT for quantity.
So horse must get 10mg, vet needs to do 176 horses a day to pay for Rolls Royce so while withdrawing with syringe also is on phone (to Justin) and withdraws 11.5mg injects horse and voila the 14 day period is not an option any longer.
So many variables come into play with medication and so many possible scenarios that moving horses is not the solution.
Of course when treating a horse you want to do it as close the its run as possible. So thats why you get admission of guilt being signed all day long. There cannot be a denial of administering the

Professional racehorse jockeys face significant physical dangers due to the high speeds and proximity of the horses. They risk severe injuries from falls, which can result in broken bones, concussions, or even life-threatening trauma. The lightweight nature of jockeys, combined with the unpredictable behaviour of horses, increases the likelihood of being trampled or crushed during a race. Additionally, the repetitive strain from maintaining a low crouch and controlling a powerful animal can lead to chronic pain and long-term musculoskeletal issues.
While the caution shown by South African jockeys in demanding the cancellation of race meetings due to wet, heavy track conditions reflects their commitment to safety, it can be seen as overly conservative compared to international norms. Racing in less-than-ideal conditions is part of the sport globally, and other jockeys often navigate similar risks without frequent cancellations. While the safety of riders and horses is paramount, a balance must be struck to ensure the sport remains viable for all stakeholders, including owners and trainers who face financial setbacks from frequent cancellations. An open dialogue between jockeys, owners, and racing authorities could help find a middle ground where safety concerns are addressed without unduly impacting the

"SPORTING POST" ERS...
I feel very strongly that the racing BODIES/PRESENTERs are treating us with disdain AFTER banking our EXOTIC$ monies with nary a thought except a BUGGER YOU by not even uttering a whimper as to the WILL PAYS after the cancellation of #7...
Leaving us to runaround to get the WILL PAY I.s.o the race caller, the presenters, or even the racing bodies of said venues.!!
Hopefully my grudge reaches the eyes AND ears of Mr Greg Bortz and other centres.... as the ONLY two presenters to mention the WILL PAYS in their bye-byes are
Neill Pretorius (E/Cape) and the inimitable Lyall Cooper (Gauteng)

I backed Dave in both his big race wins and don't have any issue with him winning Horse of the Year as he won two prestigious WFA events against pretty much the best available opposition. In a year where there wasn't a clear-cut champion in the Politician mould (and those are few and far between anyway) he was a prime candidate and worthy winner.
However, I wonder if we didn't miss a trick by overlooking Quid Pro Quo for HOTY. She obviously wouldn't beat Dave The King in a head to head race, but her achievement in landing that unbelievable treble over a range of distances is something that I doubt we will see again for a while (also factor in the draws and where she came from in some of those races). I'm not saying she is the best horse in the country but the context of her only being a 2yo is important - I do think she landed the outstanding achievement of the season and I think she lit up the sport in a way that no other horse

Gauteng Government Appeal Bid Fails – R500 Million Could Flow Back To Racing
Read an article from the Daily Investor this morning, which quotes a data analysing source iro the turnover on sports betting. R418 billion worth of bets placed on sports betting in 2023, compared to the previous year's R233 billion, that's an 80% year-on-year increase.
Staggering figures!
The market dominated by HWB & Betway, according to the article, with about 80% of the betting occurring online.
PS I wonder how much will be bet on the Dricus du Plessis fight tomorrow morning 💪

Well said once again by Mr Greg Bortz in his speech at the Equus awards, reiterating again the importance of integrity and honesty in horse-racing. He reminded all the players that what he said 12 months ago still holds true and is even more important now, in light of international exposure and opportunities for importing, exporting and racing on the world stage.
All parties have to "keep their noses clean", play by the rules and ensure competitive, honest racing with no "veneukery"! Punters and bettors want to study form, analyse performance and place bets in good faith, knowing that no prohibited substances, underhand tactics and manipulated results are taking place in SA racing. Every horse must go out there to run its best race, races must'nt be used for barrier trials and exercise gallops and all trainers must be transparent and provide information to the betting public, (not tips!) Just relevant information on wellbeing, fitness, tactics and expectations in a race. Punters will make their betting decisions based on factual information. Its important for trainers to understand that they are not doing us a favour by giving punters information, we are doing them a favour by betting on horses and providing them with a livelihood. Punters, owners, racegoers keep the industry
