Thanks Graham!
Picked this one up on Reditt:
The Saffer walks into the Aussie petshop, buys some stuff and when he leaves he says "baie dankie, baie dankie!"
Puzzled, the Aussie replies:
"Sorry sir, we don't sell donkeys..."

I can comment on donkeys on SP, yes?

it comes from the late 80's, early 90's when the young SA whites left for the UK, Aussie etc. It was a derogatory term used by the locals at the time ( think about it ) and it has stuck as a "term of endearment" ever since. My step dad was SA in London and I got served by many "Saffers' at the bar back then, all good

I agree, especially that he was named South Africans first Equine Millionaire. With regards to the Met, yes that’s true. The family decided to fly him down for the race. Great

A sad day indeed. My meeting Val & Ralph goes back to Garnerton Race Course in Kitwe, Zambia. Ralph was a leading trainer in Zambia. I recall his winning a major race with a horse called Quarterdeck.

Long time since we had horses with the (SAF) indicator at such a prestigious meeting.
Anybody know how it happened that expat South Africans came to be nicknamed Saffers in the UK and Australia?
