In full agreement with u, James. Decision to take Candiese was a good one and my thanks to Dev Heffer who kept in contact with me despite his busy schedule (not sure if he had time for a swim in Del Mar beach!) and his views were well used by David Thistleton in Turftalk. Would like to make Hong Kong if I survive up-coming knee op.
Mel Cup: My tip Zardoni, published in SP, looked a likely winner 100m out but had to settle for fourth. Still, backed each-way so still returned a profit

Backed it at 5-1 in the morning, then, in the afternoon there was a FLOOD of money for him.
This is a classy horse.

THE STARTER REPORTED:
a) WILLIE JOHN (G Wright) jumped slow, losing one length.
THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS REPORTED:
a) At the 700m WILLIE JOHN (G Wright) brushed the inside running rail, which then collapsed, which resulted in WILLIE JOHN (G Wright) jumping through the rail and onto the inside of the racetrack. During this incident, Jockey G Wright was dislodged and CARRIACOU (S Hlengwa) took evasive action and raced wide on the latter part of the turn and into the straight. Jockey G Wright was attended to on course by the paramedics and was subsequently stood down by the course Medical Officer. The Veterinary Surgeon was requested to examine WILLIE JOHN.
This incident was brought to the attention of the Racing Operator.
b) ASPECT, the winner, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Trainer VH Marshall was advised. (TJ)
