Kenilworth’s big race day on Saturday features the Gr2 Southern Cross Stakes, and is set to be sponsored by CTS in aid of the Western Cape Equine Trust, writes Sarah Whitelaw.
One of the true heroes of Cape racing, the Western Cape Equine Trust has done stellar work in re-homing and retiring ex-racehorses, in a sport where all too often the horse is the forgotten feature.
Founded in 1994, the Western Cape Equine Trust also assists in raising funds for ex-racehorses off the track. The Trust’s re-homing centre is based in Philippi, and is run by Vice-Chairman Newton Phillips, whom many describe as a modern-day horse-whisperer!
The majority of horses who arrive to be re-homed are donated to the Equine Trust by former owners and trainers, with a few arriving after being rescued from more dire situations.
The day’s feature race, the Southern Cross Stakes, is without question one of the country’s top sprints for fillies and mares.
This 1000m feature has been won by numerous stars over the years, and was won last year by triple Gr1 winner Carry On Alice (Captain Al). The latter again takes her place in this year’s line up.
