Stars, Sticky Buns & Strategy

07h00 Thursday

The traditional pre-Vodacom Durban July Public Gallops will be held at Greyville racecourse on Thursday 28 June, starting at 7am.

The gallops will also be screened live on Tellytrack, Dstv 239.

At this popular annual occasion, the runners based in KZN will be put through their paces, generally running with a stable companion, providing an opportunity for punters to scrutinise them and assess their well-being

Entrance is free of charge, and the event attracts a good crowd, with free coffee and sticky buns offered to all visitors.

Also on course will be several models wearing outfits from the finals of the Vodacom Durban July Fashion Experience programme, presented by Durban Fashion Fair.

The July is the only race in the country that still hosts a compulsory public gallop.

Kenilworth Racing duty manager Teresa Esplin said on the announcement of the Met Gallops being scrapped late last year that trainers didn’t want the gallops, which are a bit close to the race.

She also suggested that the abandonment of the condition was in the best interests of the horses. “Every time you travel them to the racecourse you are putting them at risk and some of them can get stirred up”, she said.

The Inspiring Story Of Dr Marianne Thomson

‘I am writing this as an older, small breeder and in our language, Markus, because this is our war. If I phoned you, I’d be overwhelmed by business jargon within a minute. What makes you so angry that you don’t care what you are doing to our shaky industry? How do you deal with this in your inner, quiet self?’
