Owner Suzette Viljoen completed a fantastic four-feature winning weekend for trainers Justin Snaith and Tony Peter with a double at Turffontein on Sunday that was preceeded by two successes on SplashOut Cape Derby day at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth on Saturday.
After her big earning Royal Aussie had won the Pongracz Listed Jet Master Stakes, and Double Grand Slam had taken the honours in the SplashOut Gr3 Priz Du Cap in facile fashion in a co-owned Snaith double on Saturday, it was another feature double at Turffontein with Golden Sickle winning the Bauhinia and One Fell Swoop showing the benefit of her light weight to win the Betway Gr3 National Currency Sprint.
The Sunday double was for trainer Tony Peter, who saddled three winners on the afternoon.
Formerly run as the Man O’War Sprint, the 1100m contest attracted a field of eight runners and it was the Clint Binda’s Ziyasha who led the charge, tracked by One Fell Swoop.
Into the final 250m, Kaidan Brewer threatened as One Fell Swoop (7-2) crept on the free-striding Ziyasha (10-1), with the 8-10 favourite Lucky Lad being switched in after a tardy start.
The light weight told as One Fell Swoop surged into the lead 100m out and went on to beat Ziyasha by 0,40 lengths in a time of 62,89 secs for the 1100m.
Cliff Hanger (25-2) stayed on well enough for third, with Lucky Lad only getting going late and grabbing fourth in a very decent effort on his return to action and first start as a 3yo.
Bred by the sizzling hot Varsfontein, the tough as teak One Fell Swoop was registering her maiden stakes success and is a daughter of Drakenstein’s deceased War Front stallion Lancaster Bomber out of the one-time winning Philanthropist mare, Imperadora, a half-sister to champion Legal Eagle.
In a moment of good timing, it is worth noting that One Fell Swoop was purchased for R480 000 at the 2022 BSA Cape Yearling Sale
The Viljoen family’s Hopes And Dreams Stud marked their first BSA Cape Yearling Sale on Sunday afternoon, with their 5 lots selling for R620 000 at an average of R124 000.
