Veterans – Sporting Each Way Double

Thrown In On Best Form

Greyville 8th November: Both surfaces saw action on Sunday where the faster of the two 1600m turf races was the bill topping listed KZN Guineas Trial won by the progressive EXIT HERE. Extending his winning sequence to four here, the son of Jay Peg was soon at the head of affairs. He was briefly headed by BELUGA at the top of the straight, but after regaining the lead 350m out, he drew clear to score by two and a quarter.
The supporting act was a pinnacle stakes over 2000m (turf) and here victory went to the favourite SARATOGA DANCER. Not the quickest into stride, the Mambo In Seattle gelding raced in midfield for most of the journey. Once in the home straight though he quickened well and won comfortably by three quarters after striking the front 150m from home.
The best bet on the card for many was CHAPEL QUEEN in the maiden plate over 1000m (poly) and she didn’t let down her supporters. Deep in the red at 4/10 on the off, Dennis Bosch’s charge was soon up handy. She was ridden to lead as they approached the 200m marker and won well by two and a quarter.
Titbits
The exceptionally well handicapped RUMBULLION ran on well from the back of the field when winning the MR66 affair (poly) going away by a length and three quarters.

Another Very Well In

Greyville 10th November: Tuesday’s card also took place on both surfaces. Three of the five races on the poly track were run over 1400m and quickest home amongst these was the former Cape Town campaigner PROF TIGER in the MR70 Handicap. Racing off a mark some 25 points below that of his previous best, on this his first outing for nine months, Andre Nel’s charge lost two lengths at the start and very quickly found himself positioned in the backend of midfield. He made up the ground quickly in the straight and won going away by two and three quarters after taking command 250m out.
The faster of the two 1900m maiden plates on turf was the boy’s affair won by the clear form horse TEN GUN SALUTE. Always deep in the red, the son of Henrythenavigator raced fourth during the early part of the race. He put his head in front going through the 300m and drew clear easily in the closing stages of the race to score by four and three quarters.
All the rage to win race four, a MR74 Handicap over 1800m, was OPEN HEIR, and he did do the business. Backed  into 28/10 joint favourite from 11/2, Doug Campbell’s charge wasn’t the quickest into stride and as a result he raced in midfield early on. He took closer order at the top of the straight and won well by a length and three quarters after assuming command 200m out.
Titbits
The recent maiden winner BUSTER BROWN ran on well from the rear when a three quarter length runner up in the MR70 Handicap over 1400m.

Forceful Traveller

Turffontein 10th November: They raced on the old stand side track on Tuesday evening where three of the eight races were staged over 1160m. Not surprisingly the fastest of these was the bill topping pinnacle stakes in which the Joey Ramsden trained BRUTAL FORCE landed the spoils. Sent off second in the betting market at 33/10, the son of Western Winter was always handy. The 6/10 favourite TRIP TO HEAVEN lost two lengths at the start and after steadily working his way into contention, he struck the front 150m out. Brutal Force ran on stoutly below the distance though and got up late to score by a neck.
The only other distance to stage more than one race was 1600m where BEAUTIFUL SHAY was the quickest home. Freely available at 14/1 to win the MR64 Handicap, Stephen Moffatt’s charge raced in midfield for most of the journey. She put her head in front as they approached the 200m pole and won going away from the pacemaker STARRY SOIREE by a length and a quarter.
After running the Gr1 placed Brazuca to a neck on debut the 3yo SUYOOF always looked to be a good thing in the opening maiden plate over 1160m, and so it proved to be. Deep in the red at 1/4 on the off, Mike De Kock’s charge was soon up handy. He was ridden to lead shortly after passing the 300m marker and only having to be pushed out in the closing stages of the race, he won very easily by three and a half.
Titbits
Poorly drawn TREES OF GREEN came from the back when winning the maiden plate over 1600m going away by a length and a half.

Bred For Success

Kenilworth 11th November: 62,5% of the races in Cape Town on Saturday were run over 1400m and the fastest of the five was the MR91 Handicap won by AMARILLO ROSE. Nibbled at on course into 11/2 from 8’s, Brett Crawford’s charge was content to sit seventh of the nine during the early part of the race. Once given rein though, the bottom weight quickened well and won going away by two and a quarter after striking the front 100m from home.
A MR95 Handicap over the same distance topped the bill and in what proved to be a very false paced affair the favourite SHEER TROUBLE registered his fourth career victory. Always handy in a race run 2,39 seconds slower than that of Amarillo Rose, Mike Bass’ charge ran on stoutly when the race developed into a sprint 400m out, and in a thrilling three way finish he got the verdict by a neck.
Race five on the card was the MR74 Handicap over 1400m in which the two highly regarded runners CHEVAUCHEE and BELA-BELA clashed. Backed into 7/10 Chevauchee was the punters choice, but on the day it was Justin Snaith’s charge who proved to be the stronger. Racing fifth and sixth of the six runners when the race began in earnest, both ran on well. Setting off from the back though, the very well-bred Bela-Bela always looked to be going the better and despite not finding the clearest of passages she won going away by a length and three quarters.
The 3yo ARABIAN WINTER (22/10 into 14/10) was backed into favouritism to win the lucky last, a maiden plate over 1800, and she didn’t let down her supporters. The second winner on the card for the Mike Bass stable, the Western Winter filly was always handy. She put her head in front 150m out and won well by a length from the nibbled at NIGHTINGALE.
Titbits
Running on from the back of the fourteen, the newcomer VILIKAZI didn’t find the clearest of passages when a short head runner up in the opening maiden plate over 1200m.

Strength To Strength

Turffontein 12th November: The fastest of the three 1450m races on the inner track on Thursday was the MR94 Handicap for 3yo’s in which NOAH FROM GOA registered his third win from just four starts. Sent off a strong favourite at even money, Mike De Kock’s charge ran on strongly from his handy position and won well by two and a quarter after striking the front 250m out.
The faster of the two maiden plates over 1200m was the girl’s affair in which we saw a smart performance from the newcomer SUBMERGENCE. Confidently ridden by S’manga Khumalo, the Captain Al filly raced at the back early on. She quickened nicely at the top of the short home straight and with the rest well beaten she comfortably accounted for the front running ULTIMATE SURVIVAL by a length.
The faster of the two 1600m races was the MR80 Handicap in which the deposed favourite LOCO POR GANAR registered his fourth career victory. Always handy, the newly installed favourite FINCHATTON was the first to make a move and looked to have done everything right on striking the front 400m out. Running on from the rear though, Geoff Woodruff’s charge very steadily wore him down below the distance and got up in the dying strides.
Titbits
The 3yo NTOMA opened her account with authority when winning the maiden plate over 1600m.

The Inspiring Story Of Dr Marianne Thomson

‘I am writing this as an older, small breeder and in our language, Markus, because this is our war. If I phoned you, I’d be overwhelmed by business jargon within a minute. What makes you so angry that you don’t care what you are doing to our shaky industry? How do you deal with this in your inner, quiet self?’
