Vercingetorix Colt Tops August 2yo Sale Day 1

Day 2 commences at 10h30

The positivity and upward curve of the South African thoroughbred sales market in the post-covid era looks set to accelerate further after the curtain came down on a first day of spirited bidding at the BSA August 2yo Sale held at the TBA Sales Complex in Johannesburg on Thursday.

The two day sale saw 330 lots catalogued, 54 more than in 2023.

The aggregate of R44 615 000, with an average of R282 373 (R244 631 in 2023) after Day 1, suggests that this renewal will easily outstrip last year’s R59 690 000 gross (which was up 23% on 2022). The median remained at R160 000.

Top seller on Day 1 was the Wilgerbosdrift Stud consigned lot 29 named Torremolinos, a handsome son of Vercingetorix (Silvano) out of the Rock Of Gibraltar sired champion and triple Gr1 winner Alboran Sea.

He is a half-brother to dual Listed Memorial Mile winner Marmara Sea and fell to the R2,8 million bid of Rakesh Singh.

Last year’s topseller was the Maine Chance consigned lot 235 named Lucrative, a daughter of Vercingetorix out of the Querari mare La Colossa who fetched R1,4million. She won first time out for Dean Kannemeyer on 21 July.

Lots 191 – 332 will be offered on the second and final day of the 2024 BSA August 2yo Sale which commences at 10h30 on Friday morning.
