Var Leads The Field

Currently South Africa’s Leading Sire of 2YOS

Avontuur’s leading sire Var has made his customary outstanding start to the new season with his juveniles. South Africa’s leading source of speed made it three juvenile winners from just four runners (Var’s other juvenile Navarone having finished fourth on debut) when the Ian Heynes bred Star Burst Galaxy made a winning debut at Turffontein on Tuesday.

Snaith’s Var Ahead scores on debut

The filly, who is out of the Doowaley mare Majestic Star, landed the race after an objection to original winner Seattle Singer was upheld. It was more than five lengths back to third place finisher Queenie.

Star Burst Galaxy was an R800 000 buy from the 2015 Emperors Palace Select Yearling Sale and has a full sister, named Star Evolution, on offer at next month’s Cape Premier Yearling Sale.

Her sire’s previous juvenile runners were Var Ahead and Hamunaptra, both of whom scored on debut. Var Ahead looks likely to run next in the Listed Summer Juvenile Stakes on Met day at the end of January and he could well give Var yet another above average black type performer.

Var is currently South Africa’s Leading Sire of 2YOS by stake money and he looks on course for another top season.

Sire of 17 Grade One horses (and counting), Var has 23 lots on offer at the Cape Premier Yearling Sale including a filly out of G1 Computaform Sprint runner up Mocha Java (Lot 30), a three parts sister to G1 Golden Horse Sprint hero Contador (Lot 56), a half brother to G3 winner Punk Rocker and this season’s G1 filly Taffety Tart (Lot 66), a filly out of a stakes placed own sister to champion Mother Russia (Lot 190), and a half brother to G1 winner Divine Jury and new sire Divine Jet (Lot 193).

Var also has two well bred lots on sale at February’s Val De Vie Yearling Sale – a full brother to classy filly Garibondy (Lot 4), and a half brother to ill-fated G1 winner War Horse as well as recent G2 Supreme Cup hero Deputy Jud (Lot 9).

The Enchanting Currency Of Fate

It is eerie to think that there would have been no Siren’s Call, Sound Of Warning, or for that matter Call To Unite, had fate not decreed that Enchanted Cove follow her dam to South Africa, and that Peter de Beyer had the foresight to return Elusive Fort back home from the States as well!
