Unzen Erupts Onto The Scene!

Roy Magner turns second starter out in fine fettle

Apprentice Kaidan Brewer and trainer Robbie Sage teamed up with the Erupt colt Unzen to cause a surprise when the Tawny Syndicate product stormed to victory in the R400 000 Bloodstock South Africa Sales Cup (C&G) at Turffontein on Saturday.

With just one run under the belt, Unzen was easy to back at 14-1 and came from off the pace with a sustained run to hold off the eyecatching Mike de Kock / Hollywood Syndicate first-timer Tyrconnell, who rattled late from some way off the gallop.

Backed on his Turffontein 1000m debut on 22 September, Unzen clearly relished the step up in ground and ran on powerfully to beat the 33-1 Tyrconnell by 0,5 lengths in a time of 88.95 seconds in a Bipot knockout.

It was a sentimental victory for the veteran conditioner as he trained the winner’s dam.

Bred by the Tawny Syndicate, Unzen is a son of Maine Chance stallion Erupt (Dubawi ) out of the one-time winning Toreador mare Adella.

A winner of 1 race with a place from his 2 starts, Unzen took his stakes bank to R194 000.

The 1450m contest was restricted to eligible graduates of the 2021 BSA August 2YO and November 2YO Sales, with the winner’s price tag R230 000.

The Inspiring Story Of Dr Marianne Thomson

‘I am writing this as an older, small breeder and in our language, Markus, because this is our war. If I phoned you, I’d be overwhelmed by business jargon within a minute. What makes you so angry that you don’t care what you are doing to our shaky industry? How do you deal with this in your inner, quiet self?’
