Unstoppable Untapable

Untapable lays claim to 3yo Champion Filly title with Cotillion Stakes win

Winchell Thoroughbreds Untapable rebounded off a fifth-place finish against males in her last start to hold off Sweet Reason for a one-length victory in the $1 million Gr1 Cotillion Stakes at Parx Racing on Saturday, 20 September 2014.

Ridden by Rose Napravnik for trainer Steve Asmussen as the 124-pound topweight and 2-5 favorite, Untapable tracked early leaders Jojo Warrior and Cassatt until the second turn and took the lead in midstretch.

The Cotillion was the third Gr1 victory this year for the daughter of Tapit – Fun House (by Prized) bred in Kentucky by Winchell, having previously won the Longines Kentucky Oaks and Mother Goose Stakes. She has now won seven of 10 starts and earned $1,934,725.

Previous to the Cotillion for 3-year-old fillies, Untapable filly finished fifth as the 7-5 favorite against males in the $1 million Gr1 Haskell Invitational Handicap, won by Bayern. Bayern was also entered on the 20 September Parx card, facing Gr1 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands and Gr1 Preakness winner California Chrome in the $1 million Gr2 Pennsylvania Derby.

The Cotillion win will likely have sewed up the 3-year-filly championship for Untapable, impressive 9 1/2-length winner of the Rachel Alexandra and 7 3/4-length winner of the Gr2 Fair Grounds Oaks earlier in the year. As a 2-year-old, Untapable won the Gr2 Pocahontas Stakes and was third in the Hollywood Starlet.

Trainer Steve Asmussen listed the Breeders’ Cup Distaff as her next likely target.

Note the great job by the handler does keep Sweet Reason in her stall (gate 2) when she breaks through:-
