The unique attraction of night racing returns to Turffontein Racecourse on Tuesday 15 October, when Phumelela will host a ten race programme.

While there is no feature event carded on the night, two R115 000 Pinnacle Stakes, one over 1000m and the other over 1400m, have attracted high quality fields. Most of the runners are chasing fitness levels for the forthcoming Highveld Feature Season.

Since Turffontein Racecourse opened in 1887 it has proven a popular venue, despite the ever changing character of the surrounding areas.

The historical racecourse, which offers racegoers a spectacular view of Johannesburg, underwent a R2-million revamp to turn it into a world class racing venue as well as to cater for the influx of racing fans that descended upon the introduction of night racing in November 2009.

Tuesday’s meeting is the first of six events that are scheduled to transform the warm summer racing evenings between now and year end.

Phumelela’s Events Manager  Cherise Tem-Tem,  confirmed that every night racing meeting would be themed with international cuisine and live entertainment.

“Our caterers have put together some exciting menus showcasing traditional dishes from around the world including France, Germany and the USA. This is back by popular demand and is clearly designed to satisfy the needs of the regular and newer race goers alike,’ she said.

Booking is essential on: 011 681 1702.

Diarise the scheduled meetings:

The Inspiring Story Of Dr Marianne Thomson

‘I am writing this as an older, small breeder and in our language, Markus, because this is our war. If I phoned you, I’d be overwhelmed by business jargon within a minute. What makes you so angry that you don’t care what you are doing to our shaky industry? How do you deal with this in your inner, quiet self?’
