  • R1

Preview: MISS ELEGANCE (2) is the one to beat here after a wide margin debut win over this distance category followed by a good two length fifth in the Grade 2 SA Fillies Nursery. ENTENTE (5) has not been disgraced against good sorts and on pedigree will relish the step up in trip.  BADRAH (4) was backed on debut and although by speedster Deep Field her second dam was a middle distance horse who was a half-sister to Grade 1 sprinters Rocket Man and Our Giant. (David Thiselton 2-5-4)

  • R2

Preview: NOURBESE (11) stayed on strongly for a third in the Grade 2 SA Nursery and is the one to beat back in the maidens over a step up in trip which should suit and from a good draw. EURO CENT (7) made a good debut and can improve. GRAZINGINTHEGRASS (9) was not disgraced on debut in what has turned out to be a strong maiden. (David Thiselton 11-7-9)

  • R3

Preview: SHE’S A CRACKER (6) is a big horse with plenty of substance and caught the eye last time staying on strongly over 1200m after being a touch outpaced, so this step up in trip should suit but she does have a tricky draw. NAZARETH (2) wore first-time blinkers last time over this trip when a 6,25 length fourth behind the promising Caralluma and and the form of that race is working out well. NU BELL (3) should come on from her fair comeback effort and has a fair draw over an ideal trip. (David Thiselton 6-2-3)

  • R4

CAIRON (1) is well regarded and has blinkers on for the first time from a plum draw over a step up in trip which should suit being by Twice Over out of quite a speedy Western Winter mare whose dame won over this trip. BARAK (3) stayed on strongly last time over this trip and just failed but was drawn in pole that day and is now drawn wide. EPPAGILIA (4) is consistent and tries a step up in trip which is not garanteed to suit as she is by Redoute’s Choice stallion Redoute’s Promise (who is out of the miler Perfect Promise) and her dam won over 1100m but the latter is by Victory Moon and there is some stamina further down the pedigree. (David Thiselton 1-3-4)

  • R5

PAX ROMANA (3) went close in his comeback run with first-time blinkers on over 1500m and he is now drawn in pole over a slight step up in trip which he will appreciate. WHIPPING BOY (10) has some eyecatching form and if repeating either of his last two runs he will be right there although he does now have a tough draw. BASSAM (4) is a progressive sort who made a good comeback last time and from a good draw he will appreciate the step up in trip. NORLAND (7) is reliable and has a plum draw over an ideal trip. PRINCE EVLANOFF (1) is better than his last start and will be looking to bounce back. (David Thiselton 3-10-4-7-1)

  • R6

RIVERSTOWN (1) is ideally distance suited and was unlucky last time when taking a false step close to home but he does have a tough draw to overcome. PUTONTHEREDLIGHT (7) has class and scope and should start coming into his own. ROCK THE GLOBE (2) ran a fine race over the too sharp 1200m last time and can do well here if able tyo overcome a high draw. KAYLA’S CHAMP (12) is officially the best weighted horse here and over a suitable trip has a 4kg claimer up to increase her weight advantage and she also has a good draw. SECRET DREAM (3) should have come on from her comeback effort and she is drawn well over a step up in trip she will appreciate. (David Thiselton 1-7-2-12-3)

MALTEZA (3) flashed up late the last time she tried this trip and was staying on over this trip in her comeback run so can go close here from a fair draw. STRADA STATALE (5) is race fit and won her only race over this distance so can go close from a plum draw. CRIME SCENE (4) has her third run after a layoff and is drawn in pole over her probable optimum distance. KAPAMA (2) has been in fine form since hold up tactics have been employed and she lacked room last time so has a definite shout here if having more luck after likely being dropped out again from another wide draw. PASSION PEACH (13) is capable of a strong finish over this trip and is also likely to be dropped out from a wide draw. FLORIBUNDA (8) hasn’t run for 274 days but in that last race finished less than a length behind the darling of the SA turf Summer Pudding in a 1600m handicap. (David Thiselton 3-5-4-2-13-8)

  • R8

SEKHMET (4) was staying on behind a promising sort over this trip last time and should have come on from the run so is the one to beat from a fair draw. OH MERCY ME (5) is drawn in pole with a 1,5kg claimer up and this is a suitable coure and distance running fresh. MAMAQUERA (9) won her comeback well and starts off handicapping on a reasonable mark. ENCRYPTION (1) is in fine form and can overcome a mere two point raise for her last win although she does have another wide draw to overcome. MISS KHALIFA (11) lost a length when beaten 2,75 lengths by Encryption last time and she is 1,5kg better off but is widely drawn again. SOUL OF WIT (2) should handle this trip slight step down in trip and should have come on from her last run and Strydom can help her overcome a wide draw. (David Thiselton 4-5-9-1-11-2)

  • R9

WAY OF THE WORLD (2) was bumped close to home last time and promoted from second to third over this trip so now looks to be on a competitive mark and can go close again here from a fair draw although it is never easy against the boys. WE ALL CHOMIES (5) was staying on well for second in his last run before lockdown over this trip but does have a tricky draw to overcome. STRIKEITLIKEAMATCH (11) was not far behind the latter in that race and has a good draw. SHORTSTOP (10) should have come on from his good comeback run but does have a tough draw to overcome. WRITTEN IN STONE (3) can be relied on to run on over this trip and Piere Strydom can help him overcome a wide draw. REBEL RENEGADE (12) has a plum draw and although he would prefer shorter he is interesting here in the prevailing fast conditions. (David Thiselton 2-5-11-10-3-12)

The Inspiring Story Of Dr Marianne Thomson

‘I am writing this as an older, small breeder and in our language, Markus, because this is our war. If I phoned you, I’d be overwhelmed by business jargon within a minute. What makes you so angry that you don’t care what you are doing to our shaky industry? How do you deal with this in your inner, quiet self?’
