A colt and filly by Trippi topped the prices at the Cape Yearling Sale Book Two, held at Durbanville.
The sale topper came late in the sale, when Mike Bass outlasted the opposition to secure a Trippi colt at R575k. The youngster is the first foal of his 3-time winning dam, whose dam in turn is a 3-part sister to Model Man, from a successful Odessa-family. The colt is bred by Ian Heyns, and was consigned through Drakenstein Stud.
Two other colts broke the half-a-million barrier, both purchased for R500k by Markus Jooste’s Mayfair Speculators. Like the sale-topper, both were late in the sale. One a Greys Inn, and first foal foal of his dam, from a family of sprinter/milers. He was consigned by Rosedene Stud. The other, consigned by Highlands, is a Jay Peg half brother to a winner, his dam half sister to a host of stakes performers out of US-bred Northern Pine.
The top priced Trippi-filly fell to a bid from Form Bloodstock, at R325k. Consigned by Drakenstein Stud, she’s half sister to a US G3 winner, their dam half sister to a US G1 winner.
The sale was strongly supported by the Klawervlei-clan, both in yearling offered and bought. Seven of the highest priced lots went to Mayfair Speculators (Jooste) and Rainbow Beach Trading (v Niekerk), who clearly have an eye on the big incentives linked to graduates from the Book Two sale.
The overall sale average was up 36%, to R131k from R96k last year. Median price followed suit, going from R60k last year to 80k. Split by sex, colts went from R75k to R100k, fillies R55k to R60k.
The upward trend in prices from 2012 and from Book One (January 2013) continues!
