An innovative alternative first leg option for prospective Triple Crown and Triple Tiara candidates is bound to attract a wider spectrum of national ability to the Highveld’s showpiece prizes for 3yo’s. Two of the Cape’s 3yo classics have been included as optional first legs to the traditional R1 million Gr1 Betting World Guineas and the R500 000 Gr2 Wilgerbosdrift Fillies Guineas.

The R7-million SASCOC Triple Crown for 3-year-olds is the richest series of races in Africa and was won last season by Geoff Woodruff’s Black Minnaloushe colt, Louis The King.

For the first time this century, the Grand Parade Cape Guineas and the Avontuur Estate Cape Fillies Guineas are included as possible first leg qualifiers.

Horse Chestnut won the Cape Guineas in 1999 en route to his Triple Crown success.

This move will create excellent opportunities for Cape and KZN challengers to qualify and is likely to enhance the level of competition and credibility.

On the flipside, it also effectively gives horses two chances of qualifying.

The Triple Crown comprises the following:

Leg 1: The R1-million Grand Parade Cape Guineas (Grade 1) 1600m (Kenilworth Saturday 20 December 2014) OR Leg 1: The R1-million Betting World Gauteng Guineas (Grade 2) 1600m (Turffontein Standside Saturday 28 February 2015)

Leg 2: The R2-million SA Classic (Grade 1) 1800m (Turffontein Standside (D/N) Saturday 28 March 2015)

Leg 3: The R2-million SA Derby (Grade 1) 2450m (Turffontein Standside Saturday 25 April 2015)

A bonus of R2 million will be paid to owner/s of the horse that wins all three legs of the Triple Crown

The R3.5-million / R4-million Wilgerbosdrift SA Triple Tiara for 3-year-old fillies is the richest series of races for fillies in Africa.
