Do I have to be a member of Cape Racing to participate?

The Sale is open to all. You can view the yearlings in the stable complex on Tuesday 4th June 2024 and Wednesday 5th June 2024 between 9am and 5pm

Can I arrive on 6th June and bid for a yearling?

To purchase a yearling from the Cape Racing Winter Yearling Sale, you’ll need to apply for a buyer’s card. One would need to book a table in the 1881 Lounge as space is limited. Table bookings can be made through [email protected]

How do I get a buyer’s card?

Apply online https://www.caperacingsales.co.za/buyers-card/ and if you are experiencing any issue, contact Jo Knowles [email protected]

If I have a successful bid, how do I choose a trainer?

Things to consider are: Where do you live? Do you want to see your horse at the stables or on race day. If yes, start with trainers in the province where you live.

How important are regular updates? Ask a Cape Racing Sales person to introduce you to a few trainers at the Sale and get a feel for them and ask questions.

The biggest suggestion is to ask people and use your initiative.

Do I have to be there in person, or can I bid online?

The Cape Racing Winter Yearling Sale has a remote bidding facility available. Apply online https://www.caperacingsales.co.za/zoom-bidding-and-buyers-card/

Is there a minimum reserve price attached to the Yearlings catalogued?

The minimum bid for the Cape Racing Winter Yearling Sale is R20 000. Reserves on horses are permitted. The vendor will set the reserve at an amount they feel suitable and if the reserve is not reached, the horse will be declared not sold.

What is the Cape Racing Sale Juvenile Bonus?

The Juvenile Bonus of R100,000 offered by Cape Racing, of which R75,000 goes to the owner(s) and R25,000 to the vendor for the first 40 winning graduates on their Juvenile maiden win in qualifying races. T’s and C’s apply.

I’ve heard people talk about pin-hooking. What is this?

Pin-hooking is an expression to describe the practice of buying a horse at one stage of their development (in this case a yearling) and then selling that horse at a later stage. An example of this is the two-year-old colt One Stripe, who was pin-hooked for R100,000 and later sold as an unraced two-year-old for R1.4-million. To participate in the pin-hooking incentive scheme, send your request to Justin Vermaak via [email protected]

What are the chances of success if I buy into a Syndicate?

In racing, as in life, there are no guarantees of anything. However, being part of a Syndicate will create new friendships and you’ll have a lot of fun along the way. Examples of success include Bass Racing’s Centenary Club (Future Variety won a Listed sprint race), while Snaith Racing’s The King’s Club have a Grade 1 performer in The Grey King. More stables also have successful Cape Racing Sales graduates that have won recently, All is Green won for Greg Ennion’s Genuine Ennion Syndicate and All Out For Six has won twice for Vaughan Marshall’s One World Syndicate. There are currently 17 verified Cape Turf Club syndicates.More syndicate information is available on the Cape Racing website: https://caperacing.co.za/cape-turf-club/

How much will it cost me to enter a syndicate?

That would depend on the purchase price of the horse and the percentage stake you would have. Some syndicates offer from 1%. As the expression goes: You can have a 1% stake but 100% fun. The Syndicates will post adverts outlining the costs involved and you can communicate directly with the syndicators for more information. These adverts are typically posted on the syndicate’s social media pages.

Find them here: https://caperacing.co.za/cape-turf-club/

How can I express interest in joining a Syndicate?

You can contact the Syndicators directly. If you don’t know any Syndicators, contact Devon Pretorius [email protected] as Devon can provide information and insight on the 17 Cape Turf Club verified Syndicates.

What graduates have come from this particular Yearling Sale?

This is the first Cape Racing Winter Yearling Sale solely for yearlings, but winners from 2023’s Mixed Sale already include All Out For Six, Rama Forcesa and All Is Green.

How many Lots are on offer at the 2024 Cape Racing Winter Yearling Sale?

There are 115 Lots catalogued, with 109 coming under the hammer at this stage
