The Transparency Pipe Dream

Open letter to Computaform

An open letter to Computaform has been addressed via the Sporting Post Mailbag.

Selwyn Elk writes that having owned a Racing Publication in the 70’s, SA Racing Mirror (incidentally bought out by Computaform in 1977), he understands the importance of giving readers as much information as possible to enhance their chances of winning in a game that is sometimes like playing ice hockey barefoot!

What annoys me intensely is your feature “Trainers Comments FIRST-TIMERS/RESTED”, which appears in every edition.

Although horseracing cries out for transparency, this unfortunately is only a “pipe dream”.

Although it is a Trainer’s prerogative to make any comments on his runners, if he/she prefers not to do so, then so be it.

In my opinion if a Trainer prefers not to comment on their day’s runners, then their name should not appear in the Feature – the comment “NO COMMENT” is in fact a comment, telling the racing public that they are not prepared to share their thoughts on their respective runners for the meeting and adds no value to your publication whatsoever.

Wishing you and your family compliments of the season.
