Equus 2022 - media news

Now officially South Africa’s most acclaimed horseracing photographer, Durban-based Candiese Lenferna walked away with the Equus Media Award for still photography for the second year running at the national racing accolades function at Emperors Palace on Wednesday.

The recipient of the 2018 Anita Akal Industry Award, the 43 year old Mom of two daughters enjoyed a momentous family evening. Her husband Warren Lenferna was acknowledged with the Equus Media award for broadcasting.

Candice’ image of the now newly -crowned Equus Horse Of The Year Captain’s Ransom enjoying the  waves was adjudged the winner, in a field of seasoned and rising star ‘photies’.

Hubby Warren’s GTV In The Box Seat interview with new Kenilworth Racing Executive Chairman designate Greg Bortz caught the eye of the judges in the broadcast category.

“I am shocked and overwhelmed!” the hardworking lady of the lens told the Sporting Post afterwards.

Candice was secretary to the KZN Breeders years ago and only started taking photographs of horses as there was often nobody available to do so.

Warren is employed by Gold Circle Publishing, and is a familiar face on Gallop TV, where his passion for the game shines through.

The three media categories included the Written material (print/electronic) category, which was won by past winner Robyn Louw, a no-nonsense veteran of the Sporting Post in years past.

The South African racing media has enjoyed something of a love-hate relationship with the industry over the past two decades, but the climate is far healthier with some professional acknowledgement and open-minded management in the structures.
