Bowman & Berry Miss Today

Day two of The Championships

Leading jockeys Hugh Bowman and Tommy Berry will both be sidelined on one of the biggest days in Sydney racing today after both picked up suspensions at Rosehill on Saturday.

Neither jockey will feature on day two of The Championships while Bowman is also set to miss All Aged Stakes day after receiving a lengthy ban for failing to ride out Avilius in the GrI Tancred Stakes over 2400m.

The Chris Waller-trained Verry Elleegant ran away with the $1.5 million feature, beating home Kris Lees’ Mustajeer and Godolphin’s Avilius.

Racing NSW stewards believe Bowman should have shown more vigour on Avilius over the concluding stages when challenged by Mustajeer and charged the Hall Of Fame jockey under AR131(b) for ‘failing to ride his mount out’.

Bowman pleaded guilty to the charge. He will be out of the saddle from Sunday, 5 April and will be free to ride again on 24 April.

Berry’s indiscretion occurred earlier in the day for his steer on Pink Beau in the Group III Schweppervescence over 1400m).

The stewards’ report read:

Near the 400m he (Berry) permitted his mount to shift out, resulting in Obligatory being taken out on to Aftermath, resulting in Aftermath being taken out across the running of Sunborn, causing that runner to be checked and losing its rightful running.

Berry pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR131(a) and was rubbed out for five meetings. His ban will begin on Sunday, 5 April and expire on Tuesday, 14 April.

Berry will still get the chance to ride Warning in next Saturday’s Australian Derby as his ban will begin his ban the following day.
