The Boy’s from Brazil

The status of the South American thoroughbred has been on the rise for the past few decades. Most recently, it has taken another great leap forward with the Kentucky Derby victory of Animal Kingdom, a rare example of a winner of that great race sired by a South American-bred stallion. He is not the first such winner (Gato Del Sol, winner in 1982, was a son of Cougar 2nd, the Chilean-bred stallion who raced so successfully in California in the early ‘70s before enjoying a very good stud career in the States) but even so the excellence of his win was enough to reflect particular credit on South American bloodstock, writes John Berry.
