Apprentice Thabiso Gumede’s operation on his fractured right leg after a horrific fall in the final race at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Sunday appears to have been a success.
The talented 20 year old rider was rushed to hospital in severe pain after he was dislodged from his mount Prince Tyrion at the 450m.
A subsequent Stipes inspection of the saddle established that the fittings which attach the stirrup iron became detached on the right side of the saddle.
Speaking to the Sporting Post, Thabiso’s sponsor Candiese Lenferna said that her favourite jockey was no longer in pain and hopes to be discharged in the next 48 hours.
“He was remarkably perky,” said the Equus Award -winning photographer whose youngest daughter Mia sent Thabs some fan mail via a hand-drawn get well soon card.
Thabiso is reportedly overwhelmed by all the messages of good wishes he has received.
Late last month he rode his 60th career which entitled him to his SA Jockey Academy white blazer.
He is due to come out of his time this year.
