Ramsden Leads The Way

First Cape 2yo winner in open company

Joey Ramsden achieved a milestone for the 2017/18 season when saddling the first 2yo to win in the Cape in open company this term in the Maine Chance Farms bred Var 2yo Tarsus.

Joey Ramsden – good form maintained

The beautifully-bred chestnut beat a mixed bunch, including some rather modest older horses in the Maiden Plate over 1000m to open the Kenilworth Saturday jackpot.

Tarsus, who is out of a French stakes winner Tala (by Lomitas), races in a partnership of Maine Chance and Qatar Racing and was winning at his third start. His victory crowned a popular race for exotic backers. He was confidently ridden by Donovan Dillon.

Tarsus only received 3kgs from the older horses, although the official weight-for-age scale suggests the youngsters should be getting over 8kgs.

There was some drama after the first race when the jockeys identified a divot between the 500m and 600m on the straight track.

They duly stuck to the outside for the second race and it was surprising to hear no announcement of a race review after things got typically tight up the outside rail.
