Tarry’s Princess Follows The Southern Cross

Majorca Stakes is her summer target

Class prevailed courtesy of a terrific training feat by Sean Tarry when the 5yo mare Princess Calla returned from a 32 week break following her HSH Princess Charlene Gr1 Empress Club Stakes victory at Turffontein, when she flashed up late to win the R350 000 wsb.co.za Gr2 Southern Cross Stakes at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth on Saturday.

The well-travelled mare has been all over the country in a variety of yards during her distinguished racing career, and came out firing on all cylinders in what will go down as an astute move by multiple champion Tarry to ‘run the speed out of her’ before heading to the Sceptre Stakes and her Hollywoodbets Kenilworth Summer Festival goal of the Gr1 Majorca Stakes on Cape Town Met day.

Allowed to relax by Gavin Lerena as the lightning fast Iphiko went quickly out front, Princess Calla was unleashed at the 250m marker and got up in a thrilling finish.

Princess Calla (5-1) stormed home to beat Iphiko (8-1) and Stiptelik (25-2) in a time of 58,38 secs.

Trainer Sean Tarry felt that his charge would need it and said he was honoured to be given the honours to guide her through the summer.

Bred by Maine Chance Farms, Princess Calla is by Flower Alley (Distorted Humor)out of the Captain Al mare Princess Royal.

A R600 000 purchase from the 2019 Cape Premier Yearling Sale, Princess Calla has now won 6 races with 9 places from 16 starts for stakes of R1 967 975.
