Louis The King – Triple Crown winning graduate
Bloodstock South Africa’s Suncoast KZN Yearling Sale, which kicks off once more on 2 and 3 July amidst the hype of the Vodacom Durban July, is a sale fast developing a reputation for producing a number of Graded Stakes winning horses each year since it relocated to the beautiful Durban winter venue of Suncoast in 2011.
The sale which has attracted much attention through its KZN Yearling Sale Million race, run on Vodacom Durban July day, has grown from an average of R45 392 per yearling sold in 2011 to R102 096 in 2014.
The 2015 catalogue has been released and will see first season KZN sires’ Curved Ball, Golden Sword and Traffic Guard represented.
2012 proved to be a vintage year for the sale, amongst its graduates is South African Gr1 Triple Crown winner Louis The King, Gr1 Allan Robertson Championship winner Happy Valentine, KZN-bred Gr2 SA Fillies Nursery winner Virgo’s Babe and KZN-bred Gr2 Umkhomazi winner Colour Of Courage, the latter bred by Backworth Stud.
Same Jurisdiction – top 3yo
2013 Sales graduate Same Jurisdiction took home the KZN Yearling Sale Million in 2014, and less than a month later won the Gr1 Thekweni Stakes for trainer Duncan Howells and breeders Klawervlei Stud.
Recently retired to stud, Louis The King is a 2012 graduate who passed through the ring for a mere R55 000, whilst Virgo’s Babe, by Malhub and bred by Midland’s Thoroughbreds never attracted a bid.Happy Valentine, bred by Maine Chance and owned by Team Valor, was exported and has since won and placed in France and England respectively whilst Colour Of Courage – who in the process gave his sire Judpot his first Bold Black Type, was snapped up by Mauritius.
Royal Pleasure – flying Visionaire filly
The most recent newsmaker off the 2014 Suncoast KZN Yearling Sale has been the KZN-bred two year old daughter of Summerhill’s freshman sire Visionaire, Gr3 Strelitzia winning Royal Pleasure.
Owned in partnership by the 3A Racing Syndicate, Anant and Vaneshree Singh and breeder Team Valor International, the aptly named filly consigned by Summerhill Sales sold for just R30 000. She won all three of her first starts only to finish just out of the placings behind Entisaar(AUS) in the Gr1 Allan Robertson.
Royal Pleasure has earned more than seven times her selling price, taking home R232 500 in stakes.Siblings to Graded Winners on sale include a King’s Chapel half-brother to Gr2 winner The Mouseketeer from Bush Hill Stud and Lot 172 with plenty of paddock value, a King Of Kings half-sister to Vodacom Durban July winner Dunford, Grisham and Gr3 winner King Of Torts from Bruce Le Roux’s Spring Valley Stud.
