The gates to the yellow brick road that leads to the R5 million Gr1 Sun Met in 58 days time were opened on Wednesday as 31 horses stepped into the big race limelight at first entry stage.
It is early days but Kenilworth Racing will be pleased to see that the newly introduced weight-for-age Boogie Man hasn’t set fear and panic into the hearts of starry eyed owners and trainers – with close on 15% more horses docking up the non-refundable R5 700 entry fee than was the case in 2016, when the race carried conditions.
While winning the Met will always be the ultimate prize in the game, it still takes a bold stroke and a helluva serious belief in a horse’s ability to take on the likes of Legal Eagle – and actually sign the second cheque of R45 600 for the final declaration fee. While all our big name owners are represented in the first entry schedule, not everybody is a business tycoon with pots of cash.
It’s tempting – the first cheque is a generous R2 850 000 and the entry costs are recovered up to tenth finisher, who banks R50 000.
