Klawervlei Stud’s promising young stallion Pomodoro, who provided champion trainer Sean Tarry with his first success in the Vodacom Durban July, made an eye catching start to his stud career when his very first two-year-old to race ran a storming second over 900 metres at Kenilworth on Saturday.

Pomodoro colt Royal Italian, trained like Pomodoro by Sean and owned like his famous sire by Chris Van Niekerk, made a big first impression when running on strongly for second place, beaten just a head, in the Cape’s first juvenile race of the 2017-2018 racing season and he looks to have a bright future ahead of him.
Bred by Highlands Stud, Royal Italian was a R100 000 buy from the 2017 Emperors Palace Select Yearling Sale.
His trainer Sean Tarry commented about Pomodoro and his progeny after Royal Italian’s eye catching debut:
“It hasn’t taken as long as expected for the penny to drop with them, and they are starting to improve quickly now. Royal Italian’s run on Saturday is very exciting for Pomodoro-especially that they are showing this early over the minimum trip and it is also a quick reminder that his Broodmare Of The Year dam Golden Apple had solid early juvenile form. Royal Italian himself will be aimed at one of the big two-year-old races on Sun Met day next year.”
Sean Tarry – exciting start
This was a smart start for the former Derby winning Pomodoro, who has a large number of well-bred two-year-olds yet to represent him this season.
An exceptionally versatile and talented performer himself, Pomodoro (who himself never raced at two) won eight races from 1160-2450m with his victories including the Gr1 Vodacom Durban July and Gr1 SA Derby. Pomodoro, who won or placed in seven Gr1 races, accounted for some of the best horses of his generation, including champions Beach Beauty, Capetown Noir, and leading first season sire What A Winter.
One of 22 Gr1 winners for seven times champion sire Jet Master, Pomodoro is out of Broodmare Of The Year Golden Apple, herself a daughter of multiple champion sire and broodmare sire Northern Guest. (He is bred on the same Jet Master/Northern Guest cross as champions J J The Jet Plane and In The Fast Lane).
Pomodoro’s dam, Golden Apple, was not only a top class broodmare but a classic winning racemare, who was runner up in the Debutante Stakes (beating champion sprinter Ruby Clipper) at two before going on to win the Gr2 Gosforth Park Fillies Guineas at three.
The July winner has five quality lots on offer at January’s Cape Premier Yearling Sale including siblings to high class performers Wonderwall (Lot 175) and Al Mariachi (134) and a colt out of Gr1 Thekwini Stakes winner Roxanne (Lot 123).
