Saturday’s puzzle was probably the toughest test in the lockdown puzzle series to date.
Congratulations to Jay August whose perseverance paid dividends when he came up with Kipling son, Top Secret, who won the Queen’s Plate twice – in 1949 when it was known as the King’s Plate and then the first Queen’s Plate in 1952.
Jay pointed out that Top Secret won the 1952 renewal in a course record time of 98.4s, beat the benchmark held by Moonlit from 1937.
Here is a snapshot of the honour roll over that period, for interest:
November 27, 1954 | Queen’s Plate | 1 | 1600 | Good | Laddie |
October 24, 1953 | Queen’s Plate | 1 | 1600 | Good | Rialto |
October 25, 1952 | Queen’s Plate | 1 | 1600 | Good | Top Secret |
October 27, 1951 | King’s Plate | 1 | 1600 | Good | Black Cap (ire) |
October 28, 1950 | King’s Plate | 1 | 1600 | Good | Black Cap (ire) |
October 29, 1949 | King’s Plate | 1 | 1600 | Good | Top Secret |
