Millard Or De Kock? Or Not That Simple?

Comparing different generations - skews the picture

Terrance Millard

Where do we start with a debate on our greatest trainer? When Soqrat won the 2018 Cape Guineas, Mike de Kock surpassed the late Terrance Millard’s record 117 Gr1 winner mark.

Does the yardstick of Gr1 winners automatically make Mike de Kock the greatest?

The legendary Mr Millard retired in 1991. The two men came from different generations.

Mr Millard practically owned the Paddock Stakes, winning it sixteen times and the Fillies Guineas an extraordinary nine times. He won the July six times. He won sixteen of our thirty Gr1 races in one year at the peak of his power.

He named Syd Garrett as his inspiration. The Wizard of Roamer Lodge, revered in the industry, saddled eleven Met winners!

Then Syd Laird won seven Durban July’s and won the SA Championship eight times. He was the first inductee as a racehorse trainer into the SA Hall Of Fame.

What about the new generation of Sean Tarry, Justin Snaith – the Summer King, Geoff Woodruff…?

And  the ‘smaller yards’, like Joey Soma, Stuart Pettigrew, Corne Spies, the youthful Adam Marcus, who have won Gr1’s with less buying power or smaller numbers?
