A Quartet Of Threats To Racing

Time for stats - how many owners are leaving?

Racing is not an inexpensive pass time for owners, and I have no intention of leaving the game. But how many owners are seriously considering throwing in the towel?

In previous articles that I have written to Sporting Post, I highlighted problems within the industry, writes Leonard Bloch in the Sporting Post Mailbag.

It was only because of Sporting Post that some answers were given.

My last series of questions actually got Vee Moodley to respond.

As previously mentioned, horse racing is my passion and about 2 years back, I had 7 in training.

I believe at that stage I saw the “writing on the wall” and reduced my string to 1 only in training due to GROSS MISMANAGEMENT at the top.

I have also purchased a two year old who, under current circumstances, may never run or run as an old lady so now have 2 in training.

The reason for this letter…

Racing is not an inexpensive pass time for owners, and I have no intention of leaving the game, but how many owners are seriously considering throwing in the towel?

It would be very interesting if all trainers submitted stats as to how many current owners are seriously considering ‘getting out’ and how many owners have reduced their racing strings as well as how many owners are just not paying their monthly bills.

We face a quartet of threats to our industry.

  • A government that do not know whether they are Arthur or Martha.
  • Closed totes, the main source racing revenue.
  • Heavily reduced stakes.
  • The possibility of many horses being taken out of training.

Time for some honesty to help protect the little that is left of my 50 year passion.
