Some Good Punting

Singapore on Sunday 29 November

While the season starts to wind down, there looks some nice punting races on Sunday and it will pay to be paying attention especially late in the 11 race card.

Case in point is CLUTHA LAD who ran a super race with excuses last Sunday at very long odds.

He was in a suitable race on that occasion so improvement was expected and with Manny Nunes replacing an apprentice and that good run under his belt, he should go very close in the last and still might be value.

A good Novice field will head to the starter in race 8 and the betting should be furious with at least four serious winning hopes.

Not much separates the likes of SUN PIONEER, CONFLIGHT, FINE CHOICE and UNSURPASSED and we can expect a very busy finish.

frontad-singapore-airlines-cup_140x120FINE CHOICE just missed last start in a similar affair and with Manny Nunes going on the stable mate UNSURPASSED, the 3YO might be value and the 4kg CK Ng claim might be a masterstroke.

The best race on the card is the ninth – a BM83 over the mile – and MIGTY WARRIOR looks hardest to beat for trainer Michael Freedman with gate 1 a factor.

Race 8

Selections; 8 FINE CHOICE – 1 SUN PIONEER – 7 CONFLIGHT – 9 UNSURPASSED
Like a few of these Novice events there looks four or so horses that all can win on strong recent form and six or so horses with no hope whatsoever. Unfortunately splitting the four horses that can win – SUN PIONEER, CONFLIGHT, FINE CHOICE and UNSURPASSED – looks a very tough ask. In fact each time you look at the race you find a different winner but as it stands happy to stick with FINE CHOICE who may even be the value pick as well. His form is very good but with his trainer, Mark Walker, sticking with an apprentice and Nunes on the stablemate, he may drift in the betting. Nunes is on UNSURPASSED and he also gets blinkers so he will get some support. SUN PIONEER has to give them all weight but is smart when the gets things right and has to respected first up while CONFLIGHT may even start favourite on winning form but it was a weak race so play with care.

1 SUN PIONEER *** Resuming after missing the start and just missing the win in Class 4 and must be respected. 4.00
2 SATELLITE SPEED * Former Kiwi who may need the run. 50
3 TENMA * Disappointing with support last start and may want easier than this. 50
4 SATCHMO ** Excuses not to finish closer last start but still like to see in easier company. 100
5 ALWAYS AHEAD * No. 200
6 DASHING * Will improve with racing but not for me. 200
7 CONFLIGHT *** Won a very weak one last start but form pro suggest he is up to a race like this and pay to follow. 2.50
8 FINE CHOICE *** Just missed last start similar affair and looks the hardest to beat here. 4.00
9 UNSURPASSED *** Gets blinkers after two sighters in Singapore and will have admirers with Nunes up. 3.00
10 DE WANTED * No. 200

Race 9

Selections; 5 MIGHTY WARRIOR – 1 BEST TOTHELIGN – 9 POWER PLAY – 4 IDEAL GUIDE
A few unknowns in this BM83 mile makes it one of the more interesting races on the day and the tote may give us a terrific guide. In saying that, MIGHTY WARRIOR probably starts favourite given his terrific form but this is his first start on the Polytrack. The 4YO has trialed good enough on the surface to think it won’t be an issue and gate 1 suggest he gets every chance. In contrast, BEST TOTHELIGN loves the Poly but is having his first start over the mile. His race record is also too good to ignore and he should figure heavily with a CC Wong 2kg claim a factor. POWER PLAY on the Poly (and on form) is also a huge winning show while IDEAL GUIDE has to be considered. WAR TIME looks back in form so keep very safe.

1 BEST TOTHELIGN *** Trying the mile for the first time but loves the Poly and should go well. 5.00
2 GOLIATH ** Supported and excuses last Sunday so pay to keep safe on his favourite surface. 8.00
3 EMPRESS WU * Have to take on trust on what we saw last start. 33
4 IDEAL GUIDE *** Not seen often on the Poly but handles the surface and recent form suggest he goes close. 4.00
5 MIGHTY WARRIOR *** First time on the Poly at the races but just going too well not to be the one to beat. 3.00
6 NANDOWRA * Does enjoy the Poly but exotics best in this field. 33
7 WAR TIME *** Just missed at long odds last start and have to respect on best form. 10
8 HIGH BLADE * Gets tongue-tie but needs to show more. 100
9 POWER PLAY *** Blinkers off and just goes too well on this surface not to be a huge show. 6.00
10 FUJIN BRIGHT ** Recent form looks hopeless but could improve lengths back on the Poly in this company. 20

Race 10

Selections; 5 PERFECT CHALLENGER – 2 Q NINE MAXIM – 9 KNOW EACH OTHER – 1 MUSCLE BEACH
Once again on this weekend we have a race with too many “nonnies” – i.e. horses that should win more often – to be confident. Connections of PERFECT CHALLENGER may argue that point given the 5YO has won four from 38 starts but his form and perhaps racing style has him listed as “disappointing” more often than not. But the Poly mile looks ideal and happy to give him another chance. Q NINE MAXIM has won once from five starts so he can’t be labeled a non-winner just yet and is certainly better than what he showed last start. KNOW EACH OTHER is a dead-set nonnie and Pat Shaw will be scratching his head to find out how to get him over the line given his solid form and MUSCLE BEACH – who is yet to win in Singapore – is also a show sans blinkers.

1 MUSCLE BEACH *** Blinkers off as the stable tries to turn some good form into a result. 4.00
2 Q NINE MAXIM *** May pay to put a line through his last start as he enjoys the Poly and should be up to this company. 6.00
3 BLADEMEISTER ** Looked to be improving before showing little last start but with keeping an eye on the tote with Nunes up. 12
4 DRAGON * Goes OK on his day but Poly form an issue. 20
5 PERFECT CHALLENGER *** Desperate for a result but the Poly mile looks ideal and worth thought. 6.00
6 THANKFULNESS ** Tries the mile as form starts to taper and pay to keep safe. 33
7 THEBUZZDOWNUNDER ** Struggling of late but the type that can pop up when right. 20
8 DASHING JACK * No. 100
9 KNOW EACH OTHER *** Always a show but refuses to win. 5.00
10 GOLDEN PASTURE * Gives every indication he needs easier. 33
11 GALAXY EXPRESS * Eligible for easier an better over longer but will be working into this late. 33

Race 11

Selections; 2 CLUTHA LAD – 7 BRING MONEY HOME – 3 SUPER JOE – 9 SKY ELEVEN
The Singapore Turf Club has made it tough for punters who are trying to get out of gaol in the last with a tricky BM67 Poly mile. So tricky in fact that most look to have some claims and nothing jumps off the page to win. As such we might stick with CLUTHA LAD who we specked at very long odds last Sunday. He may have been a good thing beaten on that occasion and with Nunes replacing apprentice CC Wong, he should get every chance. There are three last start winners in the race and while all will find this company tougher, BRING MONEY HOME had been in excellent form prior to that Class 4 win and happy to follow him in this field. SKY ELEVEN led throughout when winning and he might try a similar tactic here. SUPER JOE will find this easier than some recent outings and this type of race does look his caper so he could win without surprising. Taxi!

1 FATKID * Appreciates first-up run but hard to have on form. 50
2 CLUTHA LAD *** Excuses not to win at very long odds last start and goes close with senior hoop. 6.00
3 SUPER JOE ** Appreciates company and Poly but wide gate can test. 8.00
4 HOT GOLD ** Yet to win past 1400m but often competitive. 12
5 SEED OF SPEED ** Needs to lift on recent form but another capable on his day. 20
6 EAGLE STORM ** Looked to have issues last start so may pay to ignore as usually honest. 20
7 BRING MONEY HOME *** This is tougher but in terrific form and has to be respected. 4.00
8 TIP OF BORNEO ** Will be prominent throughout and may look the winner in the straight. 8.00
9 SKY ELEVEN ** Led all the way to win in Class 4 last start and another to keep safe. 10
10 FELAROF ** Recent wins have been in easier company but does get the ace. 12
11 NATION THEATRE ** Draw a concern but keeps a few honest at odds. 20

The Inspiring Story Of Dr Marianne Thomson

‘I am writing this as an older, small breeder and in our language, Markus, because this is our war. If I phoned you, I’d be overwhelmed by business jargon within a minute. What makes you so angry that you don’t care what you are doing to our shaky industry? How do you deal with this in your inner, quiet self?’
