Soccer: PSL Cup

Ajax Cape Town v Maritzburg United - Orlando Pirates v Golden Arrows

Ajax Cape Town v Maritzburg United – Saturday 21st May – Cape Town Stadium (15:00)

The PSL title has come down to the last round of matches with Ajax Cape Town and Orlando Pirates just 2 points off each other and even Kaizer Chiefs still in it as they lie just 3 points behind Ajax. League leaders Ajax will host 12th placed Maritzburg United who have steered themselves away from the relegation fight after picking up some good wins in their last few matches including a 3-1 win over Sundowns in their most recent match.

Ajax were lucky to remain favourites for the PSL title after been handed a 4-0 thrashing by Kaizer Chiefs as Orlando Pirates failed to capitalise on Ajax’s loss by drawing 1-1 with Santos. That was Ajax’s biggest loss of the season and they will be determined to bounce back by grabbing a convincing victory in Cape Town where they have lost only 1 game all season. Granwald Scott was sorely missed against Chiefs and his absence is a worry for Coach Foppe de Haan in this important match. A draw won’t be enough for Ajax because a win for Pirates will most probably put them above Ajax on goal difference. Ajax’s own little Messi, Thulani Serero who has been magical at times for Ajax this season, will be looked at to inspire his team in this match.

Ajax Cape Town are tipped to get the 3 points and lift the title when the curtain comes down on the most scintillating season in PSL history.

Orlando Pirates v Golden Arrows – Saturday 21st May – Orlando Stadium

Pirates host Golden Arrows in their final league match. They can win the league only if they beat the Durban team, and if Ajax Cape Town lose to Maritzburg.

Pirates were having a good season until they threw their lead at the top of the table away to Ajax after leading for 8 weeks. It could be too little too late now as they must rely on the Urban Warriors dropping points at home. Bucs proved their fighting spirit and quality in their last league match by coming back to draw 1-1 with Santos. They clearly dominated and were denied goals from the Santos goalkeeper who was in excellent form. Golden Arrows have been poor on the road managing to win only 3 of their 14 away matches this season.

Pirates won the first round away match 2-0 and are tipped to get all 3 points again in this fixture.
