Perfect P looks good in race 9

Perfect P looks good in race 9

The Year of the Monkey is upon us and trainer Pat Shaw for one will be hoping his good fortune continues on from the start of the calendar New Year.

In fact Shaw has had a terrific few months that included another Singapore Gold Cup with COOPTADO and of course the New Year Cup – a race he has made his own – with PERFECT P.

Both these horses will have a big say in today’s feature – The Fortune Bowl over 2000m – but remarkably they have another four stable-mates to battle against with Shaw having an incredible six runners in the 10 horse field.

frontad-singapore-airlines-cup_140x120And when you consider that the 2014 Gold Cup and 2016 Derby winner in QUECHUA is one of those four and the consistent EMPEROR’S BANQUET another, Shaw could easily have not only the first three across the line but the first six!
His other two runners are MAJESTIC MOMENTS and POWER PLAY – both last start winners – and with a trainers strike rate of 23.40% in 2016, Shaw is the trainer to follow.

Gong Xi Fa Cai and good luck!

Race 5

Selections; 1 WINNING CAUSE – 3 BRING MONEY HOME – 6 WELL DONE – 2 GOLDEN CURL
A KSC without a great deal of depth. WINNING CAUSE is very consistent and in good form. He is up to the grade, likes this distance and will be hard to hold out. BRING MONEY HOME is also in good form and just missed in this class last start; he is awkwardly drawn but goes best when ridden forward. The blinkers come off WELL DONE who ran on well last start and is suited this distance and M Nunes should have him closing late. They look better than the rest but GOLDEN CURL gets a claim, has won at the distance and rarely runs a bad race, POLE PARADISE is a similar honest one, IDYLLIC SCENERY likes the distance and whilst it may be a bit short, KAI POWER could be motoring home late.

1 WINNING CAUSE *** In spanking form. Likes this distance and will be hard to hold out. 3.30
2 GOLDEN CURL ** Rarely runs a bad race and has won at the distance. Claim helps, 7.00
3 BRING MONEY HOME *** In good form and just missed in this class last start. Awkwardly drawn but goes best when ridden forward. 4.00
4 IDYLLIC SCENERY ** Races well at this distance but may want easier. 12
5 KAI POWER ** Blinkers to winkers. Runs on but better over longer in Class 4. 16
6 WELL DONE *** Blinkers off. Ran on well last start and is suited this distance. Runs on and should be closing late. 4.00
7 POLE PARADISE ** Rarely runs a bad race but better in Class 4. 12
8 AIR FORCE ONE * Pacifiers off. Well back at Singapore debut. Tested. 33
9 BOB * Suited this distance but wants easier. 25
10 SILENT ARROW * Resuming and tested in this Grade. 33
11 VERGLATICA * Can find easier and only wins have been on poly. 50

.

Race 6

Selections; 1 STIRLING – 3 FAST EDITION – 6 KING OF THIEVES – 8 WHITE COFFEE
An open KSD affair over 1200m. STIRLING has been struggling to win in Class 4 on the poly but he is down in grade, has won on turf and has Manoel Nunes. Yes, he has drawn wide but he really should win races like this. FAST EDITION is resuming, he has had a quiet trial and is suited this class and distance; he could show up fresh – watch the market. KING OF THIEVES may be value, he won a Maiden on turf two starts back and whilst this is harder he should get a good run throughout. WHITE COFFEE is a veteran suited in this grade who ran on well before hitting a dead-end last start; he handles turf and has won four times at this trip so could show up. SOON YI is suited this class and distance, has won on turf and is usually thereabouts.

1 STIRLING *** Has been struggling to win in Class 4 on poly. Down in grade and has won on turf but gate no help. 5.00
2 MY REACH * Has battled in this Grade since Maiden poly win. Having first turf outing. 16
3 FAST EDITION *** Resuming. Suited this class and distance. Had a quiet trial and could show up fresh. Watch market. 5.00
4 MAPLE STAR * Has been struggling on poly. 16
5 SAVAGE STORM ** Very consistent at this level on poly but yet to win on turf. Will be handy throughout. 16
6 KING OF THIEVES ** Won Maiden on turf two starts back. This is harder but should get a good run throughout. 8.00
7 SOON YI ** Suited this class and distance. Is usually thereabouts and has won on turf but best form is on poly. 8.00
8 WHITE COFFEE ** Veteran suited in this grade who ran on well before hitting a dead-end last start. Handles turf and has won four times at this trip. Could show up. 6.00
9 NATURAL NICE * Hasn’t won for a long time. Take on trust. 16
10 SEASONS ECHO * Resuming and better over longer. 25
11 KAISER BRIGHT * Recent form poor. Prefers this surface but improvement required. 16
12 TIME AFTER TIME ** Racing very well in weaker company on poly. Keep safe. 14
13 LUCKY COMMAND ** Maiden who placed this distance three starts back. Can find easier. 33
14 GALLANT HEIGHTS * Wants Class 5 and longer. 33
15 GOOD LOOUKEN * Tested. 50

Race 7

Selections; 5 NINETYSEVEN GOLD – 11 WHITE HUNTER – 1 LIM’S RALLY – 6 DIVIDED HOUSE
A Class 3 over 1200m and hard to go pass NINETEYSEVEN GOLD who is in top form and won in this grade last start. The 4YO carries the same weight and with Harry Kassim staying aboard, will be hard to beat again. WHITE HUNTER is the interesting runner, he won a Class 4 last start and is a progressive sort who won at Sandown and placed in good company in Victoria; with Corey Brown up he should race well. Steven Burridge has a good hand with three runners, LIM’S RALLY has been very consistent and should get a good run throughout; LIM’S SHOWCASE disappointed last start but could make amends and GOLD PEREGRINE is resuming after a good trial and showing form last preparation. RED DAWN also goes well fresh and trialled well recently. DIVIDED HOUSE is very consistent but finds it hard to win; she will be running on late. In a strong race FORTUNE WINNER, ROYAL FORTUNE and LUCKY GIANT could show up.

1 LIM’S RALLY *** Blinkers on. Has been consistent and recent trial was solid. May prefer 1400m but should get a good run throughout. 5.00
2 LIM’S SHOWCASE ** Pacifiers off. Disappointed last start after good poly win. Can improve. 8.00
3 RED DAWN ** Resuming. Recent trials have been solid and can race well fresh. Watch market. 12
4 GOLD PEREGRINE ** Resuming. Was racing well in good company last preparation. Recent trials have been moderate. Watch market. 14
5 NINETYSEVEN GOLD *** In top form and won in this grade last start. Carries the same weight and will be hard to beat again. 4.00
6 DIVIDED HOUSE *** Very consistent but finds it hard to win. Will be running on late. 10
7 ROYAL FORTUNE ** Returned not striding out freely last start. Previous form strong and could show up. 12
8 FORTUNE WINNER ** Resuming with nice trial under his belt. Will be running on. 12
9 TAFFETAS * Form poor but may prefer being back on turf. 50
10 LUCKY GIANT ** Failed on poly when resuming but was in top form on turf before spelling. Watch for support. 12
11 WHITE HUNTER *** Won Class 4 last start. Progressive sort who won at Sandown and placed in good company in Victoria. Should race well. 5.00

.

Race 8

Selections; 2 ADRENALINE – 12 GREENBACK – 11 WINNING SUCCESS – 9 PEREGRINE FALCON
While we have ADRENALINE on top in this weak Class 5 mile, a few lightweights might be better betting options in a race that should provide a surprise or two. But it does look perfect for ADRENALINE and the 5YO will be hard to beat. He has had excuses of late not to be in the winning mix in similar affairs and Nunes stays on to make amends for some of those runs. Now the value. GREENBACK is rated just 22 and it doesn’t get any lower than that. But the trainer has thrown blinkers on for the first time and his recent trial with headgear suggests he improves lengths. Likewise the grey veteran WINNING SUCCESS comes off a nice trial and expect a very forward race with Zaki up from gate 2. Others to include are RON, PINYIN and PEREGRINE FALCON.

1 PERFECTLY ECLIPSE * No. 100
2 ADRENALINE *** Wins one of these turf races sooner than later with winkers to visor. 3.00
3 GREAT LIGHT * Headgear off but form too poor to consider. 100
4 HAPPY CAT ** Improved effort when leading last start and might pay to keep safe. 12
5 RON *** More honest than most here and will be hard to run down. 5.00
6 PINYIN *** Turned around some poor form to just miss last start and has to be respected on that effort. 12
7 STREET CHAMP * This race is weak but struggles on the turf as a rule. 20
8 JACKPOT ** Recent form ordinary but should be running on late. 12
9 PEREGRINE FALCON *** In good enough form to be a winning show in this field. 5.00
10 SECONDWAVE ** Nothing since maiden win but should be running on. 20
11 WINNING SUCCESS *** Backed up solid placing with a good trial and can run a very cheeky race. 8.00
12 GREENBACK *** Form just fair but gets blinkers and recent trial with headgear suggests he improves lengths at odds. 15

Race 9

Selections; 4 PERFECT P – 1 QUECHUA – 2 COOPTADO – 6 EMPEROR’S BANQUET
I think it’s fair to say that Pat Shaw will be a busy boy around 5pm on Tuesday afternoon. The master trainer saddles six of 10 runners in the Fortune Bowl and what is even more remarkable; none of his fleet are just making up the numbers. From the top Shaw has a Gold Cup and Derby winner in QUECHUA, the current Gold Cup winner in COOPTADO, the New Year Cup winner in PERFECT P, Gold Cup placed EMPEROR’S BANQUET and two last start winners in MAJESTIC MOMENTS and POWER PLAY. Of the Shaw runners, PERFECT P is just going too well not to be the top pick and stable hoop B Vorster on-board suggests Pat may think the same. In saying that C Brown is the regular rider of QUECHUA and he looks well placed with 58kg to win and COOPTADO has J Powell from gate 1 and cannot be discounted.

1 QUECHUA *** Won the Derby last time he raced over this trip and too honest not to be a big show here. 4.00
2 COOPTADO *** Gold Cup winner who will get all the favours from gate 1. 4.00
3 BLUE DANUBE ** Freshened after solid Gold Cup campaign that included a win over 2000m. Each-way. 20
4 PERFECT P *** Very smart stayer who won the New Year Cup too well not to be the one to beat here. 2.50
5 ORDER OF THE SUN ** Racing and trialing well and will give them something to catch. 12
6 EMPEROR’S BANQUET ** Nothing last start but appreciates being back on the turf with blinkers back off. Value. 20
7 MARTIN * Not at his best of late. 50
8 MAJESTIC MOMENTS ** Super honest and more than competitive at this level with a lightweight. 8.00
9 POWER PLAY ** Tested this level but another pat Shaw last start winner who has to be respected. 20
10 SQUIRE OSBALDESTON * A big ask at the race conditions at this level. 50

.

Race 10

Selections; 2 KATAGAS – 4 KISS ME – 13 DYNASTY KNIGHT – 5 SCIENCE FICTION
On a week where most races have depth, this KSD sprint might be a good one for punters with only a few genuine chances. In fact KATAGAS looks a stand-out given he won two starts back when breaking his maiden status in Class 4 and backed up that run with a very good effort in a Novice event. He has trialled well since and from gate 4 with Rodd retaining the ride; he is the one to beat. Question marks over most others with winning hopes including KISS ME who is always a chance but rarely wins and SCIENCE FICTION and BRANKSOME who both come off shockers but were in form prior. The value chance is DYNASTY KNIGHT who gets back on the turf with a nice recent trial under his belt.

1 COLONEL LINCOLN ** Gets blinkers and enough excuses last start to keep safe in this company. 20
2 KATAGAS *** Broke maiden status in Class 4 two starts back and looks well placed here to win again. 2.20
3 MIGHTY MAN ** Can mix his form but the type to include somewhere on best form. 12
4 KISS ME *** Always some hope and always each-way value. 8.00
5 SCIENCE FICTION ** Very disappointing last start but will work into this late on previous good form. 8.00
6 BRANKSOME ** Also coming off a shocker but previous form in Class 5 was worth following. 20
7 PO’DE OURO ** Mixes his form but maiden win was this trip/track so should show something. 20
8 LEADERSHIP ** Honest and a must for exotics in this company. 10
9 PUZZLE * Resuming after long break but has had numerous trials. Market best guide. 50
10 GOLD STOCK * Took Class 5 to win and may be better suited there. 20
11 MASTER BANGER ** Supported when improving to win well in Class 5 last start and pay to keep safe. 12
12 DOUBLE CASH ** Best form is over shorter on the Poly but in form and could add value to exotics. 20
13 DYNASTY KNIGHT *** Coming off a couple of shockers but recent trial was nice enough to follow with switch to turf in his favour. 20
14 D’DON * Reassess Class 5 over 1000m. 100

.

Race 11

Selections; 1 INTENSE GOLD – 2 ABOVE THE SKYLINE – 3 LIM’S AFFECTION – 5 LAKE HUKA
A virtual toss up between a few in this Class 4 1400m event and it may pay to see whom they support on the day. INTENSE GOLD is a handy enough type that ticks a few boxes here given he finds himself in the right company, has a run under his belt and gets blinkers. Add J Powell over what looks his best trip and he wins sooner than later. ABOVE THE SKYLINE has hit a very good patch on form and with a CC Wong 2kg claim, he is right in this. LIM’S AFFECTION resumed after a bleeding attack with a win over this trip and grade so picks himself. Throw in LAKE HUKA who while a query at the trip, very much appreciates the good gate after jumping from the car park at recent runs. HIGHER SOUL and KEVIN ELEVEN some good vale options down the weights.

1 INTENSE GOLD *** Appreciates first-up run and gets upgrade to blinkers. Goes close. 4.50
2 ABOVE THE SKYLINE *** In form and will win again in this type of race. 4.00
3 LIM’S AFFECTION *** Resumed with a good win and subsequent quiet trial suggests he can be followed. 6.00
4 BACH’S AIR ** Looked to have every chance last start but goes good enough on his day to keep safe. 8.00
5 LAKE HUKA *** Form better than it reads and very much appreciates the good gate. 6.00
6 METEORBOUND * Gets blinkers and tongue-tie after poor debut and prefer to just watch. 33
7 SPLENDOR ** Singapore debut only fair but trials well and should improve. 20
8 WAR LORD * Resuming after a poor run of form. 50
9 HAMMER DOWN ** Form looks hopeless but enjoys the turf and will be value. 33
10 HIGHER SOUL *** Ignore last start where he had plenty of excuses and will be doing best work late. 20
11 KEVIN ELEVEN *** Another that appreciates being back on the turf and always a hope. 12
12 MIGHTY KENNY ** Improved effort last start over 1400m and could include in exotics. 12
13 READY FORTUNE * Reassess easier and longer. 50

The Inspiring Story Of Dr Marianne Thomson

‘I am writing this as an older, small breeder and in our language, Markus, because this is our war. If I phoned you, I’d be overwhelmed by business jargon within a minute. What makes you so angry that you don’t care what you are doing to our shaky industry? How do you deal with this in your inner, quiet self?’
