Singapore Racing – Sunday

Sunday May 4

Cash Advance wins at Singapore 04-04-14

Cash Advance (John Powell) makes a winning comeback on Friday night

Some nice racing from Singapore on Sunday and while it would be hard act to follow the spectacle that saw three Group races run and won last week, the meeting finishes with some good punting races. Those happy to take the likely short price on offer for CASH ADVANCE in race 11 shouldn’t be disappointed. The Ad Valorem 3YO won well on debut in August last year before finding the talented ITALIAN JOB just a tad too good in a Novice Poly sprint. A timely spell saw a refreshed CASH ADVANCE win well in this company at just his third start and although carrying and extra 1.5kg and again jumping from a wide gate, he will be hard to beat. As will VECTIS in the last. The English-bred gelding might have taken six starts to break his Singapore maiden status two starts back but given what he showed in what looked a very good Class 3 field at his subsequent run, he is one to follow. Trainer Steven Burridge has placed his faith in R Rueven and his 3kg claim could be a smart move if the apprentice gets any sort of run from the widest alley.

Race 8

Selections; 1 WHAT NOW – 5 MATTERHORN – 8 TOTALITY – 2 SUPERNOVA
Truth be told, you could make a good case for most of these with the exception of TENZING and with a deluge on the day, even he could figure late fresh. WHAT NOW heads the ratings and with his six career wins all over 1400m, it’s safe to assume he likes the trip. And while the 6YO hasn’t won since late 2012, that was at Group level and he does find himself in a suitable race with a handy claim so he should feature very prominently. Likewise, MATTERHORN will also enjoy the company and from gate one you can expect him to race handy and he certainly has the class to win. His stable-mate, HOLY WARRIOR, also has to be considered but the race has depth so horses like TOTALITY with just 50kg, SUPERNOVA backing-up after a great run last Sunday and BALE STAR all should figure somewhere in what will be a terrific race.

1 WHAT NOW *** Appreciates first-up run with excuses and goes mighty close this company. 6.00
2 SUPERNOVA *** Excuses not to win last weekend and looks a serious chance to break turf duck. 4.00
3 SIR LOVESALOT ** Pulled up lame last stat so pay to forgive and take on good form prior. 7.00
4 TENZING * Resuming after good Gold Cup campaign but needs longer than this. 20
5 MATTERHORN *** Went close similar affair last start and in this a very long way. 6.00
6 HOLY WARRIOR *** Always in the mix and plays a part in this finish. 5.00
7 BALE STAR *** Excuses last start (respiratory) and recent trial suggests he can show his best sans blinkers. 8.00
8 TOTALITY *** Supported and just missed out last start and have consider with just 50kg. 6.00
9 NATURE IS NATURE ** Appreciates two runs back and could figure in skinny end of exotics. 33

.

Race 9

Selections; 8 GYPSY STAR – 5 PRINCESS JANNA – 4 POWER ANGEL – 6 AFTERNOON DELIGHT
As you would expect, not a lot to get excited about the runners in this Class 5 division 2 and no more than a few with winning hopes. PRINCESS JANNA and GYPSY STAR should dominate the betting and it may even be a toss up between the two. GYPSY STAR was disappointing last start over the mile but worth noting his three runs prior were good and the switch back to his recent winning surface is in his favour. He won super on that occasion and he will be the one growing wings late. PRINCESS JANNA is resuming but her form prior to a short spell was easily good enough for this although her two career wins have been on the Poly. That might not be an issue given the ordinary field. Hard to make a case elsewhere but POWER ANGEL and AFTERNOON DELIGHT go OK when right and pay to keep one eye on the tote.

1 ABYSS ** Blinkers back on as he drops back in trip. Take on best form. 8.00
2 ALWAYS A WINNER ** Suited this company and could be value. 20
3 BALLET DANCER * Resuming sans blinkers and hasn’t shown enough to concern. 20
4 POWER ANGEL ** Thereabouts as a rule but query this surface. 6.00
5 PRINCESS JANNA *** Resuming and in-form and more than handles the switch back to the turf. Big show. 3.00
6 AFTERNOON DELIGHT ** Blinkers back on and might be the closer at odds. 20
7 ANY CHOICE * Back in trip but hard to have on form. 33
8 GYPSY STAR *** Won similar affair four starts back and looks a leading show in this with best work expected late. 4.00
9 LADY POWER ** Form better than it reads and worth a look at value. 16
10 FABERGE ** Blinkers back off and another that could place at odds. 12
11 GOOD DAY ** In the mix on his day and will be working into this late. 12
12 LUCKY BANKER * Long time between drinks. 50
13 SARAWI ** Two recent runs this trip OK so keep safe if he gets a run. 20
14 LIVE WELL ** Tongue-tie on. Showed a bit last start with blinkers and could run a cheeky race. 20

Race 10

Selections; 8 CAPTIVATE – 9 PERFECT CHALLENGER – 4 INDICIO – 2 TERMINATOR
Class 3 races usually have depth but this 1400m is bordering on ridiculous with most having winning chances. In fact most would appear in punters “little black books” after eyecatching runs at their previous starts (or start before) and who starts favourite will be very interesting. As it stands, CAPTIVATE was flying late at his last start and that effort has him one to be on. Kif Toh is on-board and from gate 1 the gun apprentice should have him handy and a win would not surprise. PERFECT CHALLENGER is the interesting runner given he comes into this after a two solid runs in the 3YO series over 1200m and 1400m. With no WAR AFFAIR in this field, connections might be looking at “pinching” a win before a crack at the Guineas in two weeks time. Throw a blanket over the rest with INDICIO an interesting runner given he was well and truly due and has changed stables to S Burridge and TERMINATOR might even go round at odds again.

1 LAMBORGHINI FLAME ** Needs to lead and hard to pass if he does. 20
2 TERMINATOR *** In very good form and only just pipped last start. Follow. 8.00
3 GATO NEGRO *** Smart and switch back to turf a good move. Goes close. 7.00
4 INDICIO *** Changed stables and was due. 6.00
5 MAGICAL TALENT ** Always runs a good race and a solid each-way show. 20
6 INDIAN JADE *** Winkers added after finding one better last start and must go close. 5.00
7 BAZINGA * Mixing his distances and hard to have in this good field. 100
8 CAPTIVATE *** In terrific form and eye-catching run behind Cordoba last start suggests he can win this. 5.00
9 PERFECT CHALLENGER *** Big effort to finish fourth in the 3YO Classic and must be a show on that run. 10
10 TWO M AND M ** Led them up in similar affair two back and have to respect. 12
11 EMPIRE BAY ** Will need luck from the wide alley but in this on his day. 20
12 BRILLIANT DEAL ** Hard to fault winning form but has found himself in a very strong Class 3 field. 8.00

.

Race 11

Selections; 1 CASH ADVANCE – 5 MIGHTY CREATION – 2 GREAT WISE – 6 HANKS
CASH ADVANCE is a very progressive type and no reason to think he can’t knock in his third win from just his fourth career start in this Class 4 sprint. The 3YO won well on resumption and given the only time he has lowered his colours was to the very smart ITALIAN JOB, he could be destined for better company than this. He will be short in the betting and will have to work from a wide alley, but it may be a case of “catch me if you can”. A few will keep him honest and it’s hard to fault MIGHTY CREATIONS form since blinkers/pacifiers went on. The 5YO has five Poly sprint wins to his name and certainly in this up to his ears on what he has shown at his past two starts. Of the others, GREAT WISE is an obvious choice – honest and just needs a win while in form – while HANKS is a little less obvious but worth a look at value as he had excuses last start and could be up to a race like this.

1 CASH ADVANCE *** Won extremely well when resuming and looks better than these. 1.60
2 GREAT WISE ** Wins a race like this on his day and obviously a must for exotics. 6.00
3 CHEYENNE WARRIOR ** Appreciates first-up run and should be the improver. 20
4 ANGRY CAT ** Usually in the mix and have to include somewhere. 9.00
5 MIGHTY CREATION ** Hit form since head-gear went on and will be closing late. 8.00
6 HANKS ** Excuses for poor run last time out and looks a horse worth following. 12
7 ORIENTAL PEARL * Needs easier. 33
8 ALL SERENE ** Excuses last start (respiratory) and might be worth thought at odds from the ace. 33
9 ARROW TO POST * Recent trial OK but starts can be costly race day. 33
10 PALOMBARO * Appreciates the Poly but not at his best of late. 100
11 ROUGH DANCE * Wide gate makes this tough. 50
12 DANGER MONEY * Needs easier. 50

Race 12

Selections; 1 VECTIS – 4 KATE’S KEEPER – 2 SINGLE ACT – 5 MY BOY JACK
VECTIS may have taken six starts to break his Singapore duck but the fact he backed up that win with a very good effort in what was a strong Class 3 field, he will go on with the job. Obviously back in Class 4 is in his favour and with a smart 3kg Rueven claim, VECTIS could be hard to beat. Also in his favour is that there is no stand-outs in what is an even field although KATE’S KEEPER could be ready to show his best. The Stephen Gray-trained 4YO is honest and looks suited back in Class 4 after a solid Graduation run with S Noh from gate 5 a good combination. SINGLE ACT was backed last start and had excuses so while his form is starting to read badly, he is worth another look with leading rider, M Nunes, onboard. Of the rest, MY BOY JACK, LUWAK COFFEE and SPLICE all should play a part.

1 VECTIS *** Backed up win this grade with a terrific effort in good company. Hard to beat. 2.60
2 SINGLE ACT *** Excuses last start when supported and pay to follow. 6.00
3 HAKAMGONG ** Won maiden at second start in Singapore and should be competitive. 8.00
4 KATE’S KEEPER *** Honest and looks very well placed this company with handy 3kg claim. 8.00
5 MY BOY JACK ** Always looks an each-way hope in races like this. 12
6 SPLICE ** Another in form and a solid each-way option. 6.00
7 ATELIER LIBRE * Hard to have on two runs thus far. 100
8 LUWAK COFFEE ** Better than what his his recent form suggests and will be value over his best trip. 20
9 SIR FLEETWOOD ** Honest enough to include in exotics. 20
10 PATERSON ROAD ** Had some support last start and ran OK so worth thought with one eye on the tote. 20
11 HIGHLIGHT * Might need easier than this. 33
12 KAISER BRIGHT ** Shown enough of late to include somewhere in exotics. 20
13 VITALICO * Placed last start at long odds but needs easier than this. 50

The Inspiring Story Of Dr Marianne Thomson

‘I am writing this as an older, small breeder and in our language, Markus, because this is our war. If I phoned you, I’d be overwhelmed by business jargon within a minute. What makes you so angry that you don’t care what you are doing to our shaky industry? How do you deal with this in your inner, quiet self?’
