A La Victory (Corey Brown) triumphs in Race 10 on Friday (picture Singapore Turf Club)

He may have not covered himself in glory when taking on the best 3YO’s in the Group 1 Singapore Guineas, but A LA VICTORY gets his chance back in Class 3 company and looks hard to beat in race 9.

The 1400m looks ideal with blinkers and tongue-tie added for good measure and the red-hot Corey Brown will be confident of a very strong showing given A LA VICTORY’s previous run of winning form. He will need to be at his best up against the in-from LIM’s RALLY and also ELUSIVE EMPEROR who also ran in the Guineas and is more than up to this company.

The lucky last is also over 1400m and while the field has depth, ARES looks better than Class 4 and should be hard to beat. The Irish-bred 3YO has had three good runs in Singapore and given his last start close-up placing behind the smart IMPERIAL MARCH, he can win this and looks a horse to follow.

frontad-singapore-airlines-cup_140x120As mentioned, the race has depth and it will pay to go very wide in exotics with the likes of FELAROF, MILLION ROUND, DANNY RICARDO, STORM TROOPER, BANNISTER and FIVE HUNDRED BUCKS all good enough to win if ARES is not up to the task.

Race 8

Selections; 3 GYPSY STAR – 12 BRILLIANT POWER – 2 GODS SPEED – 8 BERNARD’S FIGHTER
An extremely ordinary lot of Class 5 horses compete over 1400m where most of the field are battling Maidens. GYPSY STAR knows how to win, he will get a long way back but is suited this company and will be running on late. GOD’S SPEED has run a few reasonable races on turf and could show up. WINNING SUCCESS drops back in trip and has changed stables; whilst he has not won for a long time he could surprise. Amongst the maidens BERNARD’S FIGHTER has placed at this trip and his recent efforts have been reasonable, BRILLIANT POWER has trialed nicely but has no race form, PRINCETON was fair last start and his only placing was at this distance and the race is so weak even SUPER VELOX at start number 66 has a chance.

1 SILVER FLY ** Only win was on poly but has placed at this trip. Could show up with first-up run under his belt. 12
2 GODS SPEED *** Only wins have been on poly. Yet to place on turf in 11 starts but has put in a couple of reasonable efforts up to a mile. Could show up. 6.00
3 GYPSY STAR *** Will get a long way back but suited this company and will be running on late. 4.00
4 WORLD OF FAME * Best form is on poly over longer. 33
5 TOOBIGTOFAIL * Maiden who has been thereabouts but is yet to place in 12 starts. 25
6 OUR RIVER DANCER * Blinkers to visor. Fifteen start Maiden but will battle away. 20
7 SECONDWAVE * Long-term Maiden who has placed on turf and could show up. 20
8 BERNARD’S FIGHTER *** Has placed at this trip and recent efforts have been reasonable. Could show up in this weak field. 6.00
9 PRINCETON ** Only placing in 20 starts was at this trip. Not far away last start on the poly and could show up. 10
10 BIG BANG KING * Only placing in 17 starts was at this trip but needs to improve. 50
11 WINNING SUCCESS ** Drops back in trip. Has won eight races, three on turf and has changed stables. Could surprise. 10
12 BRILLIANT POWER *** Race form poor but trialed well lately and only win was on turf over a mile. 6.00
13 SUPER VELOX ** Having his 66th start as a maiden but may never get a better chance. 14

Race 9

Selections; 2 A LA VICTORY – 1 LIM’S RALLY – 7 ELUSIVE EMPEROR – 3 METEOR MIKE
A Class 3 over 1400m with little depth. The blinkers and tongue-tie are added to A LA VICTORY who is resuming after failing in Guineas. The 3YO goes well at this distance and will be hard to hold out. LIM’S RALLY is racing very well but Steven Burridge has elected to put the inexperienced claimer Syafiq to get some weight off his back; take on trust. The blinkers come off ELUSIVE EMPEROR, he failed last start but his previous form was solid and he should be handy throughout. BOARD WALK is resuming, he is suited this grade and recent trials indicate he could show up fresh. The depth falls away from here but PHILANTHROPIST is usually running on and may benefit from a positive ride whilst the veteran METEOR MIKE is suited at the trip and is usually thereabouts.

1 LIM’S RALLY *** Racing very well with stable opting for inexperienced 4kg claimer. Goes close. 4.00
2 A LA VICTORY *** Blinkers and tongue-tie added. Resuming after just fair Guineas run. Goes well this distance and will be hard to hold out. 3.50
3 METEOR MIKE ** Hit front but weakened last start. Usually puts in an honest effort. 10
4 PURE TACTICS * Best form is on poly. 33
5 PHILANTHROPIST ** Usually runs on but rarely threatens. Could go better with a more positive ride. 10
6 TOM * Struggling and needs to improve. 50
7 ELUSIVE EMPEROR *** Blinkers off. Only battled last start but previous form sound and should be in the finish. 4.50
8 GOLDEN MISSION * Recent form ordinary and may need easier. 25
9 BOARD WALK ** Resuming. Suited this grade and recent trials indicate he could show up fresh. 10
10 GOLD HILL * Struggled at recent outings and needs to improve. 20
11 VERTICAL START * Hasn’t won for a while and may be looking for poly and easier. 20
12 SPLICE * Up in Grade and could be tested at this level. 20

Race 10

Selections; 1 INVINCIBLE MAN – 2 DRAGON SPIRIT – 3 GREAT SUN – 7 MASTERMIND
A Class 4 of little depth on the poly over 1000m gives INVINCIBLE MAN a chance to get a result. The 3YO has been racing honestly but struggling to win so the shorter trip and the stronger rider, Harry Kasim replacing Desmond Chan, may help. GREAT SUN has been racing well in KSD company, he is not as well drawn as at his two previous starts but Corey Brown is in form and should give him every chance. DRAGON SPIRIT was caught wide last start but is better served here and should be on the pace throughout. The depth falls away after this but MASTERMIND has speed and trialed well recently. ROCK OF AGES usually runs an honest race and has the benefit of the inside gate. The disappointing SPIRIT OF SPEED and CITY OF SAILS could show up whilst SUGAR MAN will run his usual cheeky race.

1 INVINCIBLE MAN *** Racing honestly but finding it hard to win. Will give a sight once again. 3.00
2 DRAGON SPIRIT *** Wide throughout last start and will appreciate the better gate. 4.50
3 GREAT SUN *** Close up in good KSDs at past two starts. Not so well drawn in this. 4.00
4 QUEEN’S ABEJA * Japanese Maiden who was unplaced at both outings. Has shown little at trials. 50
5 SPIRIT OF SPEED * Has struggled at last few outings and needs to improve. 20
6 CITY OF SAILS * Has disappointed at last two outings and might need easier. 20
7 MASTERMIND ** Struggling to finish off races but recent trial looked good so look for improvement. 20
8 HELEN * Recent form ordinary but better suited this surface and distance. Could show up. 20
9 SUGAR MAN ** Has speed but may be more comfortable in easier. 12
10 LADY ROULETTE * Has speed but weakens. 25
11 ROCK OF AGES ** Rarely far away in KSD company on this surface. Should get a nice run throughout. 8.00
12 FUKU ICHIBAN * Best form is over longer on turf. 33
13 DELFYNE * Maiden who wants easier. 50

Race 11

Selections; 4 ARES – 3 FELAROF – 1 MILLION ROUND – 7 DANNY RICARDO
A Class 4 over 1400m and ARES gets his chance to break through. The Irish-bred 3YO has put in three good runs since arriving in Singapore, the 1400m suits and Alan Munro should have him off the speed and running home late. FELAROF is racing well since resuming after having failed over longer trips. He will keep them all honest. FIVE HUNDRED BUCKS is also racing well, he is consistent and from his wide gate Corey Brown will take him forward and he will be hard to run down. MILLION ROUND did well to score his first turf win over this trip in KSD company last start, this is harder but he continues to improve. STORM FIGHTER ran on well in Novice company last start, his previous form was consistent and he can get in the finish. LINCOLN’S EXCUSE disappointed in a strong Novice last start after a good Maiden win, he can make amends. Amongst the rest, DANNY RICARDO is always a chance in these type of races and BANNISTER will be thereabouts throughout.

1 MILLION ROUND *** Did well to score first turf win over this trip in KSD company last start. This is harder but continues to improve. 6.00
2 LINCOLN’S EXCUSE ** Disappointed in strong Novice last start after good Maiden win. Can improve. 8.00
3 FELAROF *** Has fought on well at both outings since resuming and excuses not to finish closer last start. Can win. 10
4 ARES *** Knocking on the door and should be hard to hold out in this. 4.00
5 DEAUVILLE * Needs to improve on recent efforts but M Rodd may help. 33
6 STORM TROOPER *** Ran on well in Novice company last start. Should be in the finish. 6.00
7 DANNY RICARDO *** Suited this trip and can give a sight. 12
8 WILKINSON * Has battled since surprise win four starts back. Needs to improve. 33
9 FIVE HUNDRED BUCKS *** Goes forward and will give a sight. Consistent and could be hard to run down. 6.00
10 BANNISTER *** Not far away last start and should get a good run throughout. Value. 12
11 HIGHER SOUL * Has had respiratory issues and struggled since good maiden win. Take on trust. 20
12 LION WAVE * Shown nothing since coming from NZ and needs to improve. 50
13 BARNBURGH LAD * Might be looking for easier. 33

The Inspiring Story Of Dr Marianne Thomson

‘I am writing this as an older, small breeder and in our language, Markus, because this is our war. If I phoned you, I’d be overwhelmed by business jargon within a minute. What makes you so angry that you don’t care what you are doing to our shaky industry? How do you deal with this in your inner, quiet self?’
