A few nice local races on what should be a sunny Singapore Sunday afternoon but all eyes will be on the big screen and SPALATO in Hong Kong. The unbeaten star of Singapore racing makes his international debut in the Bochk Wealth Management Jockey Club Sprint – a race ROCKET MAN dead-heated in 2010 – and SPALATO looks up to the task.

In saying that, James McDonald will have his work cut out after the champ drew the visitors gate in 13 but the Kiwi hoop has big race experience and has been in red-hot form at recent international meetings. The race starts at 3.30pm (Singapore time) and good luck to all concerned.

Of the local races on offer, the Class 3 sprint (race 8) looks a beauty with DESERT FOX back in a winnable grade and BOOMERANG DELUXE resuming after a terrific run of form. Both will get support and should race very well but it might be the former Malaysian galloper, DRAGON DYNASTY, who is hardest to beat. The 5YO arrived in Singapore with some very good form under his belt and his Kranji debut looked more of a sighter than anything else given blinkers are back on for this assignment and his recent trials suggests he improves with headgear.

Elsewhere on the card, BEST TOTHELIGN looks to have found another winnable race in the lucky last where he stays in Class 4 after a nice enough win in the same company. Trainer Shane Baertschiger has elected to take blinkers off for this Poly sprint and his record suggests he will be hard to beat with or without head-gear.

Best Bets; (DRAGON DYNASTY race 8, win), (BEST TOTHELIGN race 10, win) and (SHENZOU ONE race 9, value).
Bankers for Jackpots: Race 7 (Field), race 8 (1 and 5), race 9 (2, 3, 4, 5 and 9), race 10 (1 and 6).

Race 7

Selections; 2 BANKERS CALL – 1 AFROJACK – 4 PROSPERITY STAR – 7 TIME AFTER TIME
Another weak Class 5 over 1200m full of inconsistent performers. BANKER’S CALL is one of these and if he puts his best foot forward can get in the finish again. He gets a 4kg claimer in Ruzali and he will need to ride well after drawing a wide gate. AFROJACK is similarly unreliable, he showed a return to form last start and won back-to-back at this level not long ago; if in the mood he could be a contender. PROSPERITY STAR won at this trip two starts back and then ran well on turf; he is poorly drawn but if he gets a decent run will be amongst the main hopes. TIME AFTER TIME has shown some promise on the track but has placed only once in 11 starts. However, his recent trial was good and he could get in the mix. VICTORIOUS STREAK ran on at big odds last start, his only two placings have been on this surface and he could show up again. VOLKOV and FOUNTAIN are perennials at this level who can often get on the podium.

1 AFROJACK *** Showed a return to form last start. Won back-to-back at this level not long ago and could get in the finish again. 6.00
2 BANKERS CALL *** Broke through last start. Not the most consistent and back in trip but can get in the finish again. 6.00
3 CHI LIN ** Resuming. Placed this level last preparation and could show up. 14
4 PROSPERITY STAR *** Won this trip two starts back and then ran well on turf. Poorly drawn but should be in the finish once again. 6.00
5 STREET RUFFIAN ** Veteran who can be thereabouts. Is usually running on late. 12
6 BARGAIN BID ** Battled away on turf last start and better suited here. Should be thereabouts. 14
7 TIME AFTER TIME *** Has placed only once in 11 starts but recent trial was good and could show up. 11
8 VICTORIOUS STREAK *** Ran on at big odds last start. Only two placings have been on this surface and could show up again. 7.00
9 PEGASUS VICTORY * Recent form poor and best form is over shorter. 33
10 VOLKOV *** Disappointed last start but is rarely far away and should be on the speed throughout. 7.00
11 FOUNTAIN *** Far from reliable but suited this grade, surface and distance. Can be in the finish. 7.00
12 FANTASTIC BOY * Form poor. 50
13 REAL GOODMAN * Unreliable and recent form poor. 50

Race 8

Selections; 5 DRAGON DYNASTY – 1 DESERT FOX – 3 BOOMARANG DELUXE – 4 FLYING ZERO
A Class 3 over 1200m will suit DESERT FOX, he has found the class too strong at two runs since resuming, down in grade with blinkers on he is much better suited and should race well. But the former Malaysian DRAGON DYNASTY ran on from well back at his first start in Singapore and looks well-placed here with blinkers back on. He is having his first poly start but won a trial very well recently and should be in the finish. The horse named after a pizza, BOOMARANG DELUXE, is resuming and has won four from six on the poly; whilst he likes longer could show up fresh – watch for support. FLYING ZERO is honest and goes well this course and distance but is yet to win above BM67. JEFFERSON BAY will be running on and KAISER is better suited at the 1200m than being run off his legs like last start.

1 DESERT FOX *** Blinkers on. Has found class too much at two runs since resuming. Better suited here. 3.50
2 HARD STUFF * Hasn’t shown much for a while but down in grade and has won with Alan Munro up. 12
3 BOOMARANG DELUXE *** Resuming. Has won four from six on the poly and could show up fresh. Watch for support. 6.00
4 FLYING ZERO ** Goes well this course and distance but yet to win above Class 4. 10
5 DRAGON DYNASTY *** Ran on from well back last start. Having first poly stars but won trial very well recently. Should be in the finish with blinkers back on. 4.00
6 CHEYENNE WARRIOR * Charged home to win well last start on turf. Yet to produce on poly. 16
7 JEFFERSON BAY ** Ran on at last two outings but best form is over longer. Will be closing late. 10
8 APPRECIATION * Has been in and out at recent runs. Has ability but could be tested at this level. 16
9 KNIGHT SPIRIT * Runs on but better over longer. 20
10 CASH DOT COM * Slipping down the ratings and has not shown worthwhile form for some time. 25
11 KAISER ** Was run off his legs last start and this trip may be more suitable. Can show up with the light weight. 10

Race 9

Selections; 3 SHENZHOU ONE – 2 ENZO – 9 SUPER VELOX – 4 GRAND PARIS
Another very weak race, a Class 5 over 1900m. SHENZHOU ONE is the interesting runner after almost winning at odds last start. He did slip under the radar last start (he had been running on in races) and the effort obviously has him winning soon. He is a query this trip/ track but it’s a weak race. ENZO is on trial at the trip but he has won six races which is much better than any others in the field; if he handles the journey he is the one that can find the winning post. GRAND PARIS is at the other end of the scale (yet to win) but has battled away well at his past three outings and can be in the finish. NORTH STAR is a one-pacer who battles away, is often supported in these and is always a chance. SUPER VELOX almost broke through at start number 54 two runs back, he has placed twice at this distance from four tries and could perform the miracle in this ordinary field. Amongst the rest of the rabble, BRILLIANT POWER, DOUBLE HOCK and CHENGDU WARRIOR can get in the mix.

1 SINGING DUNE * Very dour fellow who battled on over 2200m on turf last start. Will be plodding away late. 20
2 ENZO *** Six-time winner on trial at the trip. Suited this company and knows how to win. Better gate today. Could surprise. 4.00
3 SHENZHOU ONE *** Put in a personal best last start over 1400m on turf. Finally draws a gate. Follow. 14
4 GRAND PARIS *** Has battled away well late at past three outings. Can be in the finish. 6.00
5 NORTH STAR *** One-pacer who battles away and always a chance in these. 5.00
6 BERNARD’S FIGHTER * Blinkers off but may need more than that. 20
7 BRILLIANT POWER ** Only win was over a mile on turf but placed this trip three starts back on the poly. 12
8 EXCUSEZ MOI * Only battles and needs to improve. 20
9 SUPER VELOX *** Almost broke through at start 54 two runs back. Has placed twice at this distance from four tries and should give a sight. 7.00
10 ANY CHOICE ** Battled on when resuming. Yet to place in 15 starts but this is a weak field. 14
11 CHENGDU WARRIOR ** Was placed at this trip five starts back. Doesn’t win often but can run a bold race. 12
12 DOUBLE HOCK ** Been a maiden for a long time but will be running on. 12

Race 10

Selections; 1 BEST TOTHELIGN – 6 SOON YI – 7 TOP GUN – 3 WAR LORD
One of the better races, a Class 4 over 1200m finishes things off. BEST TOTHELIGN was slowly away and raced wide but still won over this trip in this Grade last start; with the claim sans blinkers, he goes up only 0.5 kg and will be hard to beat again. SOON YI has been slowly away at his past two outings but if he gets away smoothly he can be in the finish. TOP GUN was run down at his first Singapore start since coming from Malaysia, he has speed and should give a sight if he handles the poly. WAR LORD’s best form over is 1400m on turf and is yet to win on poly, however, he is versatile and well up to this grade. SATELLITE KING won a KSD on the poly three starts back and could make his presence felt. GOOD BOSS, DRAGON NINETYNINE and MEAISIN can be mentioned in the exotics.

1 BEST TOTHELIGN *** Blinkers off. Slowly away and raced wide but still won over this trip in this Grade last start. Up 0.5 kg with claim and will be hard to beat again. 3.50
2 LITTLE JUMBO * Tongue tie off. Has struggled at past two outings and wide gate makes this tough. 16
3 WAR LORD *** Best form over 1400m on turf and whilst placed, yet to win on poly. Versatile and should show up. 7.00
4 MEAISIN *** Blinkers off. Disappointed last start on turf but went well on poly at start prior. Looked ready to show up. 10
5 SATELLITE KING ** Won KSD on poly three starts back and could make his presence felt. 10
6 SOON YI *** Has been slowly away at past two outings and work late excellent. If he gets away can be in the finish. 6.00
7 TOP GUN *** Was run down at first Singapore start since coming from Malaysia. Has speed and should give a sight if he handles the poly. 5.00
8 GOOD BOSS ** Has been racing well on turf but is equally good on poly. More a Class 5 horse but could show up. 12
9 GILT LAD * Recent form poor and needs to improve. 33
10 DRAGON NINETYNINE ** Will enjoy being back on poly and has won before in Class 4 with Dellorto on top. Keep safe. 14
11 STANZOUT * Veteran who did little when resuming but is always a chance in these. 25
12 NOBLEMAN STAR * Has had several trials recently – the last one OK – but outclassed in this. 50

The Inspiring Story Of Dr Marianne Thomson

‘I am writing this as an older, small breeder and in our language, Markus, because this is our war. If I phoned you, I’d be overwhelmed by business jargon within a minute. What makes you so angry that you don’t care what you are doing to our shaky industry? How do you deal with this in your inner, quiet self?’
