Huka Falls wins in Singapore 2014-09-12-web_compressed

A solid days racing and while no features on the eleven race card, a good old fashioned handicap sprint (race 10) will keep racegoers interested.

As most of the Weight-for-Age Sprinters will be back in the stables waiting for what should be a huge International weekend in two weeks time, HUKA FALLS gets his chance to knock in another Poly win.

The 5YO has been a marvel for the Laxon stable winning some 13 times from 33 starts and while 11 of those victories have been on the Poly, only one has been over the shortest trip in Singapore, 1000m. He also has to carry the good horses’ impost of 59kg but he did win under similar circumstances under the same hoop – Rodd – back in January so he is more than up to the challenge.

Nothing jumps off the page to beat him although in saying that the field is very even with plenty of other Poly specialists likely to challenge him throughout. SOUTHERN BOSS is one such specialist winning nine from 25 exclusively on this surface and he could show them a clean pair of heels with 2kg claimer Joseph See on-board. GOLDEN SAND STEED has won eight from 29 on the all-weather and will be the closer and PETRENUI may be the bolter on what we saw in the Lion City Cup last Sunday.

frontad-singapore-airlines-cup_140x120Incidentally, in the nine horse field only HUKA FALLS and CAVALLO have turf wins (two apiece) on their CV’s which makes this a dead-set Polytrack championship! May the best all-weather sprinter win.

Race 8

Selections; 2 RAVOUX – 9 AFFIRMATION – 4 SUGARTIME JAZZ – 6 JACKPOT
A Class 5 over 1400m is right up RAVOUX’s alley. He found the mile too far last but has been freshened by a couple of recent trials; Michael Rodd should have him handy throughout. AFFIRMATION ran on last start in higher grade, he has won seven times at this trip and can get in the finish. SUGARTIME JAZZ goes well on this surface and the distance suits; he will be running on late. The stablemate JACKPOT ran on very strongly last start and this distance suits. The depth falls away after this although AFTERNOON DELIGHT is capable of showing up and if he gets a run, XZUBERANCE can give a sight.

1 ON TWISTTER * Drops in Class but only win was on poly. Needs to improve. 33
2 RAVOUX *** Battled at a mile last start but better suited this distance. Has a has a couple of recent good trials and this Class suits. 3.50
3 GOOD BUDDY ** Trialled well recently and could improve. 20
4 SUGARTIME JAZZ *** Blinkers on. Goes well on this surface and distance suits. Will be running on late. 4.00
5 SIMPANG * Has yet to place in 16 turf outings. 33
6 JACKPOT *** Ran on strongly last start over 1200m. Suited this distance. 5.00
7 JAPPANELLA * Only win was at this trip but needs to improve on recent efforts. 33
8 AFTERNOON DELIGHT ** Has won three times at this trip but is far from reliable. Take on trust. 20
9 AFFIRMATION *** Ran on last start in higher grade. Has won seven times at this trip and can get in the finish. 4.00
10 REGAL SALUTE * Has been a maiden for a very long time. 25
11 SECONDWAVE ** Still a maiden but thereabouts as a rule. 33
12 SPARKLING STAR * Tongue-tie off. Risky at the start and gets a mile back but can run on late. 20
13 JACK OF HEARTS * Needs to improve. 33
14 XZUBERANCE ** Ran a bold race two starts back and could show up again. 12

Race 9

Selections; 3 SOUTHERN BOSS – 1 HUKA FALLS – 7 PETRENUI – 4 GOLDEN SAND STEED
An Open Handicap over 1000m on the poly with plenty of speedsters involved. SOUTHERN BOSS is resuming and he has an outstanding record at the distance and surface having won seven times at the trip. He goes well for Joseph See and his 2kg claim is a factor. HUKA FALLS has a great record on the polytrack and will find this easier than the Lion City Cup. He has a big weight but has shown previously that he is up to the task. PETRENUI went out like a scalded cat in the Lion City Cup, he will do better with only 50kg and a more controlled ride. The hot speed could help GOLDEN SAND STEED who will be the one running on late. In what is a very open race, HAPPY MONEY could show up from his good gate, VALEVOLE is honest and loves the surface and CAVALLO is always a threat in this type of race.

1 HUKA FALLS *** Will find this easier than Lion City Cup, loves the poly and can give a sight. 3.50
2 CAVALLO ** Another who enjoys the Poly and will be closing late. 16
3 SOUTHERN BOSS *** Resuming. Has won seven times at this trip and will give a bold sight. 4.00
4 GOLDEN SAND STEED ** Runs on strongly and will be the one finishing best. 6.00
5 HAPPY MONEY ** Disappointed last outing but better suited this trip. Can give a sight from the good gate. 10
6 VALEVOLE ** Goes well this trip and will appreciate 50.5kg. Value. 16
7 PETRENUI *** Went out like a scalded cat in the Lion City. Will do better with only 50kg and a more controlled ride. 3.50
8 CASH ADVANCE * Resuming after a long break following a disappointing outing. Has considerable ability but is taking on a strong field first-up. 16
9 TERMINATOR * Outclassed. 50

Race 10

Selections; 2 MIGHTY WARRIOR – 1 ALFONSO – 7 TIME ODYSSEY – 4 BREMNER
A Class 4 over a mile and MIGHTY WARRIOR is racing well and has a few less convictions than a number of others in the field. He is up in class and distance but being by Savabeel should appreciate the mile. ALFONSO is one of several in the field that regularly disappoint but this grade surface and distance should suit. He showed last start he wins again soon and he will be handy throughout. BREMNER won twice up to mile at Ayr, his two Singapore runs at 1400m have been sound and blinkers and the mile should suit. CALIFORNIAN JET is another that can easily find trouble but from the good alley he should be running on late. TIME ODYSSEY will find this easier than his last couple in top 3YO company and this distance should suit, he can get in the finish. Amongst the others, KAI POWER could improve over the shorter trip and ACROSS THE SEA with blinkers added could show up.

1 ALFONSO *** Showed last start he will win sooner than later in this company and will be prominently throughout. 6.00
2 MIGHTY WARRIOR *** Upgrade to blinkers. Racing well and should be suited by the distance. Hard to beat. 3.50
3 ROYAL DOMINANCE * Ellerslie 1400m maiden winner who has shown nothing so far. Needs to improve. 20
4 BREMNER *** Blinkers on. Won twice at Ayr up to a mile and not far away at both Singapore outings over 1400m. Big show. 6.00
5 KAI POWER ** Blinkers off. Excuses last start and did look due for a result previously. Keep safe. 10
6 CALIFORNIAN JET ** Caught wide last start and never likely. Runs on and can be thereabouts. 8.00
7 TIME ODYSSEY *** Will find this easier than last couple and this distance should suit. Can get in the finish. 8.00
8 ACROSS THE SEA ** Blinkers on. Last two efforts have been ordinary but recent blinker trial was good. Could show up. 10
9 GINSENG ** Blinkers on. Only win was at a mile but needs to improve on recent efforts. 16
10 GREAT LIGHT * Not a mile away of late but might need easier. 25
11 SECRET SPICE ** Boxed on well on Novice over 1400m last start but only win was on poly. 20
12 MAL’S DAD * Needs to improve on recent efforts. 33

Race 11

Selections; 4 SECRET LIBERTY – 5 ROYAL FINISH – 7 DIVIDED HOUSE – 1 CONVICT
A Class 4 over 1200m without a great deal of depth. SECRET LIBERTY drops in grade and the 4kg claim for Syafiq will help: he has plenty of speed and will be prominent throughout so should be suited the course. The former Queenslander ROYAL FINISH improved last start and can get in the finish with an upgrade of winkers to blinkers and Michael Rodd staying on-board. DIVIDED HOUSE scored well in Initiation company and can be followed on the strength of that win although this is obviously harder. CONVICT will have benefited from two recent outings, the 3kg claim for Dellorto will help and he is suited this class, surface and distance. The depth falls away after this but possibly XAVIO could show up and if the emergency DANNY RICARDO gets a run, he could give a bold sight.

1 CONVICT *** Will have benefited from two recent outings. Suited this class, surface and distance. Claim will help. 5.00
2 MEGATHINK * Wyong maiden winner who did nothing at debut but will find this easier. 33
3 COOL CAT * Should go better in Class 4 but recent form is poor. 25
4 SECRET LIBERTY *** Drops in grade and 4kg claim will help. Has plenty of speed and will be prominent throughout. 3.50
5 ROYAL FINISH *** Improved last start and can get in the finish with upgrade of winkers to blinkers. 4.00
6 XIN TREASURE * Battles away but is better on poly. 16
7 DIVIDED HOUSE *** Scored well in Initiation company and pay to follow. 6.00
8 XAVIO * Only wins have been at 1400m. Placed two starts back but may want easier. 10
9 ROCK OF AGES * Honest and worth including in exotics but should need easier to win. 16
10 SMART SUPREME * Best form is on poly over shorter. 20
11 NAOMI * Tested here. 33
12 OASIS SPUR * Wants easier. 50
13 DANNY RICARDO *** Will enjoy being back on turf and can give a bold sight. 6.00
14 GOLD LINE ** Resuming. Recent trials only fair. Watch market. 12

The Inspiring Story Of Dr Marianne Thomson

‘I am writing this as an older, small breeder and in our language, Markus, because this is our war. If I phoned you, I’d be overwhelmed by business jargon within a minute. What makes you so angry that you don’t care what you are doing to our shaky industry? How do you deal with this in your inner, quiet self?’
