Singapore Racing – Sunday

Sunday 17 August

Bogart

Bogart (Manoel Nunes) starts to draw clear from his rivals in Race 5 on Friday, 09 August 2013

A tough card to find winners but on the the plus side that usually equates to value for canny punters. Case in point is race 9 on the 11 race card, a Benchmark 83 over 1400m. Most runners look to be in the mix with last start winner, BOGART, the most obvious choice.

The 4YO knocked in his fourth career win (and second over this trip) in what looked a good Class 3 field at his last start and more than capable of continue his winning run. However, there are a few stayers fresh enough to think they will be storming home and can figure heavily at the business end. The Mark Walker pair of SMILESWITHHISEYES and REIDEL both appreciate what looked solid first-up runs over 1200m and both look horses to follow in what should be similar campaigns.

But the stayer that can win first up over 1400m – hopefully at a price – is LORD BROMPTON. The 6YO won a very similar affair first-up this time last year and given four of his five subsequent runs were in group company, there is no reason he can’t start this campaign off with a bang as well.

Race 8

Selections; 1 EXCEPTIONAL CHOICE – 8 DOUBLE HOCK – 6 JOHNNY HATES JAZZ – 9 SUPER VELOX
A very average Class 5 mile – so much so a maiden having his 50th career start could even jump favourite. The horse in question is SUPER VELOX and with Juglall placing on the 6YO last start, he could go two better in what looks a very weak field. But at the top of the ratings (on a lofty 31), another maiden in EXCEPTIONAL CHOICE could get his chance. In his favour is the fact this is his first run in Class 5 company and his last run in Maiden company good enough to win this with a downgrade to winkers stepping up in trip. Some unreliables in JOHHNY HATES JAZZ, REAL GOODMAN, ZENA and CHENGDU WARRIOR all go close on best form with DOUBLE HOCK probably the horse with the most honest form of late and a solid each-way hope with Flores up.

1 EXCEPTIONAL CHOICE *** Maiden form suggests Class 5 will suit and can win stepping up to the mile with downgrade to winkers. 5.00
2 FANTASTIC BOY ** Up in trip and winkers off after showing little at recent runs and have to take on trust. 33
3 RADIANT ROI ** Recent form only average but appreciates claim and the gate 1. 33
4 REAL GOODMAN *** Showed last start why he is always some hope this trip and surface but can disappoint. 12
5 GANGNAM STYLE * Has speed but a big query this trip. 33
6 JOHNNY HATES JAZZ *** Form reads badly but drawn well and might be a sneaky hope with Zaki up. 10
7 CHENGDU WARRIOR *** Drawn wide but had looked due and pay to keep safe. 4.00
8 DOUBLE HOCK *** Maiden who is in form and should appreciate Davey Flores. 4.00
9 SUPER VELOX *** Maiden having 50th start but oddly, looks ready to win. 8.00
10 TRIPLE GOALS ** In the exotic mix but a win would surprise. 33
11 ZAC WARRIOR ** Tongue-tie on after OK run at this trip last start. Include somewhere. 20
12 ZENA *** Showed last start why she is always some hope this trip/surface. 8.00

Race 9

Selections; 1 LORD BROMPTON – 9 ALFONSO – 3 QUECHUA – 5 BOGART
A very tough race with a few stayers having their first or second-up runs and a few smart types in form suggesting the finish will be busy. Add a newcomer from Argentina and the tote my be our best friend. In saying that, LORD BROMPTON has won first-up over this trip only six starts back and given four out of his next five were good runs in Group company, he must be respected. Mark Walker has two stayers in this – REIDEL and SMILESWITHHISEYES – and both appreciate very solid first-up runs and both go close to winning this. QUECHUA is the Argentinean and he won his trial – albeit in a slow time – but you can be sure Pat Shaw will have him ready to show his best at his Singapore debut with market the best guide. You can make a case for rest with BOGART in winning form, ALFONSO smarter than a few and TIGER MASTER better than what he showed last start.

1 LORD BROMPTON *** Smart type resuming and goes well this trip first-up. 10
2 TIGER MASTER *** Pay to ignore last start where something looked amiss as usually a solid each-way show in these. 8.00
3 QUECHUA *** Group winner from Argentina who comes into this with a solid run under his belt. Market a good guide. 6.00
4 TOUCH OF GOLD ** Placed last time he ran over this trip and will keep them honest late. 12
5 BOGART *** Only poor run of late was in the Guineas and looks a leading show on last start win. 4.00
6 SMILESWITHHISEYES ** First-up run was promising but might want longer again to win. 10
7 LUCKY MISSION ** Has been mixing his company and races of late but some hope on a good day. 10
8 RIEDEL *** Another Walker stayer who ran on well fresh last start and could win this if handier when it matters. 8.00
9 ALFONSO *** Honest and looks well up to this with 51.5kg. 4.00

Race 10

Selections; 1 BRINGITHOME – 3 TWODOLLARMUPPET – 9 SIMPANG – 7 PETITE VICTOIRE
At first glance a last start winner in TWODOLLARMUPPET could be too good for this field with a couple of well-beaten fourths the best recent form from the other hopefuls. TWODOLLARMUPPET swooped when winning on that occasion suggesting he might get better over longer and certainly will make his presence felt at the business end in this. But while well-beaten as the odds-on punters elect at his last start, BRINGITHOME is smart and hopefully brings his “A game” first-up after a long spell. Obviously the spell suggests something was amiss back in January and the break hopefully has done the lightly-raced 4YO the world of good. The race doesn’t have depth so a couple of horses closer to Class 5 than anywhere else in SIMPANG and PETITE VICTOIRE should race well and both should be value given the support likely for the muppet.

1 BRINGITHOME *** Resuming after being disappointing as the odds-on pop in January but may have had excuses and claim helps here. 3.00
2 SINGLE ACT ** Over-due to break Singapore duck but drop back in trip is a concern. 10
3 TWODOLLARMUPPET *** Finished over the top of them when supported to win maiden last start. Can follow. 2.00
4 FARRAND ** Very disappointing last start in similar affair and have to take on trust. 7.50
5 STAR RAINBOW * Saddle slipped last start but prefer over longer in Class 5. 50
6 MOOVA FISH * Struggling. 50
7 PETITE VICTOIRE *** Did it tough last start and recent form better than it reads. Value. 12
8 OCEAN DREAM * Well beaten into fourth last start and easy to ignore. 33
9 SIMPANG *** Excuses not to finish close in Class 4 last start and looks well-placed here to go well. 12

Race 11

Selections; 2 SPUN GOLD – 5 DEAUVILLE – 10 CONFIERO – 7 BUNGAE
A great race to finish the card and expect a very busy finish and support for five or so runners. Of those who should get support, two last start winners in SPUN GOLD and DEAUVILLE look the stand-outs. SPUN GOLD turned some good form since returning after a bleeding attack to win very well last start. The Brown/Brown combination is a good one and the 4YO could be hard to beat. But DEAUVILLE also won well with heavy support last start and is right in this. The Darci Brahma 4YO was in good form before winning over this trip in KSD company last start and Class 4 is no issue. It gets interesting after that with CONFIERO some hope to make amends after being beaten as the odds-on pop last start and TEQUILA SHOT – a newcomer from South Africa – looks better than Class 4 but might need more ground to show his best. For value, keep BUNGAE safe and TO BE REMEMBERED is always an each-way hope.

1 TEQUILA SHOT *** Former South African (half-bro to Lizarre) who will be better than Class 4 but over longer. 10
2 SPUN GOLD *** In winning form and happy to follow over his best trip. 4.00
3 TO BE REMEMBERED *** Always an each-way show in Class 4 and drop back to 1400m a good move. 12
4 HARDEN UP ** Last start better than the result and pay to include in exotics at value. 20
5 DEAUVILLE *** Turned some good form into a very strong win and more than up to this company. 3.50
6 JIMTOWN ** Not far away at odds last start and another to include at value with winkers added. 20
7 BUNGAE *** Excuses not to finish closer at his first-up run and could surprise at odds with extra 200m in his favour. 20
8 GOOD LOOUKEN * Form OK but prefer on the Polytrack. 33
9 DAHLHAUS * Needs longer. 100
10 CONFIERO *** Beaten as the odds-on pop last start but can make amends in what is a suitable race. 3.50
11 BREAKING VAULTS ** Appreciates first-up run and improves lengths over 1400m. 20
12 BRAVE SISTER * Will lead but might be looking for easier. 100
13 GOLDEN PASTURE ** Maiden who went OK last start with excuses but eligible for easier. 33

The Inspiring Story Of Dr Marianne Thomson

‘I am writing this as an older, small breeder and in our language, Markus, because this is our war. If I phoned you, I’d be overwhelmed by business jargon within a minute. What makes you so angry that you don’t care what you are doing to our shaky industry? How do you deal with this in your inner, quiet self?’
