Singapore Racing – Friday

Friday 9 May

SmilesWithHisEyes

A rare stand-alone Friday meeting in Singapore as all and sundry prepare for the big International meeting next weekend. Some great races though including an interesting 2YO sprint (race 3) where a few of the youngsters will be hoping to show enough to have a crack at the first Group race for juveniles the following Friday. A couple of newcomers in LA QUINTA and HAPPY HAPPY look to have the pedigree to go very well and in the case of HAPPY HAPPY, some nice enough trials to show up on debut. The tote will be an excellent guide on both those horses and indeed for CASTOR who has the benefit of race experience. The Australian-bred gelding had plenty of excuses on debut and given he has subsequently trailed well with blinkers added, suggests he is the big improver. Elsewhere on the card another newcomer in BELLWETHER can win at his Singapore debut. The former Australian winner looked very smart clocking a good time when bolting in at his only trial which suggests he is ready to go super first-up for Michael Freedman. He does meet a nice enough field though with support likely for the maiden MASTERMIND who showed plenty at his race debut and should be improved for the run with the experienced Davey Flores up. Some good chances later in the card with SMILESWITHHISEYES and LET’S SEE ACTION in races 7 and 8 respectively looking to have found suitable races to knock in well deserved wins.

.

Best Bets; (SMILESWITHHISEYES race 7, win), (LET’S SEE ACTION race 8, win) and (CASTOR race 3, value).

Race 1

Selections; 1 SPOT ON – 9 SEA OF LOVE – 2 FLUTZ – 8 READY FORTUNE
A Maiden over 1700m kicks off the all polytrack programme and most of these have been seen before and found wanting, however, there is not much between half a dozen of them. SPOT ON has been a bookies’ pal most of his career, he fought on well in a KSD over 1400m when resuming, the visor goes on and the distance and engagement of Davey Flores give him an undeniable chance. SEA OF LOVE has been racing well on turf over a mile and Corey Brown stays on; this distance should suit and if she handles the poly will be hard to beat. READY FORTUNE was never in it last start but his previous two runs since resuming were good and he was placed at this trip before the let-up; Manoel Nunes rides and and he should get a good run from the barrier draw. The pacifiers go on FLUTZ who failed last start but has raced well for Lisa Allpress previously. He ran 4th at his only two polytrack runs and should be able to race handy in this. CLASSIC THUNDER is still a maiden after 29 starts but he can run on late and could surprise as could MARINE PARK, GREYSTOKE and COURT MAGICIAN. In a very open race, the emergencies JET COSMO and PEREGRINE FALCON both have chances if they get a start.

1 SPOT ON *** Blinkers to visor. Fought on well in KSD over 1400m when resuming. This is much more suitable and gets senior rider. 4.00
2 FLUTZ *** Blinkers off. Unsighted last start after solid third start prior over 1600m on turf. Ran 4th at only two polytrack runs and gets Lisa Allpress back. Should race handy. 6.00
3 MARINE PARK ** Failed last start in KSD company over 1900m on poly. Previous turf form over a mile was good. Take on trust on surface. 12
4 MIGHTY ASTROBOY * Yet to show up in three outings over shorter journeys. 33
5 GREYSTOKE ** Having third run back from spell. Fitter now and this distance could suit. Watch for support. 12
6 COURT MAGICIAN ** Has led and fought on well at last two efforts over a mile in Class 5. Poorly drawn but could give a sight. 12
7 THREE WHIP * Needs to improve on what we have seen so far. 33
8 READY FORTUNE *** Never in it last start but previous two runs on resuming were good and was placed at this trip before let-up. Will appreciate senior rider and should get good run from draw. 5.00
9 SEA OF LOVE *** Has been racing well on turf over a mile. This distance should suit and if she handles the poly will be hard to beat. 5.00
10 ATIAMURI * Placed two starts back over 1700m in Cl5 but not the easiest to follow. 20
11 CLASSIC THUNDER ** Ran on from a long way back over 1900m last start. Has yet to win in 29 starts but recent form gives him a chance. 12
12 CHAPTER AND VERSE * Battles away but needs to improve on recent efforts. 25
13 JET COSMO *** Pacifiers to blinkers. Got too far back last start. Best effort was four starts back with this rider. Good chance if he gets a start. 6.00
14 PEREGRINE FALCON ** Tongue tie on. Battled on well over 1200m last start. Has raced well at 1600m in the past and could show up if he gets a start. 16

.

Race 2

Selections; 4 POWER LIN – 3 HARDCORE ROCK – 12 ART OF WAR – 8 FULL MEANING
An Initiation over 1100m brings together a mixed bunch including 2YO. Of those we have seen POWER LIN has plenty of ability but is very green, so gets pacifiers and tongue tie; if Dan Beasley can steer him straight from the ace he will be hard to beat. The blinker pacifiers go on FULL MEANING who also raced greenly last start after a good debut; Oscar Chavez gets on to keep him tractable and he will have benefited from his recent trial. Bruce Marsh and Zuriman are in great form and the Elusive City gelding TRUST ME made a good polytrack debut and should be further improved. AUREUS ran a good second over 1400m on turf last start, he has plenty of speed and handles the poly; Barend Vorster should give him every chance. Amongst the several interesting runners is ART OF WAR – a 2YO whose two efforts have been good and he trialed well recently; with Willie Tan up he has no weight and may be hard to beat. HARDCORE ROCK is a $180K NZD yearling by Fastnet Rock, a brother to the ill-fated DREAM ON. He had four starts in NZ and never finished further back than fourth; he has had one quiet trial and is poorly drawn but has Manoel Nunes to steer – if there is support he will be hard to beat. TOU SHOU BRIGHT is another interesting first starter; by Singapore Gold Cup winner Carry the Flag out of a half-sister to WHY BE, he sold to Takaoka-san for 210,000 AUD at the 2011 Magic Millions National Horses in Training Sale, he showed nothing in his trial but bears watching.

1 JUSEAGLEYE * Battles on but may well need longer. 33
2 TOU SHOU BRIGHT * First start. By Singapore Gold Cup winner Carry the Flag out of a half-sister to WHY BE. Sold for 210,000 AUD at 2011 Magic Millions National Horses in Training Sale. Did not show up at trial and poorly drawn. 33
3 HARDCORE ROCK *** By Fastnet Rock. 180K NZD yearling who is a brother to DREAM ON. Had four starts in NZ and never finished further back than fourth. Had one quiet trial. Poorly drawn but has leading rider. 6.00
4 POWER LIN *** Pacifiers and tongue tie on. Has ability but very green. From the ace should give a bold sight. 4.50
5 AUREUS *** Showed speed and fought on over 1400m last start. Has raced well on poly in past and from the good gate should give a bold sight. 6.00
6 LUMINESCENCE ** Battles away and was placed this trip three starts back. Should be thereabouts. 10
7 HORAZ SAMOSIR * Needs to improve. 50
8 FULL MEANING *** Blinker pacifiers on. Raced greenly last start after good debut. Had a quiet trial and gets Oscar Chavez. 6.00
9 ROYAL FLUSH * By Elvstroem. Did not show up in trial. Watch for support. 25
10 TRUST ME *** Debut effort was good, by Elusive Quality, a sire whose progeny love the polytrack and should be further improved. 6.00
11 HERE COME BUDDY * Not yet. 50
12 ART OF WAR *** 2YO whose two efforts have been good and trialed well recently. Has no weight and may be hard to beat. 6.00
13 SMART MOVE * Recent trial only average. No. 50
14 KEVIN ELEVEN * Hard ridden throughout to win trial recently. Did nothing at only start. 33

.

Race 3

Selections; 1 CASTOR – 5 LA QUINTA – 2 HAPPY HAPPY – 4 IRREPRESSIBLE
A 2YO race over 1000m and as with all of these, the market may be the best guide particularly given the plethora of gear changes. Of those we have seen, none look outstanding though CASTOR may be the one with most improvement. After a solid debut with excuses, the blinkers go on and his recent trial suggests they will help. Michael Freedman trots out LA QUINTA, by Nicconi, he is a half brother to the smart RESISTANT; as is the trainer’s way he has had a couple of quiet trials and with Manoel Nunes up should debut well. Alwin Tan debuts HAPPY HAPPY, by Red Dazzler his dam has produced multiple winners and his trials indicate he has inherited the family ability. The Steven Burridge pair IRREPRESSIBLE and I’M KOOL could make their presence felt.

1 CASTOR *** Blinkers on. Fair effort on debut and followed up with a good trial. Should improve. 5.00
2 HAPPY HAPPY *** By Red Dazzler. Blinker Pacifiers on. Has looked useful at trials. Full brother to KUCHINSKAYA and half-brother to six other winners including FIRENZA and EASY VIRTUE. Watch for support. 4.00
3 I’M KOOL ** Has shown speed but faded at both outings. Well drawn, tongue tie should help and will be on the pace. 6.00
4 IRREPRESSIBLE ** Blinker Pacifiers on. By Dane Shadow. Three-quarter brother to handy MR SOMMERVILLE out of a 6-time winning mare. Has looked useful at trials, watch for support. 6.00
5 LA QUINTA *** Blinkers on. By Nicconi. Half-brother to smart performer RESISTANT. Has had a couple of quiet trials but should debut well. 3.50
6 PO’DE OURO ** Only battled on debut but by speed sire Nicconi and could improve. 10
7 SATELLITE PRINCE * Very green and did little on debut. 25
8 SEASWALLOW * By Patapan. Did not show up at trials. Watch market. 33
9 WONDERFUL ERA * By Northern Meteor. Unsighted in trial. Nicely drawn, watch for support. 16

.

Race 4

Selections; 1 BELLWETHER – 7 MASTERMIND – 4 ORIGIN FAST – 2 NEUTRINOS
A Novice over 1000m full of speedsters in which the interesting runner is BELLWETHER. A Murray Bridge (Sth Aust) Maiden winner and Morphettville place-getter, he recently bolted in a trial and is blessed of abundant speed; with Manoel Nunes on top and a tonguetie applied, he should give them something to chase. NEUTRINOS from the ace, the last start-winner ORIGIN FAST and MASTERMIND also have plenty of toe. Of these, the maiden MASTERMIND gets in well at the weights, Davey Flores takes over from Marcus Au and if ridden more patiently, he could be hard to hold out. If they go crazy in front, FRANCES and KISS ME will be closing.

1 BELLWETHER *** Smashed them in recent trial. Won maiden at Murray Bridge and placed at Morphettville. Has speed and will be hard to pass. 3.50
2 NEUTRINOS *** Speedy and placed in Class 4 two starts back. Will give a bold sight from the ace. 4.50
3 KISS ME ** Racing well and will get the last shot at the leaders. 8.00
4 ORIGIN FAST *** Scored well in Initiation last start. Consistent and will race well again. 4.00
5 FRANCES ** Good effort last start with plenty of excuses. If ridden with patience could overwhelm them late. 8.00
6 UNIVERSAL STARLITE * Outclassed. 20
7 MASTERMIND *** Led clearly before being run down last start. Gets Davey Flores and will be hard to pass. 4.20

.

Race 5

Selections; 1 CAN’T TOUCH ME – 2 BAY OF ISLAND – 3 BLACK BEAN – 7 FOREIGN EXCHANGE
A weak Class 5 over 1600m where, with few exceptions, unreliability is the norm. CAN’T TOUCH ME is better on turf but consistent in this Class, he has a win on the poly and loves 1600m; with the claim for Tengku Rehaizat he will race well. FOREIGN EXCHANGE needs things to go his way and will appreciate a solid speed, with Corey Brown steering if he can be kept in touch and should be closing late, BLACK BEAN is drawn in an outside gate, he will go forward for Troy See and could be hard to pass late. RICH BORN is also likely to go forward as may FAITHFUL WARRIOR. BAY OF ISLAND is not the most reliable but he fought well last outing and is a five time winner at 1600m, he gets a 4kg claim and that could help. BIG HARVEST battles away but may prefer longer and if the emergency ROMA gets a start she could get in the finish.

1 CAN’T TOUCH ME *** Better on turf but consistent in this Class and loves 1600m. Will race well. 4.00
2 BAY OF ISLAND *** Not the most reliable but battled away well last outing and is a five time winner at 1600m. Always a possibility in these. 5.00
3 BLACK BEAN *** Boxed on well last start. Likes to lead, will go forward and can be hard to pass. 5.50
4 STAR RAINBOW ** Usually thereabouts and likely to be so again. 12
5 GOLDEN DRAGON * Form ordinary and needs to improve. 33
6 FAITHFUL WARRIOR * Highly unpredictable but gets back on preferred surface. If he gets a soft lead can be hard to pass. 25
7 FOREIGN EXCHANGE *** Ran on well last start. Needs things to go his way but should be closing late. 5.00
8 BIG HARVEST ** Dour one-pacer who has won at 1600m but gets back and may find this too short. 10
9 STRIDE METEOR * Blinkers off. Recent trial sound but has always failed beyond 1400m. 33
10 RICH BORN ** Not the most reliable but goes best over 1600m when ridden forward. Will appreciate 4kg claim. 10
11 STYLISH LAD * Form poor. 33
12 SUPER VELOX * Been a maiden for a very long time but can get in the placings. 20
13 SUPER ZUCCA ** Resumed with struggling effort over 1200m. Better suited here and should be near the lead for a long way. 16
14 ROMA ** Long term maiden mare who has been around the mark at recent outings. Chance if she gets a start. 16

.

Race 6

Selections; 3 CASSIS OOLONG – 2 MAGICAL SUNSET – 6 SPICY CAT – 4 JADE WIN
A claimers only Class 5 has the alarm bells ringing for punters but with CASSIS OOLONG looking at a hat-trick of wins, there should be plenty of betting interest. The 5YO took a while to get going in Singapore – some 13 starts without a placing – but since blinkers were added he has found out what this racing caper is about with Zaki from gate 1 a good combination. MAGICAL SUNSET finds himself back in Class 5 and in a suitable race and he can win without surprising with Aslam on-board. The 5YO has two wins this trip and three overall on the Poly so a big run is expected. Of the others, two cats – SPICY CAT and ROCKETY CAT – both come under notice after good work late at their respective last starts. Of the two, SPICY CAT was the most eye-catching and worth keeping very safe on his effort late. JADE WIN had excuses last start and it will pay to keep him safe on his previous good form.

1 LIGHTNING MAC ** Form hopeless and drawn badly but will improve lengths in Class 5. 20
2 MAGICAL SUNSET *** Drops to right grade and trip ideal. Big show. 4.00
3 CASSIS OOLONG *** Won two on the trot since blinkers added and might be hard to pass from the ace. 3.00
4 JADE WIN *** Plenty of excuses last start and happy to follow on previous good run of form. 8.00
5 REDDY TO ROCK * Not a mile away last start but better over longer. 33
6 SPICY CAT *** Form reads only fairly but grew wings last start late and pay to keep safe on that effort. 12
7 LIVE WELL * Has pace but needs to show more before we consider. 50
8 GANGNAM STYLE ** Hung on well to place last start and pay to include in exotics. 12
9 STATE TROOPER ** Not at his best last start but usually in the mix. 12
10 PRUSSIAN JACK * Easier to ignore. 50
11 ROCKETY CAT *** Supported and ran on well last start so worth. 6.00
12 GOLDEN ROSEWOOD * Long-term maiden who could fill a minor place at odds. 20
13 ROCKET RIDER ** Resuming after a couple of cheeky races last campaign. 33
14 FUKU’S PET *** Back in Class 5 and the race looks suitable. 8.00

.

Race 7

Selections; 8 SMILESWITHHISEYES – 1 ILUMINADO – 4 SUPER JUNIOR – 7 SMART IDEA
An odd race in the fact you can make a case for most but nothing jumps off the page. It’s a given that the tote might be a handy guide in such an even affair but one that should get support and race well is SMILESWITHHISEYES. The Irish-bred gelding has done more than enough at his six Singapore starts to think he wins races like this and with Nunes retaining the mount, he could be hardest to beat. ILUMINADO is in good form since finding himself in this company and looks another that should garner support. The 6YO loves the Poly with five of his seven Singapore wins on this surface and this trip is his caper. Throw a blanket over the rest with SUPER JUNIOR obviously better than what he showed last start and SMART IDEA right in this from gate two.

1 ILUMINADO *** Due to win a race like this and usually each-way value. 5.00
2 MITRE PEAK * Not at his best of late and have to take on trust. 20
3 BOARD WALK ** Battled on well last start over the mile and might have a say in this. 12
4 SUPER JUNIOR ** Never went a yard last start but some hope if you can ignore that poor run. 6.00
5 GREAT LIGHT ** Better than his recent form suggests and worth thought with head-gear back on. 12
6 BOWIE KNIFE ** Found out in top company last start but more than up to this on his day. 10
7 SMART IDEA ** Good gate handy and looks up to winning a race like this. 8.00
8 SMILESWITHHISEYES *** In form and goes very close to winning this with tongue-tie added. 5.00
9 RIEDEL ** Always in with a show in races like this and a must for exotics. 8.00
10 PURE RABID ** Back in trip but has form this type of race so worth some thought. 12
11 SOLID WOOD ** All good recent form over sprint distances but previously went well this trip. Value. 20
12 WINNING SUCCESS * Hard to have on recent form but goes oK on his day and nearing a drop in grade. 50

.

Race 8

Selections; 1 LET’S SEE ACTION – 5 SELIGI – 2 CASH DOT COM – 6 BEAUTY SUPREME
A good form line for the top picks in this race was a very similar KSC event back in March when LET’S SEE ACTION, SELEGI and BEAUTY SUPREME all raced well behind the smart ASTROSTAR. LET’S SEE ACTION was only beaten half-a-length on that occasion and given he backed that up with a terrific effort in better company, he might be hard to beat in this. BEAUTY SUPREME and SELIGI ran third and fourth respectively on that day and while well beaten, SELIGI gets a 4kg Kif Toh claim and from the ace, should race super and hopefully at some value. Nunes goes on board BEAUTY SUPREME and given he has also drawn well, he should be right in this. CASH DOT COM is coming off a strong win in nice enough company so he has to be a winning hope with CODIGO and SPEED DEMON the only other two to worry about.

1 LET’S SEE ACTION *** Foot on the the till and should be able to carry 58kg dropping back to this company and win. 3.00
2 CASH DOT COM *** In winning form and drawn to advantage so pay to follow. 5.00
3 SPEED DEMON ** Form better than it reads and in this for a long way. 8.00
4 CODIGO ** Supported and did it tough enough last start to give another chance. 8.00
5 SELIGI *** Very consistent and often value so keep very safe with Kif Toh from gate 1. 12
6 BEAUTY SUPREME *** Not a lot last start but previous form in similar affairs to this has him under notice. 8.00
7 TREASUREINTHEHEART * Like to see something before considering. 50
8 LONESOME ME * Placed when resuming this trip but better over longer. 20
9 THEOLOGY * Disappointing last run and needs easier. 33
10 HEAR ME * Back in trip and up in grade. No. 100
11 STREET RUFFIAN * Last start a beauty considering the company but love to see in Class 5. 33

.

Race 9

Selections; 5 FLYING ZERO – 7 ACCOMPLISHED – 2 DOUBLE STAR – 1 SOLITAIRE
A nice race to close proceeding with some solid types up against some progressive youngsters. From the horses showing plenty early in their careers, ACCOMPLISHED looks a horse with a future. The Australian-bred 3YO has knocked in two wins and three places from only six career starts and while he can find trouble, he goes close if any luck in running, FAITHFULLY also looks an honest 3YO to follow although he needs to knock in a win in better than KSD company before he is seriously considered in this field. FLYING ZERO might be the testing material though. The 5YO may not have won since June last year but his recent form is excellent and it must be a case of sooner than later that he knock is his third Singapore win. At the the top of the weights, SOLITAIRE won well enough last start to think he will keep them all honest late and DOUBLE STAR looks extremely well placed with a R Rueven 3kg claim to win with support likely. Keep an eye on both emergencies as well – especially EASY MONEY who raced in 3YO Group company last start.

1 SOLITAIRE *** Won well last start and will be finishing on well again. 5.00
2 DOUBLE STAR *** Always in the mix in this type of race and a win would not surprise. 4.00
3 MY FRIEND JO * Appreciates first-up run but needs longer than this. 33
4 TO BE REMEMBERED ** Knocked in a well deserved win last start but this is tougher and exotics best option. 12
5 FLYING ZERO *** Due and this race look suitable. 3.00
6 RISING EMPIRE ** Last start better than the result and might be ready to show his best. 33
7 ACCOMPLISHED *** Excuses again last start not to finish closer and looks up to this company. 8.00
8 FAITHFULLY ** Probably needs it a tad easier to win but has ability and can follow. 8.00
9 GYPSY MAGIC * Won two of last four but needs easier than this. 33
10 SUPER STRIKE ** Racing well at value of late and worth including in exotics. 20
11 WARISAN * Ran on OK late last start but eligible for easier company. 33
12 GLOBAL CAST * No. 200
13 SHIN GOONG ** Battled on OK last start but still under notice on strong Class 4 two back. 16
14 EASY MONEY *** Pay to ignore soft run in 3YO Classic as would be right in this late if he gets a start. 6.00

The Enchanting Currency Of Fate

It is eerie to think that there would have been no Siren’s Call, Sound Of Warning, or for that matter Call To Unite, had fate not decreed that Enchanted Cove follow her dam to South Africa, and that Peter de Beyer had the foresight to return Elusive Fort back home from the States as well!
