Singapore Racing – Friday

TERMS OF REFERENCE looks well placed (Pic by Singapore Turf Club)

With only days before the horse’s birthday (Southern Hemisphere) and with the Group 3 Juvenile Championship to be held on Sunday, it’s worth having a looking at some of the 2YO’s racing against older company who get an all-important pull in the weights.

DREAM COMES TRUE certainly fits that bill in race 2 on Friday and the debutante can win with just 50kg to carry.

There was a lot to like about the NZ-bred gelding’s trials and while he has found a race with depth, he looks good enough to make use of the lightweight and win.

Elsewhere on the nine-race card, Barend Vorster looks to have a good book of rides – including the 2YO DICAPRIO in race 2 – and can add another win or two to his tally of wins for trainer Pat Shaw.

frontad-singapore-airlines-cup_140x120The South African compatriots have been a solid fixture in Singapore for many years and team up with ODE TO JOY and TERMS OF REFERENCE in races seven and three respectively and both can win.

In particular ODE TO JOY looks a strong chance when resuming in what is a suitable race with a very good recent trial a pointer to his chances.

Friday 29 July

Best Bets: (ODE TO JOY race 7 win), (DREAM COMES TRUE race 2, win) and (TERMS OF REFERENCE race 3, value).
Bankers for Jackpots: Race 6 (2, 4, 8 and 9), race 7 (1, 2, 5, 6 and 8), race 8 (1, 2, 3 and 4), race 9 (2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 9, 10, 11 and 12).

Race 1

Selections; 2 JUST NAME IT – 5 LIM’S RESPOND – 7 SUPER EIGHT – 1 HERECOMESMYMONEY
As is often the case in these Class 5 races, we keep one eye on recent Class droppers and JUST NAME IT showed last start he wins sooner than later in this company. WS Chan and his 3kg claim stays on and from the good gate they should be hard to hold out. LIM’S RESPOND has also drawn to advantage in gate 1 and given his recent form and penchant to lead, he will look the winner at some stage late. HERECOMESMYMONEY is not in the best of form of late but drops in Class and M Rodd should give her every chance to show her best from gate 5. SUPER EIGHT picks himself on form and Nunes from gate 3 suggests he gets plenty of support and can win. EDEN GARDEN improved last start and is one to keep safe.

1 HERECOMESMYMONEY *** Recent form a concern but has shown ability and appreciates Class 5. 12
2 JUST NAME IT *** Showed last start he wins very soon in Class 5 and must go close. 5.00
3 ANGRY CAT ** Disappointing last start but can run on so keep safe. 12
4 EDEN GARDEN *** Put in best effort to place last start and has to be a show on that run. 12
5 LIM’S RESPOND *** Not far away similar affair two starts back and in this a very long way from gate 1. 4.00
6 NOVA VICTORY ** Draw a concern but excuses last start and previous form was sound. 20
7 SUPER EIGHT *** In form and gets the favours from gate 3. 3.00
8 RORY * Prefer to see over 1000m. 50
9 MASTER BANGER ** Gets winkers back in winning grade so look for improvement. 12
10 SWIFT ** Back in trip after improving to place last start and have to take on trust. 20
11 BREAKING VAULTS ** Can mix his form and have to take on trust on the Poly. 20
12 CLERMONT CLUB * Form poor and needs longer. 200
13 KAISER BRIGHT ** Not a mile away last start similar company and pay to keep safe. 12
14 SPECTA DILEMMA * Has pace but usually found out. 50

Race 2

Selections; 11 DREAM COMES TRUE – 10 DICAPRIO – 1 SUPER BALL – 6 PRESENTING WIN
You could make a case for five or six horses as you go through the form in this Restricted Maiden but when push comes to shove a 2YO named DREAMS COME TRUE looks hardest to beat. His trial suggests he knows how to hit the line and is ready to race and given Nunes rides on 50kg, he is the one to be on. Punters won’t miss him but another 2YO in DICAPRIO may be value given his just fair debut. But a recent good trial and blinkers to blinkers right side only may see marked improvement. Of the 3YO’s, SUPER BALL has the race form on the board and will go well first-up after a spell while MAXIMUS showed more than enough placing last start with excuses to follow in this race with gate 1 a bonus. PRESENTING WIN, TYPHON and BRISTOL DIAMOND all debutantes with good enough trial form to win.

1 SUPER BALL *** Resuming after a couple of good runs and wins this without surprising. 5.00
2 DAYUAN * Appreciates first up run but may need longer. 50
3 NOVA ACE ** Pulled up lame last start so could ignore as has shown enough previously to win a race like this. 20
4 BRISTOL DIAMOND *** Won recent trial in slow time and previous trial sound so must be a winning hope on debut. 12
5 ENTHUSE * Gets tongue-tie but needs to show more. 50
6 PRESENTING WIN *** Coming off two nice trials and have to respect on debut. 8.00
7 TYPHON *** Another debutante who trials well enough to think he has a big say. 8.00
8 LUCKY STRIDE ** Draw a concern on debut but the odd trial OK so could include in exotics at odds. 33
9 MAXIMUS *** Plenty of excuses when placing on debut and must be a big show after drawing the ace. 6.00
10 DICAPRIO *** Just fair on debut but downgrade to blinkers right side only might do the trick after recent good trial. 10
11 DREAM COMES TRUE *** Trials like he knows a bit about the racing caper and hard to beat with just 50kg. 3.00
12 STAR INVINCIBLE ** Resuming after solid debut and pay to include in exotics with no weight. 20

Race 3

Selections; 6 TERMS OF REFERENCE – 1 ANY RUMOUR – 9 SMART VINTAGE – 31
An extremely open race with a few unknown including TERMS OF REFERENCE and SAVAGE STORM, both having their first crack at the mile. The pair both love the Polytrack so that is no concern and given what they have shown of late, the step up in distance might be a good move. TERMS OF REFERENCE in particular looks well placed sans blinkers from gate 2 and Barend Vorster can knock in another win for longtime supporter Pat Shaw. Too many others with winning hopes to be confident including ANY RUMOUR who is due but drawn wide and KINGS RYKER has also drawn wide but goes close if he gets luck in running. SMART VINTAGE is in solid form and should be value while SIAMESE CAT, FALKIRK LEAD and the two emergencies, VERTICAL START and Q NINE MAXIM, all look winning shows.

1 ANY RUMOUR *** Drawn awkwardly but ready to win and Poly mile looks ideal. 5.00
2 KINGS RYKER *** Also drawn badly but won over the mile on the Poly two starts back and right in this. 6.00
3 SAVAGE STORM *** Query at the trip but in form and should be running on. 10
4 GREENSTONE * Form hopeless but may appreciate the Poly mile. 50
5 SIAMESE CAT *** Hard to follow but will be very handy from gate 3 and recent trial was good. 6.00
6 TERMS OF REFERENCE *** In form and step up to the mile sans blinkers on his preferred surface looks a good combination. 5.00
7 BAAB AL NASR ** Disappointing last couple but race suits and look for improvement. 20
8 RAMZES * Blinkers off but easier to ignore on exposed form. 100
9 SMART VINTAGE *** In form and wins a race like this without surprising. 5.00
10 HIGH BLADE * Gets winkers to try and turn around some poor form. Gate no help. 33
11 FALKIRK LEAD *** In very solid each-way form and will be battling away into winning calculations late. 7.00
12 SILENT CONNECTION * No. 100
13 VERTICAL START *** Always a hope in races like this so keep very safe if he gets a start with blinkers off. 10
14 Q NINE MAXIM *** Will be running on at the business end and must be considered. 12

Race 4

Selections; 2 GABBAR – 3 HOFFMAN – 1 GOOD DEAL – 13 NEO’S CLASSIC
Another extremely tough race and with heavy support expected for GABBAR and HOFFMAN, something will have to give on the tote with some of the other winning hopes so there will be one eye on value. But as it stands both GABBAR and HOFFMAN were both heavily supported last start and both had excuses not to win. GABBAR had plenty of traffic issues in the straight and no reason why he can’t win this with more luck in running. HOFFMAN’S saddle slipped last start which couldn’t have helped so his effort to place with support easily good enough to win this. However, too many others win without surprising including the 2YO NEO’S CLASSIC with GOOD DEAL, LETHAL WEAPON. PUSONG PINOY and MOON CHARM all a show on form with hopefully value on offer.

1 GOOD DEAL *** Will be running on late and wins without surprising. 8.00
2 GABBAR *** Excuses not to win with heavy support last start and get his chance to make quick amends. 3.40
3 HOFFMAN *** Saddle slipped last start when supported in similar affair and right in this. 3.50
4 CHARLIE CAME ALONG * No. 100
5 GOLD POWER ** Could make excuses last start when blinkers added and pay to keep safe. 33
6 LETHAL WEAPON *** Ran on well last start over 1400m and looks ready to put it all together. 12
7 PUSONG PINOY *** Will race on the pace and should be in this a very long way. 8.00
8 MOON CHARM *** Improving with racing and ready to win with gate 1 a bonus. 8.00
9 CARNELIAN * Needs to lift on previous two average efforts. 33
10 HOLY TRILOGY * Clipped heels last start but still needs to show more. 33
11 BRILLIANT STAR * No. 200
12 BOHEMIAN * Ran on OK very late last start but might need further again. 50
13 NEO’S CLASSIC *** Round the mark last couple and has be a considered with just 48.5kg. 8.00

Race 5

Selections; 1 VERGLATICA – 3 SWAN SONG – 10 URBAN LEGEND – 2 GALAXY EXPRESS
Some serious “nonnies” in this race and in what is not good news for followers, we have one on top in VERGLATICA. The 6YO hasn’t won in some 13 starts in 2016 and that was after a very long lean spell but his form of late and the fact he is in Class 5 suggests he has to win another one sooner than later. And the fact he is in Class 5 is significant when you consider he ran fourth in the Singapore Derby back in 2014. He had support last start when he did it tough and he gets his chance here with V Duric up. Of the rest, SWAN SONG wasn’t a mile behind VERGLATICA last start and his work late suggests he is worth following in a race like this and obviously GALAXY EXPRESS won that race so he has to be followed. Of the rest, URBAN LEGEND looks ready to win again with his best work expected late.

1 VERGLATICA *** Continues to race well without a result but should win one soon. 3.00
2 GALAXY EXPRESS *** Broke through for first Poly win last start and pay to keep following. 5.00
3 SWAN SONG *** Hit the line OK late last start in similar company and should be in the mix. 5.00
4 ACROSS THE SEA ** In solid form and could get a result at first start on the Poly. 8.50
5 SPEED CRAFT ** Better than what he showed last start and appreciates the better gate. 33
6 HAPPY JOY ** Bounced back to form last start and some hope on that effort. 20
7 WALTERS BAY * Needs to lift. 50
8 NOVA POWER * No. 50
9 SUPER VELOX ** Not winning out of turn an understatement but always looks some hope. 8.00
10 URBAN LEGEND *** Will be doing best work late and another to keep safe. 12
11 GRAND PARIS ** Very hard to follow but has to be respected on best form. 8.00

Race 6

Selections; 8 ALWAYS A WINNER – 9 LAM EDITION – 2 SATELLITE STAR – 4 ELEGENT
As you would expect a very average field and as such ALWAYS A WINNER gets another chance to knock in a win for connections. The 6YO has won five times in a 69-start career and while just fair with support last start, he must be hard to beat if having a good day with winkers off. A maiden in LAM EDITION might be his biggest danger. The 6YO has been in very solid form of late – in fact she is probably in the best form of any in this weak field – so gets her chance at start 26. SATELLITE STAR and the 3YO GOOD LUCKY two others that win without surprising but hard to be confident of anything in this race. Keep PRINCETON safe in exotics at long odds on good recent trial form.

1 LION WAVE ** Showed plenty of improvement last start under Duric and pay to follow. 8.00
2 SATELLITE STAR *** Has been running on well over 1100m and gets his chance here. 6.00
3 GOOD LUCKY ** Blinkers on. Has run on fairly at past two outings and can improve again. 12
4 ELEGENT *** Wide gate a concern but not far away last start and does enjoy Class 5. 8.00
5 HIGHLIGHT ** OK late last start and could be ready to show he has something to offer in Class 5. 8.00
6 SECRET MAN ** Maiden who should be competitive with blinkers off. 8.00
7 BARNBURGH LAD * Not at his best this campaign. 33
8 ALWAYS A WINNER *** Just fair last start but this race is weak and goes close with winkers off. 4.00
9 LAM EDITION *** Maiden who has as good as form as any leading into this and can win. 6.00
10 SUPER SPUR * Mixes his form and easier to ignore. 20
11 PRINCETON ** Nothing when resuming but recent trial was good with tongue-tie added so could surprise at long odds. 100
12 SECONDWAVE * Wide gate makes this tough. 33
13 SPACE ODDITY ** Another that mixes his form and have to take on trust. 20
14 REAL GOODMAN ** Showed again last start why he is always a big show on the Poly. 12

Race 7

Selections; 2 ODE TO JOY – 8 DIVIDED HOUSE – 6 RISKY ROCKEFELLER – 5 VON KRUMM
The best race on the card and plenty of good horses in-form to suggest the race will be a beauty. Two horses resuming will also make things interesting for punters with ODE TO JOY and RISKY ROCKEFELLER both some hope. In particular ODE TO JOY resumes after a good win over this trip and his recent trials suggests he is ready to go on with the job. RISKY ROCKEFELLER gets blinkers back on as he drops back in trip but his form was good and looks a horse to follow. DIVIDED HOUSE also looks a big show. The 4YO mare was found out in Group Company last start but her form prior coupled with a good recent trial has her under notice. VON KRUMM is also in terrific form without a result so blinkers come off and he must go close. CASTOR isn’t seen often on the turf but is a winning show on recent form.

1 CASTOR *** Made his name as a Poly specialist but handles the turf and a big show on form. 6.00
2 ODE TO JOY *** Resuming after strong win this trip and recent trials suggests he goes close first-up. 3.00
3 JUSTICE DAY ** Too many excuses last start similar affair to get a line on form so keep safe. 20
4 REACH FOR THE SUN ** Goes good on his day but long time between wins so take on trust. 20
5 VON KRUMM *** Blinkers off as he tries to turn some good form into a win. Goes close. 6.00
6 RISKY ROCKEFELLER *** Resuming with blinkers after a very good run of form and must be respected. 5.00
7 SUN PIONEER * In winning form but a better option on the Poly. 20
8 DIVIDED HOUSE *** Ignore last start in Group company as honest and always a winning show in races like this with nice recent trial a pointer. 6.00
9 RED DAWN * Excuses last start but prefer most others on recent form. 33
10 GATO NEGRO ** Might be looking for something easier but the type to keep safe. 15
11 DESERT FOX * Reassess easier company. 50

Race 8

Selections; 3 GRAND CROSS – 1 GOLDEN CASINO – 2 SUPERSONICSURPRISE – 4 POWER LIN
A solid Class 4 Poly sprint but one where we should be able to put a line through at least half the field, so exotic combinations might be the way to go. Not much separates those that are in form though and as such we are hoping GRAND CROSS improves on what was a good Singapore debut and can win. He had enough support on that occasion to think the stable has a good opinion of him and V Duric can get the job done. GOLDEN CASINO is the horse he has to beat. The 4YO hasn’t won over this trip on the Poly but is in cracking form and gets his chance from gate 3. Of the rest, SUPERSONICSURPRISE finds himself in the right grade and must be respected and POWER LIN is in good form and goes close. Keep the second emergency BLACK MAGIC safe if he gets a start as he can win with blinkers added.

1 GOLDEN CASINO *** Racing in terrific form and versatile to get a result with gate 3 a bonus. 3.50
2 SUPERSONICSURPRISE *** Finds himself in the right race and company and looks a big show. 8.00
3 GRAND CROSS *** Supported when running ell at his Singapore debut with excuses early and can win this. 3.00
4 POWER LIN *** Drawn awkwardly but in very good form and has to be a winning hope. 4.50
5 CLIP THE TICKET * Freshened after some poor form and have to take on trust. 33
6 ARION ** Resuming after disappointing run in this company but pay to keep safe at first start on the Poly. 12
7 CERTAINLY ** Resuming and goes good enough to consider first up over this trip. 12
8 GOLDEN MISSION * Just battling of late. 100
9 SUPER JOY * Competitive on his day but should need easier than this. 33
10 FANTASTIC MAN ** Might need easier to win but competitive on his day. 20
11 MONEY KING * Reassess easier over longer. 100
12 A LOT IN HAND * Not a mile away when leading last start but like to see in Class 5. 33
13 CASH BOX * No. 200
14 BLACK MAGIC *** First-up run was good and always a show in races like this with recent trial a pointer with blinkers on. 6.00

Race 9

Selections; 7 LIM’S CRUISER – 9 VRAAD – 11 ROYAL EASTER – 2 IDYLLIC SCENERY
Ouch. Let’s hope we have found a few winners earlier as the last race looks tougher than most and good luck if you find the winner. LIM’S CRUISER backed up his Singapore maiden win with a very solid second placing behind Conilad and happy to think that Novice form will hold up in Class 4. Likewise, VRADD placed second in Novice company last start and given he drops from 57kg to 52.5kg, he must be a huge show with Nunes to ride. Too many others to consider but IDYLLIC SCENERY, MARK ECLIPSE, OCEAN GENERAL, THE JEUNEYMAN, HOT GOLD, ROYAL EASTER and MAREA NEGRO all win without surprising and some have to get out to very juicy odds.

1 NAZIR * Appreciates Singapore debut and extra trip suits so watch for any support. 33
2 IDYLLIC SCENERY *** Just missed when resuming and worth a look over a suitable trip with J Powell from gate 1. 8.00
3 MARK ECLIPSE *** Turned some solid form into a win this trip last start and should be up to Class 4. 8.00
4 OCEAN GENERAL *** Yet to win on the turf but in form and will go forward and give a sight. 8.00
5 THE JEUNEYMAN *** Freshened after poor run but maiden win this trip and trials have been good so keep safe. 12
6 APOLLO ** Had support when racing keen at Singapore debut and pay to give another chance with blinkers off. 8.00
7 LIM’S CRUISER *** Placed behind a nice enough type last start and hard to beat here with luck from awkward gate. 3.50
8 MONGOLIAN CHIEF ** Solid without being a threat in this company last two but could show up with headgear removed. 20
9 VRAAD *** Ran on well last start this trip in Novice company and suited at the handicap conditions. 8.00
10 HOT GOLD *** Always a show over 1400m and each-way all the way. 16
11 ROYAL EASTER *** Hard to fault form of late and might sneak out to value in a race with depth. 12
12 MAREA NEGRO *** Over a year between wins but looks due and a win at odds would not surprise. 12

The Inspiring Story Of Dr Marianne Thomson

‘I am writing this as an older, small breeder and in our language, Markus, because this is our war. If I phoned you, I’d be overwhelmed by business jargon within a minute. What makes you so angry that you don’t care what you are doing to our shaky industry? How do you deal with this in your inner, quiet self?’
