Singapore Racing – Friday

Friday 20 June

Cash Advance wins at Singapore 04-04-14

Cash Advance (John Powell) makes a winning comeback on Friday night

An odd friday with an even number of races – eight to be exact. Unfortunately it’s not a case of quality over quantity but while some ordinary horses go round, there looks plenty of opportunities for punters to find a few winners.

Starting in the first, SIMPANG looks to have found a very suitable race to knock in a rare win. The 5YO has only picked up one winners cheque in some 23 career starts but showed more than enough at his most recent run to think he is going to win again soon in Class 5. He should also improve back on the Polytrack – his win was this trip and track – and the booking of the in-form and experienced John Powell is a factor. And the man they call “JP” could be looking at book-ending the meeting with CASH ADVANCE in the lucky last.

The 3YO has been beaten as the red-hot favourite at his last two starts but a drop back to 1100m looks perfect and he could be too good for this Class 4 field. Elsewhere on the card, some handy Poly sprinters will head to the starter in race 6 – a BM83 over 1000m. And while SOUTHERN BOSS and FLASH GIFT will give this a big shout, they have drawn wide and SAND LANE for the Brown/Brown combination should have every chance after drawing perfectly in gate 1.

Race 1

Selections; 1 SIMPANG – 6 SPECTA DILEMMA – 4 VOLKOV – 2 REGAL SALUTE
A dreadful Class 5 over 1200m opens proceedings on the polytrack. SIMPANG ran on well last start and while far from trustworthy, could win this if on his game. The 5YO’s only win was this trip and Class and with the experienced and in-form John Powell up, a big run is expected. SPECTA DILEMMA resumed after a long spell with a good second last start, he has been kept fresh with a recent trial and Lisa Allpress takes over from little Zawari, he could be hard to beat. VOLKOV is a speedy customer who knows how to win. The saddle slipped last start and in this field he could get a soft run in front and be hard to pass. Most of the rest are unreliable or non-winners. REGAL SALUTE is a maiden resuming, his form in his previous preparation was sound and with Manoel Nunes on top from a good alley, should race well – watch for support. CELESTIAL STAR is also a maiden but was not far away over 1400m on turf last start, his only placing was in the Class, distance and surface and could race well. SPICY CAT put in a moderate effort last start but flew home at the start prior; whilst his only win was on turf in blinkers he is now under the care of the Class 5 master Sam Chua and could surprise.

1 SIMPANG *** Improved effort last start, only win this trip and gets top rider. Big show. 5.00
2 REGAL SALUTE *** Maiden resuming. Raced sourly at last start before spell. Previous form was good with top rider, good draw and benefit of recent barrier trial merits plenty of respect. 5.00
3 SMART MOVE * Shown little. 33
4 VOLKOV *** Saddle slipped last start. Has plenty of pace and in this field, will give a bold sight. 4.00
5 MOOVA CASH * Form too poor. 50
6 SPECTA DILEMMA *** Blinkers to pacifiers. Resumed with a good effort and kept fresh by recent trial. Will race well. 4.00
7 MOOVA BULLET * Resumed in KSD company last start. This is easier and only win was at this trip. 14
8 CELESTIAL STAR ** Maiden. Not far away over 1400m on turf last start. Only placing was in the Class, distance and surface. Keep safe. 10
9 BALLET DANCER * Hasn’t placed in 12 starts. Blinkers, top rider and ace could help. Watch for support. 14
10 SPICY CAT ** Moderate effort last start but flew home start prior. Only win was on turf in blinkers. 12
11 LUCKY BANKER * 9YO who has not placed in three years. 50

Race 2

Selections; 2 DR OCTOPUS – 4 AMAZEALOT – 1 TOAST’S ANGEL – 3 LUCKY DAPPER
Another ordinary affair, a KSD over 1000m on the poly with a number of horses resuming. Mark Walker has a strong hand with DR OCTOPUS and TOAST’S ANGEL but both horses are resuming and the market will be the best guide. DR OCTOPUS placed behind DANIEL in a Novice at last outing after a good Initiation win; if he is ready, that form is well up to this. The blinkers come off TOAST’S ANGEL and her best form has been without headgear. Her last win was in this grade over 1200m and a recent trial indicates a good first up effort. AMAZEALOT is also resuming, he is very green but has ability and should give a sight from the ace. The new boy – Nareesh Juglall – won at his only ride last weekend and gets the challenge of the professional place-getter LUCKY DAPPER; he rarely runs a bad race but getting him over the line in the premier position has daunted most. PROBO CHANDROSO and MAGIC OCEAN usually race well in this grade and will make their presence felt.

1 TOAST’S ANGEL *** Blinkers off. Resuming. Last win was in this grade over 1200 without blinkers. Recent trial indicates a good first up effort. Watch for support. 6.00
2 DR OCTOPUS *** Resuming. Placed behind DANIEL in Novice at last outing after good Initiation win. Should be well up to this. 3.50
3 LUCKY DAPPER *** Put in a rare poor effort last start but won recent barrier trial. Rarely wins but usually placed. Best efforts have been on turf. 4.00
4 AMAZEALOT *** Maiden resuming. Very green but has ability and should give a sight from the ace. 5.00
5 PROBO CHANDROSO ** Veteran who has not won since Sept 2012 but is often thereabouts. Will be in the finish. 8.00
6 MAGIC OCEAN ** Fought on well last start in Class 4 behind speedster BELLWETHER. Will appreciate a fast speed and should be running on late. 8.00
7 RAPID REWARDS * Speedy, will give a sight but prefers Class 5. 33
8 MACAU ROULETTE * On quick back-up after placing over 1000m in Class 5. Better at that level. 33
9 NORTHERN CAT * Resuming after long break and has changed stables. Was racing well before spell and if right could show up fresh. Watch for support. 25
10 FEED ME MORE * Yet to win in 14 starts and needs weaker. 50
11 HELLOLO * Only battles. 33

.

Race 3

Selections; 4 STILETTO – 3 SOON YI – 1 MAPLE STAR – 6 KAISER BRIGHT
A Class 4 over 1200m on the poly with some good horses but not a great deal of depth. The mare STILETTO raced wide and got into strife when resuming last start; she is better suited in this and with Corey Brown up should race on the speed all the way. KAISER BRIGHT also has plenty of speed and will give them something to catch from the good gate. Of the closers MAPLE STAR resumed with strong effort in KSC over 1000m, he is better suited here and should be closing late. SOON YI is racing very consistently and just missed in KSC company last start; he too will be finishing off strongly. The interesting runner is MILITARY ATTACK, he is resuming after winning over the poly mile last run; a winner over 2000m in the UK he could be readying for the Derby but may sprint well fresh.

1 MAPLE STAR *** Resumed with strong effort in KSC over 1000m. Better suited here and should be closing late. 4.50
2 MILITARY ALLIANCE *** Resuming. Won at a mile in Class 4 last start. Aiming for the Derby but trialed well enough recently to indicate a good first-up performance. Watch market. 6.00
3 SOON YI *** Racing well. Just missed in strong KSC last start. Consistent and should race well again. 4.00
4 STILETTO *** Talented mare who raced wide and copped strife when resuming last start. Better suited here. 3.50
5 DRAPPIER * 5yo mare who won one race from a dozen starts in Japan. Did not show up in trial. Watch for support. 33
6 KAISER BRIGHT *** Has plenty of speed and will give them something to catch from the good gate. 5.50
7 LUCKY COME * Battling and has struck a strong field. 33
8 AERO WINGS JUNIOR * Winkers off. Resuming. Has ability but eligible for easier. 33
9 JONATHAN * Has speed but wants weaker than this. 20
10 ALL MY WAY * Winkers on. On quick back up after fair effort last start. Has been placed at this trip in Class 4 on the poly and could show up with light weight. 20

.

Race 4

Selections; 6 FUMIKO – 3 NOT SIMPLE – 2 MIGHTY ASTROBOY – 9 FEI YUE
Another very ordinary Class 5 this one over 1200m. There should be plenty of speed with PEGASUS VICTORY and FUMIKO in the field. Of the two, FUMIKO won her maiden over 1200m and with Lisa Allpress up from the ace should give a sight while PEGASUS VICTORY has yet to win beyond 1000m. NOT SIMPLE has been disappointing but gets back on the polytrack, drops to Class 5 and is well drawn with the in-form Davey Flores onboard; he can sit on the speed and should improve. FEI YUE has only won one race but goes well on the poly and with John Powell steering should get a nice sit on the speed in this. In a race with no depth ,MIGHTY ASTROBOY has shown improvement at a recent trial and if HAPPY FOREVER is ridden forward he could show up.

1 GENE ** Maiden resuming. Recent trial fair but may want longer. 12
2 MIGHTY ASTROBOY *** Has no form but won a trial recently and this is a weak race. Watch for support. 12
3 NOT SIMPLE *** Has been disappointing. Back on polytrack, in Class 5, well drawn with top rider. Should improve. 6.00
4 SO FREE NOW ** Got dream run to win maiden two starts back. Has enough speed to be handy all the way. 12
5 SUPER STRIKE ** Recent form poor though he is a two time winner at the trip and could show up in this company. 16
6 FUMIKO *** Speedy mare well drawn who won her maiden at this journey. Will give them something to chase. 3.00
7 PEGASUS VICTORY ** Speedy but has yet to win beyond 1000m. Will give a sight. 10
8 DYNASTY KNIGHT * Form only ordinary. 33
9 FEI YUE *** Only win was at this trip. Will get a good run on the speed in this. 3.50
10 HAPPY FOREVER ** Unsighted last three outings. Goes best when ridden forward. Could surprise. 14

.

Race 5

Selections; 2 RISING EMPIRE – 5 BLACK SNOW – 9 CASSIS OOLONG – 8 MASTER DRAGON
A very weak Class 4 over 1200m and the former top 2YO RISING EMPIRE may get his chance. His effort over 1200m on turf last start was good and he ran 4th in a 1000m Class 4 on the poly the start prior; Davey Flores stays on and should give him every chance. With the pacifiers on BLACK SNOW ran a good race last start when 3rd; this race suits and if Lisa Allpress can get a sit he should be handy all the way. MASTER DRAGON has drawn the ace, he has no weight and enough speed to lead, if given a soft run he could be hard to pass. CASSIS OOLONG did enough last start in this company to follow and WORK AHEAD could get in the picture.

1 FLYING AHEAD ** Resuming. Better over longer but could be closing late. 14
2 RISING EMPIRE *** Improved effort at last two outings. Former top 2YO who will be thereabouts again. 3.00
3 DARK PULSE ** Two efforts since resuming have been poor. Will prefer being back on poly, only win was at 1600m. 14
4 FARRAND * Blinkers pacifiers on but needs to improve. 33
5 BLACK SNOW *** Good effort with pacifiers on last start. Suited at 1200m and will be hard to hold out. 3.50
6 WORK AHEAD ** Resumed with fair effort. Has soundness and wind issues but good when right. Watch for support. 10
7 FLY FREELY * Better in Class 5. 33
8 MASTER DRAGON *** Has speed and from the good alley could give a lot of cheek. Only win was in Class 4 over 1200m on the poly. 4.00
9 CASSIS OOLONG *** Won three weak races on end then fought well in stronger grade last start. Chance again. 10
10 AFROJACK * Wants Class 5. 33

.

Race 6

Selections; 7 SAND LANE – 4 FLASH GIFT – 3 SOUTHERN BOSS – 6 DUTY FREE
While a couple of swoopers in DUTY FREE and BIGDINERO might make things interesting late, this does look a race in three with SOUTHERN BOSS, FLASH GIFT and SAND LANE the ones to follow. All three look very well placed over the 1000m and while nothing between them on paper, SAND LANE might get the easier run after drawing the ace and be hard to run down. He is coming off a disappointing run as the beaten even money favourite but that effort probably better than the result and Corey Brown can make quick amends. FLASH GIFT has won five and ran second another four times in 16 career starts and picks himself. Davey Flores rides and from gate 7, he should get a nice sit behind the leaders and get first crack in the straight. SOUTHERN BOSS has plenty more weight to carry since winning well last start but his form too good to ignore although gate 9 is a concern.

1 UPSALA * Impossible on race form but did trial well recently so trip might suit. 33
2 PEACEFUL WARRIOR * Honest but might find a few of these too slick with blinkers off. 20
3 SOUTHERN BOSS *** Plenty of weight to carry but won too well last couple not to be a show here. 3.50
4 FLASH GIFT *** Fresh and always a winning show in races like this. 3.00
5 BIONIC BOY ** Showed little first-up but form previous campaign has him under notice. 20
6 DUTY FREE ** Will be doing best work late but exotics best over 1000m. 12
7 SAND LANE *** Disappointed with heavy support last start but in this a very long way from the ace. 3.00
8 SOUL COMMANDER ** Resuming and would go close if near his best. 12
9 BIGDINERO ** Appreciates being back on the Poly and will be closing late with winkers added. 20

.

Race 7

Selections; 5 URBAN LEGEND – 1 NINTH AVENUE – 4 FOREIGN EXCHANGE – 2 READY FORTUNE
The usual Class 5 staying raffle and it might be a case of watching for support on the day over those with winning hopes. As is stands, URBAN LEGEND is flying along with two wins and a close-up fourth at his last three starts and you have to respect that. His last win was strong and looks well placed here with 55.5kg and Lisa Allpress to follow. NINTH AVENUE is one that should get support back in Class 5 over a suitable trip. He won a similar affair to this five starts back and given his last four starts have been in Class 4 on the turf over shorter trips; you don’t have to a rocket surgeon to think he improves lengths and wins again soon. Throw a blanket over the rest with FOREIGN EXCHANGE some hope after never being involved last start on the turf from a wide gate, the maiden READY FORTUNE who gets gate one and Nunes with KTRONIC and CHENGDU WARRIOR also in the winning mix.

1 NINTH AVENUE *** Ignore last four starts as gets back over right trip on the Poly and must go close. 5.00
2 READY FORTUNE *** Long-term maiden but in solid form and gets Nunes from the ace. Keep safe. 7.00
3 FAITHFUL WARRIOR ** Form looks hopeless but due to lead and goes close if he does. 20
4 FOREIGN EXCHANGE *** Never involved last start from wide gate so ignore and take on previous good form. 6.00
5 URBAN LEGEND *** Hit a purple patch of form and will be flying late. 3.70
6 EISHIN BRIGHT ** Maiden who had excuses last start and previous run good enough to include in exotics. 16
7 KTRONIC *** Ran second in KSD company last start so has to be a show in this. 8.00
8 CHENGDU WARRIOR *** Went very close with support in similar affair last start and right in this. 5.00
9 STYLISH LAD * OK two starts back but struggles as a rule. 50
10 CONQUEST * Could lead. Will fade. 50
11 SUPER VELOX * Long-term maiden but could add value to skinny end of exotics. 33

.

Race 8

Selections; 1 CASH ADVANCE – 2 HERO SUCCESS – 6 SAVAGE STORM – 8 ASSERTIVE LAD
CASH ADVANCE hasn’t done much wrong in five career starts but those punters who have backed him at his last two might be a tad gun-shy following defeats with heavy support. But he lost no friends when beaten by a good one last start over 1200m and given he looks an out-and-out sprinter, the drop back to 1100m looks ideal and he can make amends. He probably starts favourite again but there does look some depth to the field with the likes of HERO SUCCESS, DREAMCATCHER, SAVAGE STORM and ASSERTIVE LAD all ready to win if CASH ADVANCE again lowers his colours. Of the quartet, HERO SUCCESS might be value as his first-up run was better than the result when doing it wide so it will pay to keep the 4YO safe. DREAMCATCHER resumes after a nice KSD win so must be respected with SAVAGE STORM and ASSERTIVE LAD right in this.

1 CASH ADVANCE *** Every chance last start but not disgraced and very much appreciates drop back to 1100m. 3.00
2 HERO SUCCESS *** Last run better than the result given wide trip and right in this from gate 4. 5.00
3 KAISER * Struggling. 100
4 COUP DA VINCI ** Resuming and has first-up form so worth keeping an eye on the tote. 11
5 DREAMCATCHER *** Resuming after nice win in KSD company and should be more than competitive. 12
6 SAVAGE STORM *** Disappointing not to place with heavy support last start but inform and pay to keep safe. 6.00
7 CHEYENNE WARRIOR * Disappointing two starts this campaign and would need some support. 50
8 ASSERTIVE LAD *** Progressive and honest so looks every chance again with winkers off. 5.00
9 SATELLITE KING ** Maiden who has shown more than enough last couple to follow. 12
10 BINGO ** Won last start over 1000m and wide gate not a concern as will be flying late. 16
11 SANDY MIGHT ** Raced maiden from Australia who might just need the run. 20

The Inspiring Story Of Dr Marianne Thomson

‘I am writing this as an older, small breeder and in our language, Markus, because this is our war. If I phoned you, I’d be overwhelmed by business jargon within a minute. What makes you so angry that you don’t care what you are doing to our shaky industry? How do you deal with this in your inner, quiet self?’
