Singapore - Friday 16 October

A La Victory will be tested in race 5

A La Victory will be tested in race 5

Some excellent depth to this nine race card with plenty of solid Class 4 fields in and around a couple of very good BM 83 races.

Race 5 on the card in particular looks a beauty over 1800m and it will hold plenty of attention given most of the horse’s entered will be looking at consolidating runs in the Longines Singapore Gold Cup in November.

And while the top-weight A LA VICTORY will be tested at the journey, two promising stayers in PERFECT P and MR SPEILBERG look ideally placed to continue their Gold Cup preparations with a win.

It’s no coincidence that the pair are trained by big race specialists in Pat Shaw and Laurie Laxon respectively and we may well see the duo fighting it out late in bigger races than this over the next year or so.

The other BM83 on the card (race 7) is over 1400m and while the field is strong, it’s hard to go pass KNIGHT WAGER on what he showed winning over this trip last start.

frontad-singapore-airlines-cup_140x120Early pace is expected on a course that suits so you expect the 5YO swooper will get all the favours with Michael Rodd steering and have last crack in what could be a busy finish. Plenty of value about as well so keep an eye on some horses that could run a race at odds including VERGLATICA who looks suited in race 3 to show he still has something to offer on the Poly.

Race 1

Selections; 1 APPELLATION – 4 PUBLIC FIGURE – 8 HIGHLIGHT – 5 SUGARTIME JAZZ
These higher rated Class 5 races can be tricky given most runners look out of form on paper but the drop in Class usually sees improvement. Case in point is APPELLATION who comes into this after racing in unsuitable Novice Company at his last start. So forget that run and take on some very good form prior to that in KSD Company that will see him win very soon in Class 5. Nunes replacing App Salim helps and expect support. PUBLIC FIGURE is an interesting runner given the maiden has some OK Class 4 form to his name. His record of one placing from some 10 starts doesn’t do his chances justice and he plays a big part with a tongue-tie added and a nice recent trial under his belt. Of the rest with winning hopes, HIGHLIGHT will be the swooper and it will be interesting to see what Munro does from gate 1 while SUGARTIME JAZZ will win again back in Class 5 and is versatile enough to go close here. Go wide in exotics as the race has depth.

1 APPELLATION *** Significant drop in Class and very hard to beat with tongue-tie off. 4.00
2 CHEETAH KING ** Should need longer but also drops in Class and will be motoring late. 20
3 MISS ELYSIUM ** Might find this easier than maiden company and gets senior hoop but like to see some support. 20
4 PUBLIC FIGURE *** Maiden who is in fine form and could be hard to beat in Class 5 with tongue-tie on. 3.50
5 SUGARTIME JAZZ *** Drawn awkwardly but finds himself in the right company and has to be respected. 10
6 D’DON * Reassess shorter and Poly. 50
7 DRAGON INFINITY ** Form reads badly and only win was on the Poly but will improve lengths in Class 5. 12
8 HIGHLIGHT *** Will win soon in this company and will be flying late. 4.00
9 PUBLIC GUARDIAN * Winkers off, tongue-tie on but easier to ignore. 50
10 TURQUOISE SON * Struggles. 100
11 EXCEPTIONAL CHOICE ** Will find this harder than last start win but always worth thought. 6.00

.

Race 2

Selections; 5 FAST JET – 3 CONFEIGN – 2 AGUILA AZTECA – 4 NATURAL IMPULSE
An extremely top heavy maiden with the five top rated horses all having winning hopes and bar HUMMINGBIRD, we can forget the rest. Of those with winning hopes, FAST JET and AGUILA AZTECA both have the form on the board and must win one of these sooner than later. AGUILA AZTECA has had five placings from some nine career starts so hard to fault his honesty and FAST JET has placed at his last four starts since blinkers have been added and must be hard to beat. The interesting runner is CONFEIGN. The 4YO hasn’t raced for over a year but showed ability at his first campaign and a nice recent trial with a tongue-tie added has him under serious consideration. Of the rest, NATURAL IMPULSE is green but will win soon when he gets his act together and ZIPPY improves on his Singapore debut run with headgear added. HUMMINGBIRD could lead with Zaki up but you would want long odds on his recent form.

1 ZIPPY *** Improves with blinkers added after solid Singapore debut and can win. 5.00
2 AGUILA AZTECA *** Super honest and must win soon given form. 3.00
3 CONFEIGN *** Resuming after long break but showed promise at first preparation and recent trial with tongue tie good enough to keep safe. 12
4 NATURAL IMPULSE *** Still has a few things to learn but 1200m suits and should figure in the finish. 6.50
5 FAST JET *** Foot on the till since blinkers added and one of the main fancies. 3.00
6 JET STRIKER * Needs to show more. 50
7 GOLD STOCK * Excuses last start and gets the ace but have to take on trust. 20
8 EXCUSE ME * Would need to apologise if he wins. 33
9 HUMMING BIRD ** Form looks hopeless and drawn wide but gets Zaki and could run a cheeky race at odds. 33
10 VICTORY * Gets winkers but hard to have. 50
11 HEAVENLY GIFT * Not a mile away last start in Class 5 but this looks tougher. 33
12 NOTNOWTOMORROW * Blinkers off and struggling. 100
13 LOYALTY’S ANGEL * No. 100
14 RAINBOW STAR * No. 100

.

Race 3

Selections; 1 ANY RUMOUR – 2 BRAHMS AND LISZT – 3 VERGLATICA – 5 MR CLOONEY
No real standout in this Class 4 over 1800m and as such ANY RUMOUR get this chance to turn some solid form into his third career win. Obviously the 5YO doesn’t win out of turn but with Rodd up from gate 3, he should have no excuses and will figure at the business end. Likewise, BRAHMS AND LISZT has been in solid form of late and while a query over 1800m, he has been finishing off his races very well and no reason to think he doesn’t go close. The interesting runner is VERGLATICA. The 5YO looks out of form but had excuses last start (botched the jump) and will improve lengths in this company on the Poly – hopefully at odds. Most others can certainly figure if having a good day but MR CLOONEY gets blinkers and showed last start he handles this company while SWIFT showed last start that the Poly holds no fears and has to be a winning show.

1 ANY RUMOUR *** Hard to fault recent form and last win was this trip so hard to beat. 3.00
2 BRAHMS AND LISZT *** Work late over mile last start suggests 1800m will suit and worth following. 4.00
3 VERGLATICA *** Form reads badly but excuses last start and should go very close over 1800m. 12
4 MATA MATA * Company will suit but have to take on trust. 33
5 MR CLOONEY *** Showed last start he handles the company and trip so right in this. 6.00
6 TANGIBLE ASSETS * Depreciating. 33
7 SWIFT *** Showed last start he handles the Poly and have to respect. 8.00
8 MEAISIN ** Excuses two back and always worth including in exotics at value. 20
9 KNOW EACH OTHER ** Always a show but hasn’t won since breaking maiden status over a year ago. 6.00
10 SUN DANCE ** Maiden who could pinch a place but should need easier. 20

.

Race 4

Selections; 5 RIGHT IS RIGHT – 1 SHABBAT – 4 ZENZERO – 6 GOLDEN JADE
Oddly for a Class 5 Division 2 field, there looks plenty of form to follow and it should be a very competitive race. In saying that they won’t be breaking any records and some horses do struggle to win. Case in point is RIGHT IS RIGHT who is in fine form since breaking his maiden status back in May but really needs a result. He just missed last stat and with Juglall staying onboard back on the Poly, he looks the testing material. SHABBAT is a maiden but has looked due of late. The 5YO has placed twice from his last three runs and will be doing best work late with Manny Nunes up. ZENZERO is also a maiden but honest enough to follow in races like this while GOLDEN JADE also looks to have found some form at his last couple and can also win. A few others could show up on a good day so go wide in exotics.

1 SHABBAT *** Maiden but recent form has been solid and will figure somewhere late. 4.00
2 REYSHA ** Mixes his form but won similar affair two back so keep safe. 8.00
3 HAN SOLO ** Drawn badly but never looked comfortable last start and could offer value to exotics. 20
4 ZENZERO *** Maiden desperate for a result while in form but should figure. 5.00
5 RIGHT IS RIGHT *** Wont win out of turn but foot on the till and gets his chance. 3.00
6 GOLDEN JADE *** Improved last couple and extra trip suits. 8.00
7 STANZOUT ** Veteran who won at start 92 and have to respect. 20
8 BIGCAT RHAPSODY ** Solid of late and appreciates being back on the Poly. 20
9 BUZET * Battles away but skinny end of exotics at odds. 20
10 SEASONS WONDER ** Will be running on late and another to include in exotics for value. 33
11 CLASSIC THUNDER * Long-term maiden and easier to ignore. 100
12 DOS EQUIS ** Can disappoint but track and trip suits. 33
13 SILVER FLY * Can run on late but easier to leave out. 33
14 NORTH STAR * No. 200

.

Race 5

Selections; 3 PERFECT P – 6 MR SPIELBERG – 1 A LA VICTORY – 4 IDEAL GUIDE
Races like this one take on a new meaning as we head towards the Gold Cup in November and most of these runners will play a big part on a lightweight if they get a start. One such horse is PERFECT P who arrived from Argentina with two wins to his name. Another three wins and place in just five starts since landing suggests Pat Shaw has a handy stayer on his hands and he looks perfectly placed (well named) to have a real crack the handicap conditions of the Gold Cup and can win this. MR SPEILBERG looks a very similar type. The 4YO has raced exclusively in Singapore and his four wins and five places from 11 career starts has him pegged as a stayer with a big future. Most others can win and while A LA VICTORY has 59kg to lump, he goes too well not to think he handles the trip and the weight with IDEAL GUIDE and ORDER OF THE SUN always a show.

1 A LA VICTORY *** Query at the trip and weight to carry but just going to well in good company not to be a big show. 8.00
2 ORDER OF THE SUN *** Bold runner who will be in this a very long way. 5.00
3 PERFECT P *** Did it tough enough last start to think effort was good and pay to keep following. 3.00
4 IDEAL GUIDE *** Very honest and last win was at this benchmark so gets his chance. 8.00
5 FUJIN BRIGHT ** Will race on the pace so gate 1 a bonus and could be each-way value. 15
6 MR SPIELBERG *** Very progressive stayer who looks well placed here to knock in another win. 3.00
7 FORTUNE WINNER ** Showed last start he is up to this company and will be doing best work late. 12
8 KNIGHT SPIRIT * Looks outclassed but will hold his own to the wire late. 33

.

Race 6

Selections; 1 CLERMONT CLUB – 3 RON – 7 JIM – 8 FOREVER BEST
Recent Class droppers look to have a big say here and after placing at his most recent start, CLERMONT CLUB looks the pick of the bunch. The 6YO gets to jump from gate 1 and you would expect Manny Nunes gives him every chance handy throughout. Like CLERMONT CLUB, RON also ran well last start when dropping to Class 5 and can win this. The 6YO did it tough enough last start to think the effort was better than the result and while he will need luck from gate 10, he should figure in this finish. The interesting runner – hopefully at odds – is JIM. Newly licensed hoop A Da Silva takes over from the inexperienced A Syahir and that should see improvement in what is a very suitable race. Of the rest that play a part at the business end, FORVER BEST and TONGARIRO both are in form and have to be considered.

1 CLERMONT CLUB *** Showed last start he wins very soon in Class 5. 2.20
2 JACK OF HEARTS * No. 100
3 RON *** Drawn awkwardly but will win again in Class 5 very soon and pay to keep safe. 5.00
4 STREET CHAMP ** Will work into this late so keep safe at odds. 20
5 BLACK BEAN * Struggling. 50
6 DRAGON ROYAL * OK two back but nothing else. 50
7 JIM *** Form reads terribly but gets senior hoop and this type of race is his caper. 20
8 FOREVER BEST *** Only one win to his name but has looked due of late and gets the favours from gate 3. 5.00
9 TONGARIRO *** Just missed last start over the mile and has to be a show. 6.00
10 BLACK FRIDAY * Has been struggling to finish off his races of late. 20
11 SIMPANG * Versatile and could include in skinny end of exotics for value. 33
12 JOHNNY HATES JAZZ * Goes good on his day but hard to catch. 20

.

Race 7

Selections; 3 KNIGHT WAGER – 6 TAFFETAS – 2 FLAK JACKET – 5 STRUBELI
As you would expect, a very good field will head to the start for this BM83 and with a strong early pace expected, it may be the swoopers who it will pay to follow. The pace will come from FLAK JACKET and OCEAN GENERAL – both with claimers – and it may be a case of whoever gets the softer run throughout plays a part in the finish. FLAK JACKET from gate 2 probably looks the better option and he may well try to make every post a winner. But KNIGHT WAGER will be the beneficiary of the hot pace and can win again. The 5YO placed over this trip at 4YO Group company and his two runs since his unplaced Derby effort shows he has plenty to offer this campaign. The only mare in the field, TAFFETAS, will also benefit from a solid early clip and she will make her presence felt late with STRUBELI also in the mix on his recent form.

1 BOURBON GOLDMAN ** Resuming and good first up form suggests he goes well. 15
2 FLAK JACKET *** Will lead from gate 2 and could be hard to run down with handy Kif Toh claim. 4.00
3 KNIGHT WAGER *** Last start win this trip was very good and will be flying late again. 3.00
4 TITANIUM ** Gets blinkers as he drops back in trip but pay to keep safe. 10
5 STRUBELI *** Hit top form and pay to follow with lightweight. 10
6 TAFFETAS *** Has shown more than enough this campaign to she can win this. 5.00
7 BAHEN ** Worked home OK over 1200m last start suggesting the extra 200m may suit. Value. 33
8 OCEAN GENERAL ** Showed last start he handles the turf and will give them something to catch with no weight. 12
9 ASPEN ** Steady and can include in skinny end of exotics with tongue-tie removed. 20
10 HIGH COUNCIL ** Saddle slipped when winning in Class 4 last start and should be competitive in this company. 12

.

Race 8

Selections; 2 MAPLE STAR – 5 SAFFIR – 1 BLACK MAGIC – 7 HELEN
When push comes to shove, experienced riders are worth their weight in gold. And given that idiom, it’s handy to be a heavyweight hoop. Michael Rodd is the man and we are hoping the affable Aussie jockey can get MAPLE STAR over the line in what is a suitable race. The 9YO resumed with a good run for app P Dellorto and given his form from his previous campaign, he might be due to break a long drought. It’s hard to fault the form of SAFFIR’S though. The 4YO has hit a rich vein of form since dropping back in distance and showed last start that Class 4 holds no fear with gate 2 in his favour. In a race with no standout, WINNING MAN also looks a big show after winning well enough on debut but he does have a wide gate to contend with. Others that win without surprising are BLACK MAGIC back on the Poly with blinkers added with HELEN also looking due.

1 BLACK MAGIC *** Nothing last start but looks a better option on the Poly and can win with blinkers on first time. 6.00
2 MAPLE STAR *** Excuses when resuming and very hard to beat with senior hoop from gate 1. 4.00
3 MINGS MAN * Form reads very badly but last win was in similar affair so hopefully improves. 50
4 FEDERER ** Drawn wide but will go forward and should be thereabouts. 8.00
5 SAFFIR *** In winning form and will try to make every post a winner from gate 2. 5.00
6 WINNING MAN *** Another speedy type drawn wide but debut win good enough to follow. 8.00
7 HELEN *** Looks ready to win again and should get some favours from the nice draw. 6.00
8 SUPERSONICSURPRISE ** Needed Class 5 to win and wide gate makes stepping up to this company tough. 20
9 CAPTAIN MCCAW ** Solid and always going to play some part in the finish. 12
10 GUILTLESS ** Resuming and only win was on the Poly. 20
11 KING SAVINSKY * Needs longer. 50
12 XIN TREASURE * Excuses last start but like to see in easier company. 33
13 LADY ROULETTE ** Always shows enough to keep safe in this type of race. 12
14 RACER KING *** Showed last start why you have to follow each-way in this type of race. 12

.

Race 9

Selections; 2 ROCKFAST – 12 MAREA NEGRO – 11 TENMA – 1 RUN IT TWICE
Again, we are hoping that a solid early clip will give the back markers every chance on a course that suits in the lucky last. As such, ROCKFAST gets his chance to show that he can live up to some impressive New Zealand form. Although just fair (considering) at his local debut, the 4YO had excuses last start before storming home late and that gives very indication he can win this. Following him home from the rear should be two lightweight hopes in TENMA and MAREA NEGRO. Not much separates the two although MAREA NEGRO had excuses not to win last start in similar company and should get some support. TENMA might be the value and looks a likely customer when the race is run to suit. The field has depth though and Nunes on RUN IT TWICE appeals as does JELLY BEAN, JUST NAME IT and SATELLITE PRINCE in what should be a very busy finish.

1 RUN IT TWICE *** Not far away last start and step up to 1400m looks ideal. 3.00
2 ROCKFAST *** Best work late to place last start with excuses and can break though here. 5.00
3 SKY ELEVEN ** Honest and can get out to good value so keep safe. 20
4 BLADEMEISTER ** Former Australian and would like to see some support on local trial form. 20
5 GOLD LINE ** Constant but rarely wins so exotics looks best option. 20
6 JELLY BEAN *** First start on the Poly but just going to well not to think 1400m suits. 6.00
7 JUST NAME IT *** Close-up at last two this trip and must go close with tongue-tie added. 7.00
8 SATELLITE PRINCE *** In form on the Poly but did win maiden on the turf so pay to respect. 13
9 GOLD CROWN ** Did it tough enough last start when stepping up to this level to give another chance with downgrade to winkers. 20
10 HARDCORE ROCK ** Better suited back at the handicap conditions and could surprise with tongue-tie added. 20
11 TENMA *** Course will suit and will be flying late so keep very safe. 20
12 MAREA NEGRO *** Excuses not to win at odds last start and must go close in this. 12
13 GENERAL CONATUS * Should need easier. 50

The Inspiring Story Of Dr Marianne Thomson

‘I am writing this as an older, small breeder and in our language, Markus, because this is our war. If I phoned you, I’d be overwhelmed by business jargon within a minute. What makes you so angry that you don’t care what you are doing to our shaky industry? How do you deal with this in your inner, quiet self?’
