An extremely interesting meeting with seemingly good things or value from race 1 to race 9 so something for every type of punter.

It’s a mixed surface meeting as well and it will pay to watch for those with Poly form and also those who finish off races well on the turf given the C Course gives the swoopers a big show.

Where to start?

SUPER BONUS in race 1 could tick both the “value” and “good thing” boxes.

The 5YO knows how to win which is definitely in his favour given the opposition and has enough speed to think John Powell could dictate terms from gate 2 and get followers off to a good start.

However, DAMON in race 4 won’t be value.

frontad-singapore-airlines-cup_140x120But given the field and his good form, the race does look his to lose and it will be interesting to see if any other horses get support to beat him.

Other value option include ONE RAR resuming in race 7, BOARD WALK down in grade in race 8 and if you want a 100-1 shot with some hope, SMART IDEA might be a fun way to finish the night.

Friday 12 February

Best Bets: (DAMON race 4, win), (ONE RAR race 7, value) and (BOARD WALK race 8, value).

Race 1

Selections; 8 SUPER BONUS – 2 MOTHER NATURE – 1 CONFACET – 4 DR OCTOPUS
This race looked just fair at first glance but with a few maidens having their first crack in Class 5 Company, it surprisingly has depth and should be a keen betting affair. From the top, CONFACET, MOTHER NATURE and even BONJOUR BOB with headgear added will improve in this company. Of the trio, MOTHER NATURE has plenty of toe and B Vorster should ensure she gets every chance. Likewise CONFACET with Oscar Chavez up has speed and plays a part and BONJOUR BOB might be the value runner. However, SUPER BONUS knows how to win and that looks a bonus in this field. The 5YO showed last start he is ready to win again and hopefully J Powell can make use of the good gate. NATURAL IMPULSE also wins without surprising with D Beasley up and DR OCTOPUS will be motoring late and while he should win more often than he does, he looks the benchmark.

1 CONFACET *** No runs on the board but has pace and this trip in Class 5 looks ideal. 5.00
2 MOTHER NATURE *** Another that has pace and appreciates Class 5. Big show. 5.00
3 BONJOUR BOB ** Form reads badly but gets blinkers/pacifiers and could improve lengths first time in Class 5. 12
4 DR OCTOPUS *** Frustrating horse but will be doing best work late and can win. 4.00
5 JOHN DUKE * Freshened but no. 33
6 NATURAL IMPULSE *** Last start better than the result and should figure in this finish. 8.000
7 PROBO CHANDROSO ** Veteran who is always some hope in this type of race. 8.00
8 SUPER BONUS *** Form better than it reads and could show them a clean pair of heels. 3.50

Race 2

Selections; 9 STAR GENIUS – 2 ARION – 10 BLACK THUNDER – 1 CAMERA STELLATA
While there looks only three winning hopes on paper, the race is an interesting given one of the chances was beaten as the odds on pop at his last start, one just missed at 100-1 and the other is on debut. The debutante with a winning hope looks ARION for the Brown/Brown combination. The 3YO has looked good at the trials and in a race without depth, expect support and a strong debut. STAR GENIUS is the one that owes punters but can make amends. The filly has ability and it just looks a matter of time before she gets her act together and wins. BLACK THUNDER is a Japanese-bred 3YO filly so gets to carry 52kg and showed last start at long odds that she has plenty to offer.

1 CAMERA STELLATA ** Resuming and recent trial suggests he will improve on what was an ordinary first campaign. 20
2 ARION *** Trailing good enough to win on debut with support expected. 3.00
3 ASTROCANDY * Improves on debut effort but prefer others. 33
4 CLAIR DE LUNE ** Resumes after inauspicious debut but gets tongue-tie and improves on good recent trial. 12
5 HACKER * Showed nothing on debut. 100
6 RED GENERAL * Would like to see support on exposed trial form. 50
7 GOLDEN SAND ** Solid without being spectacular at the trials and market best guide. 12
8 NOVA ANGEL * Prefer to just watch on exposed trial form. 50
9 STAR GENIUS *** Beaten as the odds on elect last start but can win this with experience a factor. 2.00
10 BLACK THUNDER *** Stormed home at 100-1 to place last start and have to respect on that effort. 6.00

Race 3

Selections; 5 BEST JADE – 4 BE BOLD – 1 LUMINIFF LAD – 8 PICASSO
While LUMINIFF LAD and PICASSO must be respected, this race could be a two-horse battle between BE BOLD and BEST JADE. Not much separates the two but we like the fact the blinkers go on BEST JADE after winning last start, which suggests he can improve again with a recent nice trial with headgear a pointer. However, BE BOLD just missed at his Singapore debut and given there was a gap to the third horse, he could be hard to beat in this. As mentioned, LUMINIFF LAD has to be respected and his nice recent trial suggests he will go very well and PICASSO resuming has to be some hope on the honest form he showed at his first campaign.

1 LUMINIFF LAD *** Freshened with a nice trial and won maiden this trip so has to be a show. 8.00
2 SUN MIRACLE ** Disappointing in this company after good debut win and have to take on trust. 20
3 DEVIL’S PASS ** Freshness after a rare shocker and has to be respected on previous form with winkers added for this. 8.00
4 BE BOLD *** Supported and just missed at Singapore debut. Big show. 3.00
5 BEST JADE *** Backed up good debut with nice win and can improve again with blinkers added. 3.00
6 LUCKY BOY * Saddle slipped last start but query on the Poly. 20
7 BASTION * Easier to ignore. 100
8 PICASSO *** Resuming with smart trial under his belt and wins a race like this soon on what he showed first campaign. 6.00
9 SATCHMO * Maiden who gets tongue-tie but prefer to see in easier company. 50
10 GOOD BET ** Maiden but excuses last start (saddle slipped) and looks handy enough. 12

Race 4

Selections; 2 DAMON – 4 ARCHER COMPANY – 5 ARLO – 1 EXCELLENT WINNER
This race is very weak and DAMON jumps off the page as the obvious winner. The 4YO is the only horse in the field with any serious form and his four placings from six career starts has him the short priced favourite and justifiable so. The only horse that could beat him on exposed form is ARCHER COMPANY. The Darci Brahma 3YO is yet to place in four starts but his eye-catching effort late at his most recent run has him under notice. He had excuses on that occasion as well and the latest Brazilian, E Chaves, could very well get the job done for the departing Michael Freedman. Of the rest, ARLO is a big hope on form but Nunes to a 3kg claimer is always a concern and keep the newcomer EXCELLENT WINNER safe with the market best guide.

1 EXCELLENT WINNER ** Quiet trials so market best guide in this weak maiden. 9.00
2 DAMON *** Due and could be hard to beat in this average field. 2.00
3 JOY AND HAPPY ** Form reads badly but appreciate maiden company and has showed enough previous this trip to follow. 12
4 ARCHER COMPANY *** Excuses not to finish closer last start and best work late suggest 1400m suits. 4.00
5 ARLO *** In form but drawn wide and will need luck for junior rider. 4.00
6 MING’S BOY * Struggles. 100
7 DASHING * Improved effort last start but still need stop find a few lengths. 20
8 LEE MAN * Recent form ordinary. 100
9 BM POWER * Resuming after poor run of form. 100
10 TOOBIGTOFAIL ** Last two far at best but has shown glimpses in similar races to this. 50

Race 5

Selections; 1 HAN SOLO – 3 TIGER BAY – 4 HEE’S EGO – 7 MASURAO
Some solid form in this Class 5 Polytrack mile with a few horses ready to win again and two last start maiden winners amongst the top chances. Of the two that broke through for maiden wins at their last starts, HAN SOLO was due prior and won very well so looks hard to beat a with gate 1 a bonus. TIGER BAY has yet to break his maiden status but is due. The 4YO has hit a strong patch of form and looks extremely well placed here from gate 3. HEE’S EGO looks the other that wins without surprising back on the Poly and he has always given the impression the mile will suit. Blanket over the rest in a race with depth.

1 HAN SOLO *** Turned some good form into a maiden win and hard to beat again from the ace. 2.50
2 NOVA POWER * Blinkers to winkers but hard to have. 100
3 TIGER BAY *** Maiden but is due an this race suits with gate 3 a bonus. 3.00
4 HEE’S EGO *** Showed last start why the Poly is his caper and mile should suit. 9.00
5 DRAGON GOLD * Right company but looks a better option over shorter. 20
6 GOLD CUSTOMER * Gets tongue-tie but needs to show more. 33
7 MASURAO ** Form reads badly but will give plenty of cheek out front with blinkers on at value. 20
8 ANAK PENANG ** Tested this trip but battled on well last start over 1200m so keep safe. 20
9 BIGCAT RHAPSODY ** Drawn badly and lookout of form but last win was in similar affair so look for improvement. 20
10 HEAR ME ** Eleven years young and pops up when feeling sprightly. 20
11 HAPPY JOY ** Broke maiden status this trip last start and pay to follow. 12
12 GOLDEN JADE ** Wide draw a concern but found some form and can include in exotics. 12
13 GENERAL CONATUS ** Draw a concern but always pay to include in exotics in this type of race. 33
14 OCTIVIA ** Nothing last start but goes OK on her day. 33

Race 6

Selections; 1 STOCK BROKER – 2 INFERMO – 10 ZAC GALLANT – 9 SACRED CROWN
While a few of these horses are in form and the race has depth, none win out of turn that makes finding the winner extremely tough. As such the easiest choice is the top-rated horse in STOCK BROKER. His recent form warrants respect and C Brown will give him every chance. INFERMO is also in form and while he doesn’t win out of turn, he has to be a big hope with D Beasley on-board. The honest ZAC GALLANT and SACRED CROWN pick themselves and HANDSOME BAB could be the bolter fresh given a nice recent trial.

1 STOCK BROKER *** Won’t win out of turn but just missed last start and always a show. 4.00
2 INFERMO *** Another who can mix his form but ready to win again and 1000m is his caper. 5.00
3 SUPER EIGHT ** Appreciates first up run but only win was on the turf. 20
4 FLYING WINNER ** Very disappointing last start with heavy support so play with care. 12
5 BLACK BEAN ** Was better over longer but surprised winning over 1200m last start so have to respect. 12
6 HANDSOME BAB *** Resuming back in trip but a recent trial looked good enough to keep safe first-up. 10
7 RIO DE JANEIRO ** Disappointing last two but has speed and could give a sight from gate 2. 10
8 OASIS SPUR * Struggling of late. 33
9 SACRED CROWN *** Always a show in races like this and should figure prominently throughout. 8.00
10 ZAC GALLANT *** Super consistent given his lowly rating and right in this. 6.00
11 SPECTA DILEMMA ** Has speed and can give a sight. 10

Race 7

Selections; 4 DARCI CHARMER – 8 DRAGON FURY – 2 ONE RAR – 5 HUGHSY
This race would be a good one on any given day but the fact we have a few horses with strong winning hopes resuming after indifferent last start efforts in either the Gold Cup or the EW Barker, it looks a beauty. But DARCI CHARMER has the benefit of a solid first-up run behind Kiwi Karma and the step up to 1400m looks ideal. He is honest and did look due last campaign so gets his chance here. DRAGON FURY gets Dan Beasley and has a Group win under his belt over this trip so also looks a leading hope. Of those resuming, ONE RAR could be the surprise packet. The 7YO has had a fair break but has won first-up this trip previously so a big run is expected. HUGHSY comes off a shocker in the Gold Cup but is better than that and can be followed this campaign while A LA VICTORY – who also comes off a terrible showing in the Gold Cup – can also show up fresh with a nice trial under his belt.

1 GOODMAN ** Not far away over 1200m last start behind Kiwi Karma and 1400m suits. 12
2 ONE RAR *** Resuming and has won first up this trip previously so worth thought with 4kg claim. 12
3 BOURBON GOLDMAN ** Will be working into this late. 12
4 DARCI CHARMER *** Resumed with solid placing over 1200m and hard to hold out in this. 3.00
5 HUGHSY *** Smart type resuming after disappointing run in Gold Cup but happy to follow first-up. 6.00
6 VALBUENA * Struggling of late. 50
7 BRILLIANT DEAL * Appreciates first-up run but might be longer. 50
8 DRAGON FURY *** Always has to be considered this trip and senior hoop looks a good move. 5.00
9 A LA VICTORY *** Resuming sans blinkers after something looked amiss in the Gold Cup but form prior and recent trial suggests he can go well. 8.00
10 TITANIUM ** Resuming and worth thought on best form although wide gate can test. 20
11 FRAAJILISTIC * Ordinary effort last start and have to take on trust. 33
12 ABSOLUTELY ** Resuming after big run at odds in the EW Barker and pay to keep safe in exotics. 20
13 IDEAL GUIDE ** Tested this level but honest as a rule and will add value to exotics. 20

Race 8

Selections; 3 ANONYMOUS – 2 RED ANT – 1 BOARD WALK – 8 WAKINO NEXUS
Two horses stand out on winning form here with RED ANT and ANONYMOUS the one’s punters will be on. ANONYMOUS is chasing a hat trick of Class 4 wins and given the victory two back was his maiden win, he has some upside. He also gets to jump from gate 3, which is in his favour given RED ANT jumps from 9. In saying that, RED ANT gets the experienced M Rodd after his regular hoop J See got time and his recent form is red-hot so looks a leading hope. Punters will be all over them so BOARD WALK down in grade might be a better option for value seekers and his recent trials suggests he could show up at odds. Throw in WAKINO NEXUS who showed last start he is ready to win again and go even wider in exotics.

1 BOARD WALK *** Significant drop in Class and recent trial good enough to follow. 6.00
2 RED ANT *** Putting together a great run of form and wins this without surprising with M Rodd. 4.00
3 ANONYMOUS *** Hard to fault back-to-back wins in this Class and pay to follow. 6.00
4 BRIEFNESS *** Improved to place at second start in Singapore and wins this without surprising. 6.00
5 NOVA STAR ** Resuming after solid effort this company and maiden win was this trip/track. 10
6 SUPER JOY ** Has been tested in Class 4 previously but hard to fault form. 8.00
7 BATTLE KING ** Resumed with excellent effort over 1100m but might need longer again. 12
8 WAKINO NEXUS *** Just missed last start in similar affair and right in this from gate 1. 6.00
9 YIN JIE ** Been in solid form and looks a solid lightweight hope. 8.00
10 HAPPY SAGA ** Jockey questioned last start when running on late in similar affair and pay to keep safe. 20

Race 9

Selections; 2 NOVA STRIKE – 1 MIGHTY WARRIOR – 11 SHANGHAI BUND – 8 VIVIANO
The Singapore Turf Club has strayed from the normal solid Class 4 finish to the evening but it doesn’t help punters, as this Class 3 event looks one of the toughest races on the night. In fact the 1400m event could be one of the most even races seen in recent times with most having serious winning chances and the finish should be a busy one. Where to start? A 3YO in NOVA STRIKE faces his biggest test – and on the turf to boot – but just goes too well not to be a huge show. He did place at his only turf run and his last Poly start win when blinkers went on has him hard to beat. MIGHTY WARRIOR is also a horse to follow with four wins and five places from just 10 career starts. He had excuses last start – his only unplaced run – and can win this. Blanket over the rest including SMART IDEA with no weight who could run a race at likely very long odds.

1 MIGHTY WARRIOR *** Excuses last start and that effort late plus previous form has him right in this. 5.00
2 NOVA STRIKE *** Having a rare turf run but has placed on the surface and last start win too strong not to follow. 3.00
3 NANDOWRA ** A long time between drinks but worked home OK last start and this company suits. 33
4 POSEIDON *** Struck a tougher field today but last start win was strong and pay to keep following. 10
5 LAUGHING GRAVY ** Resuming after all the way win over the mile back in November and could give a sight. 12
6 GILT COMPLEX *** Resuming and looks a progressive type who should improve for the break. 8.00
7 ODE TO JOY ** Two Singapore wins have been over longer but should work into this late. 12
8 VIVIANO *** Promising type who has hit the ground running and looks up to this type of Company. 7.00
9 WONDERFUL PRINCE ** Form better than it reads and will be value so keep safe. 33
10 TOTALITY * Hard to have on recent form. 100
11 SHANGHAI BUND *** In very good form and often each-way odds. 8.00
12 ROCKFAST ** Will work into this late and yet another value option. 33
13 SMART IDEA ** Form reads hopeless and headgear yes off but excuses last start and this race is suitable. 100

The Inspiring Story Of Dr Marianne Thomson

‘I am writing this as an older, small breeder and in our language, Markus, because this is our war. If I phoned you, I’d be overwhelmed by business jargon within a minute. What makes you so angry that you don’t care what you are doing to our shaky industry? How do you deal with this in your inner, quiet self?’
